i decided to get one. it's a great pocket DSLR! very slim and light. also takes 720p vids and i hear there's a 1080p hack for it too.

Not bad!

Not bad at all!

How much?

That looks really good Ed. Can I ask, how much of that is 'straight' off the camera, and how much of it is 'sharpening, clarifying, masking' etc, through photoshop, etc?

I might sell my G10 and get one if it really looks that good straight out of the camera.

Also, what drawbacks have you noticed, if any with it?

I've been thinking of picking up this exact camera. Are the photos taken with the 'stock' lens?

All good questions, looks very raw to me.

hey guys, i bought it new from amazon.com for $778.24 shipped. i've only taken those two pics of spidey so far. i configured the camera to shoot raw, aperture priority mode at f/1.7, center focus. i used adobe lightroom 2.0 with no sharpening to jpg.

i still need to play with it more but it's pretty good right out of the box! btw, this is the 20mm "pancake" lens. it's a 40mm equivalent in 35mm terms.

hey steve, the only drawback on it so far is that it's so small! lol. seriously, i feel like i'm going to drop it! i decided to attach the shoulder strap to the camera. i don't want to accidentally drop it.

you can take this anywhere comfortably and get great results.

btw, since is a fairly new platform.. the number of lenses is quite limited but i'm extremely happy so far with the 20mm. the depth of field wide open looks to be very good. i'll let you know as i continue to shoot with it. i intend to use the video mode also. :)

alex, i think you'll love not lugging around a HUGE DSLR.

my primary is still my Canon but it's nice to have options. :)

Keep us updated in this thread. For me, I would probably only use the pancake, unless I was headed outdoors. I will probably never buy a full size DSLR, so I was really excited to see this (and the Olympus micro).

Shoot some video when you get the chance :)

i took a minute's worth of video but it ended up being over 150MB! it was in HD mode so that makes sense. the one thing i learned was the auto-focus kept going in and out which was terribly annoying. looks like the best thing to do was to turn it off which helped but if your subject is constantly moving then it's more of a challenge. i'm not expecting too much in this area since i bought it mainly for its picture taking qualities.

oh, another thing for you DLSR folks (like me). the viewfinder is much like you'd expect on a point/shoot camera. i plan on getting something like this. i believe it's a cheaper alternative than Panasonic's more expensive LVF (live viewfinder).

One quesion, is the video HD and if so is it compressed? I have a new Sony camera and it takes HD but has its own format. Plays great on the Playstation 3.

it shoots either in AVCHD Lite or Motion JPEG compression

thanks for the heads up on playing video on the PS3! i totally forgot to try that. i have a Mitsubishi tv that has card slots for SDHC, Compact Flash, firewire, etc. i couldn't figure how to add a device to access the SDHC card that the GF-1 uses.

i'll try that tonight! :thumbs2:

Please tell me I don't need yet another camera!

P1X4R
07-25-2010, 03:45 AM
you don't. :D

DSLR's are still better quality but these are just so fun to play with! they make for nice everyday carry cameras. you wouldn't want to use these for professional shoots. you'll look like a pansy! ;)

now i need to test it outdoors..

Then, my new Sony is best!

You like the new photos I took at SDCC?

It's all with the new camera. It was so nice to carry. I give up on the SLR at the show

There is so much to see

I'm newer with respect to getting into photography, and never had purchased a DSLR. I was a bit worried about the bulk of the cameras, and knew that I wouldn't use something if it weren't portable. These new micro four thirds attracted me for that reason. In fact, I just purchased the Olympus E-PL1. It should arrive in the mail later today. The kit lens isn't supposed to be spectacular, but it may suffice for a while. I did order the pancake lens, and may consider the Olympus 14-150mm later, if the kit lens isn't satisfying (which many suggest it won't be.)

congrats on the Olympus Pen! i really think this 4/3 micro cameras are going to start taking off in the next few years. once they introduce more lenses and lower the prices then the public will embrace it even more.

you're absolutely right in the convenience dept. definitely the bulk of full size DSLRs makes it much harder to carry around. i find these micro cameras are a great compromise between picture quality and ease of use. i've always hated having to worry about my expensive gear whenever i go to "fun" outings.
