Minibust, or simply an standing erect anatomical study.

I would go for the whole ball of wax... start learning everything at once. You will have success and failure along the way, but when I started I was in for a penny, in for a pound and I have only ever worked on two busts...

Now if you are not a jump in the pool kinda person, then maybe try the bust route to dip your toes in.

When I took the Chris Walas course taught at Wonderfest, we sculpted a bust first. I think a bust is okay to start with (less stuff to go wrong with) and you can build your confidence with that. Don't use it as a crutch tho. Build your skills and them sculpt a full figure.

Study a lot of anatomy books. Learn the skeleton and muscles and how they relate to each other. Get pics of bodybuilders (male and female) off the web and study those to see how muscles stretch and bunch up.

Practice is the most important thing. You first pieces will probably not look all that great (but who knows--they may), but the more you sculpt the better you'll get.
