Spiderman: Back in Black is a storyline with its own mini series also published in the comic book series The Amazing Spider-Man #539-543. The story takes place immediately after Marvel's Civil War event and depicts what happened to Spider-Man during and after the event.

The story is about Spiderman's illicit actions in the aftermath of events of the Civil war. Hence, he dons the black suit, modeled after the original alien symbiote costume as it emphasizes his aggression in his efforts to resolve life changing events. He is often seen throughout without his mask on as well as showing his rage and thirst for vengeance against those who have wronged him and those close to him. There was also a Marvel What if that follows this in an alternate storyline and outcome.

I for one am glad that Sideshow Collectibles decided to make good on this story by presenting us with the Spiderman Back in Black Comiquette. With great power there must also come ... great responsibility... Nuff said!

Since childhood the masked man known as Spiderman has held his iconic presence throughout the years. Very few characters can transcend generations of readers and movie goers and still hold an impact. Though he has changed and progressed in the comics from the books I grew up reading these changes and alternate views have breathed new life for the web-slinging hero for another generation to come. As well it as given those of us who have been around for a while something new to unravel. I was really happy to have this as my definitive Spidey piece

I was from day one and still am impressed with the presence of this statue. The dynamic pose really brings Spidey to life. All the muscle tone is really a masterwork of detail. This is a representation of perfect fluid motion that sines through in the sculpt from every angle.

The base on this is ideal in aspect. Having thrown down his enemies and anyone that would stand in his way to find the vigilante justice he seeks in the storyline. Three of his classic foes lye at his feet or whats left of them anyways in a excellently textured and detailed rubble footing. Its dramatization at its best!

This statue also shares the same base and sculpt and rubble part of the base as the Iron-Spider statue by Sideshow. I think that does a disservice to both of them. Having nearly the exact same sculpt (only minus the parts on the base) is kind of cheap but doesn't lessen the statue any in terms of its quality only its quantity and uniqueness.

Summary

Sculpt: 10

I feel very strongly about this sculpt. Its not possible to encapsulate every version of Spidey in a single presentation but this version covers much of what I love about the character. The detail and fluidity in this really goes a long way on its own merit. The eyes are a bit bulgy but i think it fits the concept art.I dont feel this is a piece that requires to be seen first hand to see the excellence or presence in the sculpt although in hand is the place this should be...excelsior!

Paint & Mixed Media: 10
Solid paint job here. Spiderman himself is fluid. One might think it would be easy to do a solid color with highlights and it might very well be easy in some aspects via comparison to something more complicated but this is not lacking. The base as well as a great real stone rubble feel to it. Its quite realistic in its own fashion and acts as a great supplement to the pallet of the character. Scorpions tail, Doc's arm and the piece from the Goblins glider have not been overlooked in the paint app either. They all have incredibly smooth detail and highlights.

Design: 9.5

Conceptually pleasing to the eye from any angle the The design is simple in ways but holds its ground in its presentation. Everything is seemingly accurate in scale though I had to guess a bit at the piece that represents the Goblin. I knew the shape but couldn't quite pin down what it was from at first look and it does seem to be a little larger than it should be but that is relative and doesn't distract. It has good balance and a decent weight is easily assembled with no visible seems on display. As a stand alone piece not in comparison to its almost identical companion the Iron-Spider I feel this would display well with any Spiderman set up in its scale.

Production & Build Quality: 9.5
This came pretty much spot on to the prototype in sculpt and paint but a few small QC issues are discernible. There are a few spots where the paint lines are not clean. Particularly on the spider and his eyes but they are not too bad really. Doc's arm, Scorpions tail and the Goblins glider pieces all sit somewhat loosely. They wont fall off even if bumped put if you pick the statue up to move it its possible they could be knocked loose. Spiderman himself also does not sit 100% perfect. There's no leaning issues nor will he fall off the base but his right foot peg does not go completely flush with the base. That might be a piece by piece issue and is not really a cause for concern as far as I can tell. I have had him on display for sometime with no prevalent issues at all.

OVERALL: 9.75
Overall I think this is a classic work from Sideshow displaying the quality that most have come to expect from them over the years even if it has lessened as of late. I dont think anyone would be disappointed in adding this statue to their collection. Thanks for checking out the review true believers! :buttrock:

Thanks Bmutha,

Yeah the black costume appeals to me a ton more than his red n blue PJs. This is among my first of statues and remains one of my coveted pieces.

As for the scale that is questionable as well. He is a little larger than my Black Queen comiquette but not by much and is bigger also than Predator Bad Blood but is dwarfed somewhat by my Star Wars PF. I think most of the comiquettes are slightly smaller than 1:4 so I put it in 1:5 as he is defiantly larger than 1:6. All the comiquettes and maquettes seem questionable as far as scale.

As for the pics I have been taking some photography workshops and have learned how to get more of what I want in my pics straight out of the camera with little to no editing in post.
Learning about depth of field and portrait photography has upped my game some. This is the first time I tried using additional lighting. I took two small lamps and placed them on the floor with comic book backers around 1/2 the bulb to reflect the light up and another light overhead to even out the light and get rid of shadows cast by the other two lights.
The pics turned out really nice and it saves me a ton of time editing.

Well done...you're putting some serious effort into the pics and it's paying off.

It's funny how he wore the suit full time for only a 4 year stretch back in the 80's, and yet it's still around. It's such a simple design, yet so effective. I am slowly convincing my son that the black suit is best!

I have this one and I display it with the Scorpions tail relocated so it sort of wraps around the front for a little more visibiltity.
