I received my Pop Culture Shock Akuma bust with great anticipation today. It was bitter sweet...

First the good:

-The sculpt looks amazing. If Akuma was a real person, this is definitely what he would look like. The face is very rugged looking and you can see where the character is mentally through his expression and weathered look. Akuma is definitely no boy scout or pretty boy.

-The size is good as well. At first I thought it was small, but after giving it some thought I am very pleased with it as it will be very nice to be able to display a lot of these on one shelf without having to stress about space. It's also big enough to show great detail.

-The base is fitting to the bust and does not distract from it. I'm glad that Jerry decided to keep a similar look to the PF bases.

-The paint application on the hair, face, and eyes was very well done and I only found a couple of very small flaws that you would have to look very hard for within the hair.

Now for the bad:

-First is a major oversight by the factory with the edition size being wrong on the bottom of the bust. It says there are 400 of this version where there is only 300. While it doesn't take away from the appearance, it could possibly cause controversy years down the road if anyone ever tries to sell it. Usually have a CoA is a good thing, but in this case having the edition size different from the bottom of the base is unfortunate. It is questionable how a supervisor from the factory didn't catch this and fix it before shipping.

-Unlike the paint application on the hair, face, and eyes, the paint application on the dougi (including the symbol) is of extremely poor quality. Hopefully they are not all like this, but I have a lot of paint runs on the blue and the "ten" symbol looks like it was given one quick coat and forgot about. I'm going to have to shell out my own money to have this fixed and I'm not happy about it.

Overall this is a good collectible and I hope that Jerry does a lot more of these in the future. I just feel the paint application needs to be addressed. Looking forward to Blanka!

Id say your review is fair and accurate.

Just about all of them ive seen have some sloppy paint on the costume, especially the symbol on the back.

The factory was told the symbol on the back is supposed to look rough and 'painted on' as if he put it there himself (and its unlikely Akuma would know embroidery) however the samples I approved were better than the production versions.

In their defense it is a hard thing to accomplish in production (I never liked the silk screen on the 1/4 scale)

But the sloppy paint on the costumes annoys me and Im not using them any longer. The factory that did Zangief is doing them from this point on.

As for the ES...thats my bad. Not the factory or Sideshow. It was a brain fart

I like the Street Figher statues, but the bust does not impress me at all.

Andrew
02-02-2010, 12:22 AM
That's a relief that this bust didn't come from the same factory as Zangief. I'm glad to hear that (I'm assuming) the rest of your work will go to the factory that you have been singing praises about. I hope you make a lot more of these SF busts.

Will the other characters have the real life influence that Akuma has?

Jerry I love the SF line so far, but I gotta say, its overpriced, is there anything you can do? I was hoping that these busts would be close to 1/2 scale but its definatley 1/3 scale if not smaller, so why are they going for $175 and $189 when a way bigger 1/2 scale marvel lsb sells for $199?

smaller production run, smaller license than marvel.

Even the full size statues are going to be more.

I never knew how SS can release such large statues for the price, especially when you look at bowen for example, you get like twice the statue and detail for the same amount or a bit more.

I have always been curious how much statues typically cost on average.

Just checked out the proto pics and I can't help but feel VERY disappointed...

I sold off BOTH of my Akuma PF to raise emergency fund in hope that the bust can make up my loss but looks like I'll be taking out my airbrush for a complete make over...

Jerry I know it's not your fault but if I have the chance I will totally rip the factory owner's balls off...:radior:

I don't have the Shin. I just added both to the title so everyone would post pictures in one place. No need to have two threads for one bust.

I ended up cancelling mine for space reasons (so I hope someone here converts!) but I'm glad there's a decent review up so quickly, I can enjoy them vicariously. Shame about the costume paint though.

I dunno, it does look rough like jerry said. But his Gi looks poorly painted though. I hope Shin dosen't have the same problem? Size, a bit smaller than what I was expecting, but not that small from what it seems in the pics.

Even the Venom Comiqutte has a bit of a poor paint job, but it dosen't take away from the sculpt really. Over all the piece looks good.

Overall it definitely is a good looking piece. It would have been "great" if not for the paint application.

I would have picked it up even knowing about how it turned out. Definitely not a deal breaker.

Also, the real wooden beads was a nice touch as well. It adds to the overall quality of the sculpt.

I just got mine today, you are right about that, it is very small for the price, it should be around $149, but it is a nice bust, heavy, well paint job, I wish it cost alittle bit less, with tax and shipping, it cost me over $217.:jedidual:

yeah I just got my exclusive too. While I do think the sculpt is great, and the paint is even great on the Shin, it is just outrageously priced for the size, like not overpriced....outrageously overpriced. This bust is only a little bigger then someone cutting the 1/4 in half and selling that, it should be $130 TOPS. I do really like it, but I feel dirty having paid so much haha if it was 2X as big for the price (approx 1/2 scale) or way cheaper for the current size i'd be 100% happy, but that is my only gripe with this piece, it is a big gripe though!

Ok, Shin Akuma Bust.

It is very highly detailed and an overall a fantastic look and feel to it!

