My ongoing conversation with Sam Wilson has got me curious.

How many of you on the Forum have previous service or currently serve in the Regular or Reserve Forces, National Guard, Territorial Army, or various branches of Law-Enforcement. I've always seen a strong correlation between those who serve and those who are into the fictional heroes.

Why? Beats the heck out of me. Must be a values thing.

Ex-military, current law enforcement, always lived in the superhero fantasy world.

Hey Watcher, do you guys use "Watchdog" as a radio designation nickname too (or is that just us)?

Hi Tetragrammaton-

I don't recall using the call sign "Watchdog" but I know it's pretty popular (especially w/K-9 units). Most of the units I was in used numerical call signs although that wasn't always the case. I remember some being "Day Break" "Sundance" and "Night Train".

If you guys that know me want a good laugh, I started off taking Forensic's at John Jay College. Made it 3 years into it and then changed my mind, couldn't take it anymore. I was originally going to go for a masters in forensic sciences and then get a job with the police but I just didn't have the heart for it. Too much out there and I give credit to those who do.

It seems a couple of us have done this stuff for a long time. For me, it was 8 1/2 years Air Military Police/Security and coming up on 16 years Sheriff's Corrections Officer/Supervisor. I hang out with the crooks and then come home to my house of fantasy!

Cool thread, and I have often wondered about the correlation, too!

I'm currently a volunteer police officer--no difference from a regular police officer except that I don't get paid a salary! I work in the corporate world by day and fight crime at night! I love law enforcement!

Thread ressurection.

I got a question for those fourm members would are or have previously been in the US military.

What is "typical" rank progression in the enlisted rank like?

I've been a corporal (E-3 equivalent, I am estimating) for *cough* years now, mainly due to a couple of trade changes, personal choice and a ingrained unwillingness to seek and accept responsibilty.

cops and military have my utmost respect. along with firefighting, these three jobs are the most dangerous and the most thankless. god bless our armed forces, police and fireman!!! without them our lives would be chaos.

Maybe.:confused2

But I've been doing this too long, lost too much kit along the way, and love the people and work too much to quit.

I'm sure one day I'll move on to something else, but I'm hoping that something else is retirement.

After 20 years of service, you should be at least an E-7 at a minimum. Although E-8 is where you want to be at when reaching 20.

You should be holding each rank for about 3 or 4 years. So, yeah...you're way behind where you should be.

That's what everyone keeps telling me.

Go figure.

Does the US have an up or out policy as I've been told? That is to say, progress up through the ranks or get out.

Yes, it’s called “High Year of Tenure”.

http://usmilitary.about.com/od/navypromotions/a/hyt.htm

It’s actually easy to get promoted in the US military, but it will take hard work (studying) and a willingness to take a leadership role.

Just look at it this way, the more rank you have, the more money you will make. With more money, you can buy more statues and be a better provider for your family. That alone should be enough to motivate you to take responsibility and look forward to career progression.

Besides, wouldn’t you prefer to give the orders than be the one following them? Really, the more rank you have, the less work you do. :)

Military High School, Military Academy (College) And active service US Army. Now a civilian!

But I miss the service everyday. And constantly consider law enforcement. But most likely to old for it now for it in NYS.

Always have been a fan of comics, comic art and pop culture!

After checking a few sites online, I can safely say that I'm actually more of an E-4 (OR-4), comparable to an US Army Specialist in the sense that I hold no leadership duties or qualifications.

The only other person still in the Forces remaining from my first trade (Infantry) course in 1990 is this man, Lieutenant Colonel Matthew P. Haussmann, CD. He was the commanding officer of the The Royal Westminster Regiment (Vancouver, BC) from 2005- 2009. One hell of a good guy back in the day.

We started 45 candidates on day 1 and graduated 28, if memory serves.

kind of reminds me of this guy....related?

My father was a Trident and Los Angeles class submarine captain ... small world. :)

I have a ton of family and friends in the military, but I "fought in the trenches" of the school system as a teacher for a while, myself.

I've a cousin who just retired after 35 years of teaching at the secondary level. He refuses to even drive by the school.

AS for your father, that's quite something. Can't be more than a handful of submarine skippers in the world. Hell of an accomplishment!

Would not think so as Haussmann is of Germanic origins, while the picture you posted is of British actor/ comedian Alfred " Benny" Hawthorne Hill. I doubt there would be any relation.
