I thought it would be fun to try to get some conversations going about classic issues that any comic fan has definitely read, and new fans definitely need to check out if they havenít.

I have been filling in gaps in my collection lately which has resulted in reading a lot out of my long boxes the past few weeks.

Last night I pulled out Fantastic Four #249

Damn, now THAT is a great comic book!

A mysterious foe that the FF have never encountered before appears on the streets on NYC and beats the tar out of the FF like never before, or never since.

In my opinion, this issue spotlights Ben Grimm in one of the most characterizing sequences I had ever read up to that time. Though badly beaten, as Ben mentions never having been hit that hard before, Ben recoups enough to see Sue in trouble and doesnít hesitate to launch himself once again at the foe that he knows damn well he has no hope of beating...but he'll be damned if he isn't going to try!

Another nice Ben moment was a subtle sequence where a friend of Johnny's meets Ben for the first time and her polite shock and hesitation at his appearance are shown and touched upon, but not in a way that the writer tries to beat you over the head with it.

John Byrne gave us the pictures and the words in this issue, and this was back when Byrne was firing on all cylinders! This issue is part one of a two part tale that finishes in the anniversary 250th issue of Marvelís first family. That issue is equally impressive and guest stars Spider-Man, Captain America, and the X-Men team of Cyclops, Colossus, Storm, Nightcrawler, and Angel as youíve never seen them before!

Here is a little taste of whats in store for you newbies if you want to pick this issue up, and a great stroll down memory lane for those of us longer in the comic tooth!:dork:

It is my hope that we can generate some interest in back issue discussion with threads like this, so if you have any you want to share, please toss them out. If you need help with pics, just let me know and I will see what I can come up with!

What say you all? What are your thoughts on FF #249? :thumbs2:

Look at that newsprint! Loved Byrne's run! I was in High School when this issue came out, my friends and I poured over the pages. F4 was an adventure, sci-fi book again. So much story was packed between the covers. Loved it! I love the smell of old newsprint comics!
