I saw the Serenity movie trailer and thought it was kinda cool, and now that they're rerunning firefly on Sci Fi, I decided to put a season pass on it (I've never seen it before). The first epidsode I saw (where they robbed some train) was OK . Does it get better? Worse? Anyone got any comments?
I'm NOT a Whedon fan, refuse to watch Buffy, but this show seems okay...

Well, I don't know Sam, I actually enjoyed the first episode and it got better from there, but yet again, it doesn't sound like you enjoyed the pilot to begin with. The episodes written by Ben Edlund (the creator of "THE TICK") are GOLD!!! I also can't watch Buffy, I tried, but I just didn't like it, but I LOVE Firefly!! You should give at least 2 more episodes a try!!

Was that the first episode, the train robbery? I'm interested, I'm not going to cancel my season pass or anything.

By first episode, I'm assuming you mean, the Pilot, right? The Pilot is called "Serenity" (like the movie) and it pretty much introduces all the characters. It's a two parter I believe.

Yeah, according to tv.com, the first episode IS the Train Robbery but it's not the Pilot. I think you should see the pilot first.

What can I say about Joss Whedon besides the fact that if you have denied yourself Buffy for five seasons like I did, you are doing yourself a disservice?
I know - How about this pic from Wondercon in San Fran this year? :eplus2: PS - Madjazz has dropped 27 lbs. since this pic was taken! :buttrock:

Yeah, Firefly is okay, but there is no way in hell I'm watching Sarah Michelle Gellar for any ammount of time. Fu$# that beyotch. It's okay to just like some of the dudes stuff without taking the whole plunge... ;)

Give it a try Sam. The Train Job episode is kewl, but the pilot, is great. Gotta catch it too.

Fox did this show a disservice when it was on air. They aired it out of order.
Since hearing of Sci-Fi reairing them in order, I taped the first three episodes.
Will have to find time and try to watch all of them soon.
I watched it when Fox aired it back then, but I didn't think much of it and gave up on it for awhile.
Maybe seeing them in order this time around might convince me otherwise.
The movie, I'll definitely check out.
As for Buffy, I never got into the series till after running into the Season 5 finale where Buffy sacrificed herself to save Dawn. FX started running reruns, two episodes per night, and I gave it a try. I got hooked. Great show. Especially the first three seasons.

I could never get into Firefly. The whole western SF route really isn't my cup of java.
I liked Buffy (TV) but not so much Gellar.
Eliza Dushku, Alexa Davalos, Charisma Carpenter and Amy Acker fan all the way.

I was at WonderCon with Madjazz, and saw the Serenity trailer. Thought it was cool.
So I bought the Firefly DVD set. Just started watching it this month.
Finished the first disc this week.
Wasn't sure at first, but it's really starting to grow on me.

That's exactly it, the characters grow on you. It's like a perfect combination of good wrting, great characters and good actors that play those parts very well. That is a rare thing, but I think it happened to Firefly.

I'm an Alison Hannigan fan myself! Mmmmmmm, yummy.
Buffy is not all about Sarah MG. This is truly an ensemble cast. I agree that Seasons 1-3 are really cool, but would add Seasons 5 and 7 to the mix. Season 4 had some good episodes (wasn't Hush in this Season?) although I didn't like the bad guy so much. Season 6 also had its moments, including (OMG) the Musical episode. Season 3 is my personal favorite.
Try it, Try it! Sam - I was once exactly like you, with the exact same opinion for the exact same reasons. You owe it to yourself to at least try a few episodes.

Yo Sammy, Firefly is great. I think the Serenity movie will be somewhat okay, it looks good, but some of the fighting on the screen looked really lame.

Yo, I'll keep with firefly G. It seems cool enough.
But I ain't diggin on buffy. I don't get into teens, vampires, or vampire teens. Nope. No way. Now Kate Beckinsale in that Underworld movie, WORD. I'll say it again, WORD. She is one foxy vampire chica...

Buffy was pretty pedestrian, but the Angel series more than made up for it. I can't stand teenagers either. It would be nice if people could just go from child, to adult in a matter of minutes, instead of being idiotic for 9 years or so.
You'll like Firefly, some great episodes. I'm looking forward to the movie, I think it will be pretty spiffy.

I actually had this thought back then. That Buffy was silly cause at the time it was on the WB, a network filled with shows aimed at the younger generation, like Dawson's Creek (bleh!). I'm really glad I tried the show out. And I agree that it was an ensemble cast.

the series I'm waiting for to come out on DVD right now, is Carnivale Season 2. Season One was unreal, and just about as cool as cool gets.
I really want to see Season two but those bastards at HBO are making some problems.
MiamiLoco
08-07-2005, 03:02 PM
last I heard, wasn't Carnivale CANCELLED??!! If so, then everything that they set up in the 2 seasons is now pointless :( I was going to buy Season 1 and watch Season 2, but after I heard of the cancellation, I figured "what's the point"?
Tommy Allison

Well, they cancelled the tick before the season was even over, and it was worth picking up on DVD. Same with Firefly. I'm hoping that they pick it up after all the legal bull**** is fixed. Some idiot believes that it was stolen from him, and you know, if they're killing the show, they probably did. HBO may be in the wrong, but I am hoping that they can get this thing resolved. I really wanted to see Season 2, to see how it turned out.

Yeah, but come on, The Tick??!! It's not like they were leading to something like Carnivalle was. There wasn't much "mystery" going on in The Tick, LOL!!

I'm not hatin' The Tick, I have it on DVD. When you compare it to the Comic or the Animated Show, it's not as great though :( I do love the episode where they have the JLA kind of club. Hilarious Episode.

Just watched the last ep of Firefly on DVD.
Wife and I really enjoyed it.
Next week we'll watch the additional footage.
I think some of the best eps where the ones that never aired.
Loved that scene when River shoots those guys.
Looking forward to seeing Serenity.

Dark Horse, it's up to issue 2 (of 3) right now:

I'm sure there will probably be a TPB before the movie comes out (Sept. 30).

My wife and I tried to watch the first one and had a hard time getting through it.
I had seen it before when it was new starting with the second episode. Didnt like it then but the movie trailer also made me check it out again. Still dont care for it.
...refuse to watch Buffy...
Your loss...I thought Buffy sounded fruity before I tried it as well. It's actually a great show though. I'm willing to bet that most of the other people who don't care for Buffy haven't given it a fair shot either. By that I mean that they probably haven't watched many episodes in order. It has strong continuity, so you can't just catch random episodes on TV and expect to get a full appreciation of the show. The ideal way to watch it is obviously to rent it on DVD beginning with the first season.
