I, like I am sure most kids, went through a dinosaur obsession when I was young. I mean, what is not to like…giant lizards with awesome names, some with built-in armor and weapons? Count me in! But, it’s been a very long time since then, and I don’t collect dinosaur items anymore. However, when we decided to decorate my second son’s bedroom with a dinosaur theme before he was born last October, this statue really caught my eye. Not only did it fit with the theme of his room (I am not keeping it in his room until he’s older), but I also loved the parent-child aspect of this one, and I thought it would be a meaningful gift for my son…something he can keep when he is an adult.

Being more into the super hero themed statues, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this one when it arrived. Let me tell you, though, the quality of this piece blew me away instantly out of the box.

The sculpted details on this are off the charts. Careful attention was clearly paid to every aspect of this beast to make it appear as lifelike as possible. The skin is covered with cracks and folds, lumps and bumps, wrinkles and scales. The back plates look absolutely stunning…the ridges and layers on the adult plates really give an aged and weathered appearance when compared to the baby’s plates (as a side note, I must say I’m seriously disappointed to learn that scientists think the plates were NOT used as armor…way to be a ruiner of dreams, science!). The tail spikes have ridges, splits, and chips sculpted in, giving the appearance of having been in a few battles (don’t ruin the spikes for me, science…these spikes are flat-out built-in weapons of destruction, and you can’t tell me any different!). It’s almost like the sculptor was looking at a photo when creating this piece, it is extremely lifelike.

The details that are so evident on the dinosaurs themselves are somewhat lacking on the base, however. It is a nice base, there is just not much too it. It’s essentially an environmental base that depicts mom and baby in a muddy valley, or maybe a riverbed. The footprints in the mud are a nice touch, though.

The paint job is solid, but not spectacular. There are no significant errors in the paint job, but this is perhaps the category that knocks this piece down a few notches from ‘masterpiece’ to ‘good’. A little bit of colour would have gone a long way on this piece. For example, some of the details on the skin, such as scales and rough spots, could have been highlighted to stand out more. The paint on the back plates, though, is very well done.

I really love the pose and design of this piece. The interaction between parent and child is classic, in my opinion. Those of you with kids know that the raw instinct to protect your child is incredibly powerful. I see that instinct shining through in this piece. The baby is busy chowing down on some plants, oblivious to the world around him, care-free and filling his belly. The mother, though…she’s up on her hind legs, taking in every detail of her environment. Maybe she heard a twig snap in the nearby forest, or smells a potential predator nearby…she’s ready to take action, and I don’t think you want to be the one she thinks is coming after her child! This piece is also much bigger than it looks in photos…at over two feet long, it has great presence in a collection.

The statue is very solid and sturdy, and even though the mother is up on hind legs, there does not seem to be a risk of her tipping over. It has good weight to it, but is fairly easy to move around if necessary. Four of the larger back plates are removable for packaging purposes. The plates fit nicely into slots on the back, and are held in place by metal pegs and gravity. The seams around the plates are hardly noticeable, if at all

Sculpt: 9/10, The dinosaurs themselves are extremely detailed and lifelike, but the base is lacking some detail.

Paint: 7.5/10, No major visible flaws, but could have used a little bit of colour and some highlights to bring out the incredible details of the sculpt.

Design: 9/10, LOVE the parent-child aspect. The contrast of poses between parent and child exudes that natural parental instinct.

Production & Build Quality: 9/10, very sturdy and well built; seams blend well and are hardly visible. Looks very much like the prototype pictures.

Overall: 8.6, An excellent statue. Fans of dinosaurs or just fans of artwork in general, will be very pleased with this piece.

Thanks, bud. Yeah, these dinosaurs are very nice. I briefly owned the Dilophosaurus maquette as well (actually won it from Sideshow), and it was very nice as well. If they did a really nice T-rex or Triceratops, I would consider buying those to complete my "trinity" of dinos.

I would by a T-rex. Had my eye on that Weta Kong vs Rex for a long time.

Sweet review, Bmutha!

Absolutely LOVE the reason why you bought this and the significance it means to you. Your little boy is lucky to have such a loving dad. Here's to you guys and looking forward to the fella joining the statue community someday.

God bless you and yours, my friend.
