"Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength."
- Arnold Schwarzenegger

Hi guys,

this weekend I was able to add a very special statue to my collection. A statue I had heard of before, seen pictures of before, was curious about before but never dreamt I would ever be able to add it to my collection before.
Which statue I am talking about you are asking?

Well, none other than the incredible and illustrious FS of Grendel Prime!
When I got the chance to add this imposing statue to my collection I did not hesitate and I am overly happy and proud that Mr. Prime has accepted my invitation and is now residing in my collection! :D
My statue has number 1,933 of 2,000 and it is an amazing statue from every angle you look at it and from botton till top.
The first thing I noticed when I looked at the statue were the characterstic spikes on the back of Grendel's shoulders and arms and the decaying skull with the destructive bullet-hole on the base which is meant as a silent warning of the doom which awaits anyone which opposes Grendel Prime.

But the goodies do not stop there. The statue has lots of details ranging from the iron chain on Grendel's belt to the buckle on his belt and boots.
The pistol on his belt looks cool and ready to be used and Grendel's mask looks a bit frightening with the great white eye-symbols on the otherwise black mask. It would have been tremendously cool if Grendel Prime would have held his powered sword in his hand but it is already great that we can see his sword attached to his belt at the back of his body. The statue has captured the danger surrounding Grendel Prime as well the great power which is inhibited in his body, perfectly.

Grendel Prime is an incredibly dangerous warrior and most skilled fighter and this statue shows that Grendel means business. This is a guy you better not mess with unless you want to end up buried six feet in the ground.
This is a man who will finish the task at hand no matter the odds and no matter the challenges he might meet. Grendel Prime is a bone-breaker, not a deal-breaker and if he has got to go through you to do what he has been ordered to, so be it.
Grendel Prime is a terminator; that is what he was designed to do and that is what he does best.
As such an action pose would have been great but I feel that the museum pose works wonderfully well as well since it shows that even when Grendel Prime is at ease, he can burst into action within the blink of an eye. Even when standing still there is a dynamic feeling of impending action surrounding Grendel Prime.

When taking all of this into account I come to the following scores for this statue (and please bear with me since this is the first time that I ever rate a statue! :D)

Sculpt: 8 out of 10
What's good: imposing stance, feeling of danger and power captured very well in the statue
What could be better: I would have loved to see a bit more dynamics added for example by having Grendel Prime hold his powered sword in his hands or by having his right arm raised holding his pistol as if he was about to terminate one of his opponents.

Paint (application): 7 out of 10
What's good: the painting is neat and well done and is true to the original from the comic books.
Why not a higher score: Grendel Prime's uniform is mostly black with the exception of his white eye-patches on his mask and the silver ornaments on his chest and the buckles on his belt, arms and boots.
The black is a very even black (no lighter and deeper blacks) and in my layman's opinion this statue does not have a very complicated paint scheme.

Base: 9 out of 10
What's good: I love the human skull with the devastating bullet hole and I like the fact that the base seems to be part of machinery or a machine room because Grendel is a cyborg and part machine himself.
What could be better: Not a whole lot IMHO. The base may be a bit flat and relatively simple but it does the trick and it does it well.

Accuracy (size comparison, likeness, extras, etc.): 9 out of 10
What's good: this is Grendel Prime and it really looks like he stepped right out of the comic books.
I furthermore really like his shoulder spikes: they are really cool and add a lot to the look of the statue and the impression it makes.
What could be better: it would have been incredibly cool if Grendel Prime's trademark powered sword and shield would have been included. That would have really taken this statue over the top!

Overall a score of 8.25 out of 10 which shows how impressed and happy I am with this statue! :buttrock:

Of course one pictures says more than a thousand words and that is why I will post a couple of pictures shortly. After all, Grendel Prime is a statue you should look at, not talk or read about...
Besides that I think it's good if you make up your own mind and come up with your own scores.

But before I post the pictures I would like to express my thanks to Wim who allowed me to add this behemoth to my collection.
Thanks a million Wim; it was a pleasure meeting you and I am thankful for your time and efforts!

Alright then, here we go. Get ready ro rumble with the most dangerous cyborg ever... just remember when things go out of hand just yield since Grendel Prime will otherwise not stop coming after you if he has decided you are a threat to him or his mission! :buttrock:

Have fun!

-----------------------------------------------

A cyborg (cybernetic organism) is an organism that is a self-regulating integration of artificial and natural systems.
Common usage of the term "cyborg" often implies that the biological components are human, although the term is not specifically that limited, a cyborg can consist of biological components of any living origin.