Yes you guys are correct! Seems that it should be less than the $189.99 price point. I hope the price is adjusted next time on the next few busts.

That bust is amazing. And, to me, it is not overpriced. It is limited to 175 only! .I think the guy who pay 2000 $ for a shin akuma pf can think that's a little bit overpriced lol. But Jerry said it had to be that price for such a limited run of the bust. So, personaly, I don' t think it is overpriced, that's just the right price for such a beautiful bust with such a limited run. I have any problem with the price. Yes, I must confess, I would prefer it has been pr'iced to 150 but if it has to be 189, no way, I'm okay with the price. I got the regular and it fit so great with the akuma PF, I just wait to get she shin !
For those who got a shin akuma pf, if, back from 2 years, you have to pay 300 for the shin akuma pf and not 250 as it was, would you think now that was overpriced ?

Just got my regular bust today. Looks great! Unlike Speedy, though, the paintwork on mine is fine (on the symbol at least). Have to say, though, I was VERY surprised at how small the box was and the small size of the bust, but it is a good piece. Very realistic looking face, top job!

My Shin converted from a wait list a short while before these started shipping. However, I still haven't had notice of it being posted whereas the regular has already arrived. This happen to anyone else?

Low Editions like these rarely convert unless you got on the Waitlist a few minutes after sell out.
The Edition Size is Only 175 on this.........So, I would say, it's Probably Not Converting.
When Editions are into a Few Hundreds, then mostly they will Convert.

Thing too is that Shin-Akuma is a whole another character in the SF universe. It's not some random costume color variant, or some nameplate of the exact same character sculpt.

Anyway here goes, I got my Akuma busts delivered today (both reg and shin) and I didn't pay anything to the FedEX guy. I was under the impression that under the new European shipping that Sideshow started to use, that I would be charged VAT and import fees at the point of delivery, but I just signed for the package and the guy said bye and drove off - was I supposed to be charged?

His hair is chipped in about 6 places, big chips too that the factory just painted over, and the paint was slopped on his hair to the point where it looked like a 4 year old painted it. Also his gi was scuffed. I'm not sure if the reg and ex were made at the same factory but the quality on the shin is 100X better then the reg. I sent pics to sideshow and they agree, they are sending me a replacement reg akuma...and I hope its a million times better then what I got :(

Sorry to hear that mate. I hope your replacement is in good shape. The inner-foam packaging on both my reg and ex were completely smashed to pieces, but the outer box and most importantly, Akuma himself were fine.

My reg is 89/300 and my ex is 13/175

yeah the styro is some of the cheapest i've seen in my collecting career, it crumbled in my hands. Either way im sure the replacement will be good (hopefully) im just glad sideshow is sending me a new one! Congrats on the shin and reg pickups, nice low number on the Shin!! ;) (i got 174/175!!)

Mine kind of crumbled too, I was "crap, gonna probably need a replacement for Shin Akuma. But he survived...somehow, heh. Another thing that bothered me was that the two ends of the sytrofoam box wasn't taped together.

I actually cancelled my pre-ordered Shin Akuma LSB more than a month and a half ago. Then after waiting for reviews and comments. I decided to get into the wait list March 1, 2010 just 3 days ago , guess what I got notice it converted..

I'm stoked why it converted so easily even if some many wanted it.. I just hope SSC is not sending me refurbished bust from the returns...

It would be for a while before I can get my hands on a Shin Akuma PF . cant find a seller locally.. and prices are way to un-reasonable.. I'll let the sizzles simmer for a while then i'll snag one eventually.. gotta have faith! lol

The last time I check..a bust is portion of a full statue duh!

Well for the sake of debating (not arguing) I don't believe the intention of a bust was ever to be part of a full statue. That is why it is referred to as a "bust".

Otherwise people would return them as broken or pieces missing.

:D

anyhow, I still wish Jerry spend more time on full statue or diorama instead of a bust.

I think you might be off a bit. Ah 1:1 statue of akuma would probally have a SRP of $5,000-$6,000. After some time has passed, it would probally be more like $10,000-$12,000 on the secondary market.

I must admit now that those akumas busts seems to be really too expensive for people who wont to pay the price the busts command.
The busts (ex and regular ) are still in stock at sideshow, and I notice on ebay france some ex available for preorders at an official retailer but no one bought them (and I know that when Sideshow is unable to sell its exclusives on their own site, they try to sell them with other retailers in other country, so that is a sign).

Now that regular bust of akuma just ended on ebay france, and I bid in the last 20 s, so it ended at 51 euros ,if I had not bid, it would have ended at 41,50 euros !!!

51 euros is still a good deal for the winner, when the price in stores is 180 euros !!! (but I saw some still sell at that price)

But maybe the busts could be available for a while at sideshow site...

I finally got my Akuma bust back from Vince-Vell who did a repaint for me. I've always liked Akuma in his white gi, which is color # 6 in SSF IV. It has a dirty grimy look to it and that is what Vince was able to do for me.

He also chromed the eyes and painted a transparent red over top to give them a glowing effect.

I will paint the symbol on his back myself next week and post some more pictures then. What do you guys think?
