It's not half as cool as Zurb's WIP Rick...

Heard some funny noises coming from deep within yesterday evening and thought "this is it!!!" I ran for the pencils and this is what I came up with:

http://sunsite.iisc.ernet.in/virlib/java/devguide/f25-2.gif

I guess it was only indigestion. I'll give it a few more days.

but thanks anyway:)

I used 3/4lb for the electra. so far...

That's Bats and Zurb... you guys are really gonna like this one... I have a feelin'

Considering you are the only one that may want one Yoda... you got it!

Give that man a signed, numbered AP, #1... I will gladly send you one when I learn how to make a cast...

Here's a question to all willing to participate...

To shirt or not to shirt???

I was thinking about giving him a bit of a tattered shirt. Should I??? You don't see many hulk pieces with shirt remnants.

bat_collector

I think that a torn shirt would look good on the statue. It isn't done too often, and has a nice dramatic flair to it.

Also, if zurb gets one, I want one, too.

Boony I have been drawing for a bazillion years... (okay, I'm only 29, but I have been drawing almost all of those years)

I have a BFA in fine arts and it centered around illustration mostly... I have only been sculpting this piece for a week... as of last night, and sculpting in general for like what Zurb... a Month?

here's my rough sketch for this piece...

Ahhh the kneeling leg... It got a nice old crack in it last night on my last bake. GET OUT THE SUPERGLUE!!! Thing is right now it's the support so of course it is getting the most wear and tear. It is next on the to do list, then the hands, the back, the shorts, the veins, the shirt, blah blah...

Really nice for such an early piece man! Not many people try such a dynamic pose so soon. Very brave of you lol. I had the cracking problem too until i got a tip from a few other guys then it seemed so obvious. They told me to sculpt as much of it as i could before i baked it. Why didnt i think of that DOH! And anything you add after that you zap with a heat gun. Worked out pretty good after that. But anyhow, your off to a great start so just keep crankin em out!!

THanks Justin, Perna, J-Rock...

Justin... It is definitely cool that people have showed their support to me. The feedback has been very much appreciated and it keeps me plugging away, as well as maybe post too many pics. It's been a blast.

Perna... Kdwag is actually sanscrit for kdawg... OK not really. I'm not sure it wasn't a typo or a variation... I'm lookin' to see something from you now my friend...

J-Rock Shiflett daddy... Thanks man. Coming from you I take that as a compliment and a half. What a blast it's been and I do have the same pics up on your forum. Gotta get as much feedback as possible. It's only gonna make me better and hungrier.

Tomorrow I will have some new pics to post. I've worked on the back. I have solved the riddle of the kneeling leg and been sanding the "H" out of it to get some smoothness in there. I'm going on two weeks of on and off work and I'm fairly pleased that it hasn't been thrown into the river yet:)

Pics to come Mondasy morning stay tuned.

He's so damn huge!

Crom

I am going to add torn up shorts as well as a torn up shirt. I have to smooth it out more, add the left fist, add ears, veins, as well as any other minor detail. Then we'll have a finished sculpt.

I have thought about the base... pretty straightforward I think. Lots of broken bricks... maybe some various types of rubble... who knows when I will get to that part...

I put this guys up to some of my other Full size pieces last night. He is in scale. He dwarfs spidey and wolverine...

I will try to get pics of the comparison and post 'em tonight or tomorrow...

Kdawg59
09-28-2004, 09:05 AM
okay these are the last pics I'll be posting until this guy has some clothes on fer cryin' out loud...

these are just to show the scale with Randy's full size wolverine and daredevil. He fits right in.

I realize I have bombarded you guys with pics, so thanks for looking regularly any way. Most sculptors space out their progress shots, but I was excited to share enough I couldn't.

Perhaps I won't do that on the next one unless you guys like seeing every stage...

I don't know for sure yet. I will make as many as I can get away with as well as people want them.

What I will do is actually find out how many can be produced, how costly it will be, how many people want one here. I will take a poll for that part and then if it's doable I will take requests. First come first serve I guess, by email...

RickDTM
10-26-2004, 06:48 AM
Fellas,
I'll share what I know about how KDawg's Hulk will become a kit. Once he's finished, he will have to cut it into castable pieces. Once that's done, whoever will cast the piece will embed those pieces halfway into a product called Klean Klay. Once that is done and the line of clay is sharp, silicone rubber is poured over the top of the pieces to create one half of the mold. The process is repeated for the other side of the piece, and VIOLA! You have a mold. Actually it's a much more complicated thing than I've described, but that's the gist.
When the rubber cures (usually overnight), a two part urethane resin is typically used to pour into the mold. When the resin cures, you separate the two halves of the mold and pop out your resin casting. You do this w/ every piece of the sculpture. When it's all said and done, you have a resin model kit and a perfect replication of the sculpture. The bad thing about the process is the original sculpt usually gets destroyed in the process.

Hope that explained it a bit.....

Rick

Hey Rick I meant to ask... putting the kit back together (the molded pieces) what do you use? super glue? what about the seems? I guess I should buy a kit and find out huh?

I am by no means an expert but I picked up a little bit back when I got into garage kits and bought a mess of kits. The adhesive of choice is Zap-A-Gap or any one of the cyanoacrylates. The pieces are glued together with this stuff. You can then hit it with an Accelerator for an instant bond. Lots of time and depending on the piece, holes are drilled into the two adjoining pieces and a metal pin is inserted for additional strength and stability. This is a good idea and may even be necessary with heavier pieces. Seams are usually sanded down. Gaps and bubbles are filled in and sanded down.

And as a totally unrelated but interesting side note I'm pretty sure that cyanoacrylate glues were developed back in the days of the Vietnam War. It was used medically on the battlefield to seal open wounds shut.