Background Information

Ten years after the death of Orion I, his son Jupiter was kidnapped from his home/prison at a base in the Dakota Black Hills by a lone Grendel in black full-body armour, called by the other characters "The Paladin," and later known as Grendel-Prime.
During the Kahn's life the man that would come to be known as Grendel Prime was one of his most powerful warriors, and his most loyal paladins.
Even in his final years, Assante knew of the possibility that Orion's widow Laurel Kennedy, could not be trusted and that the life of his child would remain in constant jeopardy.
It was Prime who would be given the incredible task of protecting the only blood-related heir to the throne in the likely event of Orion's death.
In transforming into Grendel Prime, Prime's body suffered immense agony and at multiple points during the process he died and was revived. Prime's body was stripped of much of his flesh and blood, and robotic components were used to augment his form.
Prime was a solar-powered cyborg, and was built to be the ultimate warrior. Prime would also become Assante's ultimate weapon as he stripped the Sun Disc of some necessary components and had them built into Prime's mechanical body. Never actually trusting Kennedy, Orion let her know nothing of Prime's existence or purpose.

Laurel Kennedy in her role as regent sent the empire's elite Red Devils after the renegade Grendel and his hostage, further neglecting and alienating her daughter Crystal in the process.
Jupiter and the Grendel fled through wastelands and the wreckage of cities, across the ocean, and into the jungles of Africa. Along the way, they encountered not only the Red Devils but also bandits, mutants, pirates, dangerous wildlife, and other Grendels (both friend and foe). In the OPEC wastes, Grendel and Jupiter were captured by a band of rebels opposed to the misrule of Laurel Kennedy.

Grendel-Prime was disassembled and revealed as a solar-powered cyborg created by Orion I to protect Jupiter from political manipulators until he was old enough to assume the throne of the Grendel-Khan.
Jupiter was abducted from the rebel base by a group of vampires who took him back to their lair in Siberia. The rebels and their charismatic leader, Azif a-Barouk, accompanied Grendel-Prime to rescue the boy, and Grendel-Prime managed to slay the vampires' lord in the process - who turned out to be none other than Orion Assante's old foe, Pellon Cross.
Laurel Kennedy's rule was undermined by the lack of an heir, so she tried to arrange a suitable dynastic marriage for her daughter, Crystal.
But Crystal, who had begun an affair with her guard, a Grendel named Susan Veraghen, escaped the Black Hills complex and fled into the wilderness. Laurel became increasingly irrational, and effective rule of the empire passed to her minister, Abner Heath.

Ten years passed. Laurel Kennedy had been quietly displaced and imprisoned by Abner Heath, who took on the role of world leader. In attempting to hold the empire together Heath wanted to learn how to activate the Sun-Disc, Orion's most formidable weapon, but was met with continual failure. But during a televised worldwide broadcast Jupiter - now a young man - and Grendel-Prime made their move.
Grendel-Prime and his team captured the Imperial palace, and Jupiter raided the Black Hills complex, encountering a wasted and frail Laurel Kennedy. It turned out that the missing component of the Sun-Disk was contained within the body of Grendel-Prime.

He activated the weapon and destroyed the government's broadcasting satellites, enabling Jupiter to take over the airwaves and announce his succession. After Jupiter's coronation, Grendel-Prime took his leave of Jupiter and disappeared off into the wastelands.

Powers and Abilities

Grendel Prime is a cyborg created by Orion I.
His mechanical body is solar powered in nature, but he can recharge himself using electrical power sources. His body possesses superhuman strength and durability. He is generally invincible when fully powered, however if he is unable to recharge himself he will lose power through exertion. When Prime's power is low he is more susceptible to injury and defeat by enemies.

He is an expert at unarmed combat, capable of fighting many foes simultaneously. Prime is also adept with many forms of weapons, particularly his powered sword and shield and handguns.
Within Prime's mechanical body Orion also built in the necessary components to operate the Sun Disc, an extremely powerful weapon commissioned by the Khan.

Grendel Prime often uses a laser sword in combat.
In the Batman crossover, he shows numerous abilities. He can make his shoulder spikes stick out of his body like short spears. He can survive being hit by a tractor trailer and shrugs off standard bullets. He can kick through the bottom of a bridge and can easily punch through police bulletproof shields. He is resistant to electrical charges, although they can knock him out of they are powerful enough.
He can create a solar flare around his body that can melt most materials, although this drains him of much of his energy.
If he is disassembled, he can remotely control his separated body parts.

Awesome review, Rainer!! And super awesome photos!! I was delighted on the amount of information that you provided. Excellent statue with a very imposing sculpt (for a museum pose). Definitely, one of Bowen's best. Congratulations!! :buttrock:

Interesting fact: that hole in the skull is not a bullethole, but an arrow hole. And the skull is the skull of the original Grendel, Hunter Rose. In the Batman/Grendel crossover, Grendel Prime goes back in time to retrieve the skull; Robin shoots the skull out of GP's hands, leaving the hole.
