Oh COME ON.. you KNOW you will get bored today :)

Here's another shot... I may take some newer shots today as well given that all of these are a touch out of date... Granted I haven't even worked on the piece in months... but still.

excellent eye... Yessir I did. Many reasons why I wanted to use the pink stuff.

The piece is HUGE, and I wanted to work faster. The pink stuff is so gooey and soft that building it up was a breeze AND easy on the thumbs.

Also I am caring a lot less these days about how pretty a WIP looks and I have taken to using a lot more mixed media materials, drawing right on the piece (as you can see) and whatever else... what matters is the end result which will all get a nice thin coat of grey primer to show off the skin textures etc, I have laid in there.

Hey Kdawg,

It's good to have you back! :thumbs2: With every piece you put out, I am more and more amazed!

What amazed me the most was the amount of detail that was put into the head! :jawd:

Just out of curiosity, are you planning on transferring anything to wax? Since this is a quarter scale figure, do you find that transferring stuff like the head and hands are not necessary for you?

Thanks!

YO :)

Thank you first of all... and to answer your questions.

Definitely avoiding wax like the plague with this piece. In fact the only wax on it is the seams on his gloves. I basically wanted this to be an exercise in getting every detail I wanted in clay. Why? Clay can be brushed down so well. The forms can blend together and seem so much more like flesh. Wax is great for those tiny tiny scribes and pours etc... but clay affords me so much opportunity to make it look more organic.

I do think that being bigger in size helps with not needing wax. I have worked with wax long enough now, that I have realized... you know... I have enough control to do a lot of this stuff in clay. This entire piece has been a great big exercise in taking my sculpting to my next level of maturation.

I was going to pitch this piece at first... but I have very much lost interest in doing it for any other reason besides Walt Simonson... I met him last year at SDCC and he is not only responsible for everything I love about Thor, but the man is such a sweetheart as is Weezie. I started this piece 2 days after I got back from Cali.

Here's a newer pic... you can see all of the different materials I'm using.

Aves
Pink Sculpey
dog collar spike (helmet)
styrene
copper and brass
wood
leather
wax
card stock paper

You name it... and I am not even done yet.

I may try the cape in actual resin dipped strips of cloth over a frame of wire mesh and flat brass stock as an armature...

in my oven... boy I should I have taken a pic of that!!!

the door had to be open as he wouldn't fit. I had to basically make an oven extension with foil.

He rested on the open door and I ran foil from top of oven to bottom of open door. Basically a tin foil tent of several layers thick. I baked per normal and supervised. The counter never even got warm it works so well...

I have done it a few times. But you go through a monster amount of foil. :)

Wow! I definitely do see all the different materials your using. I love seeing sculpts that use a good blend of different materials! I think that's one of the main elements I loved about your Hawkman...and Atrocitus! I'm going to have to check out your facebook page later since it's banned here in my office. But I think this is my first time seeing you work with actual metal tho!

Your work is top notch man! There is so much that people like us can learn from you and your sculpts! And I am not trying kiss any #ss here. I sincerely mean what I am writing.

Thanks Kdawg!

Thanks for posting the WIP's Keith. I love seeing how other people work.
I have started drawing all over my sculpts as i have found it helps with visually getting things right. Especially in portrait work, you are able to convey some of the emotion or look you are trying to achieve just by adding the pupils.

I can probably do that. I don't have any shots of them together. Bill is 1/4 and Thor is 1/5 scale so there is quite a bit of difference... BUT cleverly positioned camera angles could be a fun little battle scene.

It will indeed be finished... Here is the long and short of it.

We are building a house in 2013. Currently we are renting a tiny ass condo and every tool, sculpt, ounce of clay, wax I have is currently in storage. This is why you have seen the digital stuff from me ramp up for the last 4 months and more. I put my stuff away when we were selling the house, and was doing the afore-mentioned Bowen Thang... So it's not ideal, I can't work on my baby... But as soon as I can, I will fire it all back up.

majestic1
01-31-2013, 05:31 AM
I really think you should pitch this sculpt to Sideshow, they seem to pride themselves on releasing the more obscure characters like Bill, just look at Venomsaurus, Skarr, Madam Hydra etc.

It would be an instant buy for me is this was released as a 1/4 PF.

Gentlemen... thank you... before you get excited that I have an update to share (sorry)... I can at least come in here and tell you that, while I know it's a way off... I will be able to start working on Bill again sometime hopefully later this year. We are building a house this summer, and currently renting a tiny place between moves. I have no where to work.
