Not quite statues but lead, hand painted figurines of Marvel characters.

http://www.marvel-figurines.co.uk/index.html

This is by the company that did the Lord of The Rings set. They were quite good so these should be fairly high standard also. I think I'm going to get these.

They are quite small Bulls but the detail on the LOTR ones was excellent. Plus they all look great displayed together on the purpose built display plinth.

Just don't stick 'em next to any FS Bowen pieces!

Yeah, I've actually just subscribed to this to get the free Spidey figurine. Hell at 5.99 a month, it ain't gonna break the bank and I can always cancel if they turn out to be crap. Though I doubt they will be.

I won't go there though. Starting on the lead figures would just open a whole new can of worms for me. :banghead:

I have seen prime-time television adverts for this! Prime-time! With a really overly dramatic voice-over. Spidey, Magneto, Surfer and Doom look to be inspired by similar poses to the Bowen Designs versions, which suggests a good eye on the part of the designers. Shame that didn't extend to going for a classic Beast...

I might check this out...

Im guessing about $10 airmail or $5 surface per issue at most???? Just a guestimate, not sure how much the figures weigh, probably be less. If someone adopts you for this, easier to save up a few at a time rather than send each issue individually

Sure thing. Don't know about Bullseye, but Punisher is confirmed.

Here is a list of the five main groups comprising the collection, and some characters that will be included:

http://www.marvel-figurines.co.uk/marvelution.html

Pose-wise, the Thor piece looks like it could be the best depiction of the character I have ever seen! If BD's 'revisited' Thor ended up looking like this, so help me I might even want it. Fingers crossed it won't.

Just saw it in the shops, quite small, but I'll keep getting them for a bit.

The trouble with adopting someone for this is that these kind of mags disappear from the shops after a while, and they only coninue stock them for customers who order them. Therefore you wouldnt be able to pick and choose your characters, you'd have to have every issue

Announcement for non-British types interested in these figures!!!

I just whizzed down to my LCS, where they are planning to get these in through Diamond Previews UK. They would be delighted to service the needs of any people from outside these Isles who would like to buy these figures, or certain characters at any rate.

Anyone interested in them can PM me, and I will give you the e-mail of Jeff Chahal, probably the nicest comic book guy I have ever encountered, so you can deal direct with the store. Just be sure to tell him Jess Harrold sent you.

You can actually order individual figures direct from their web site if you want. You don't need to get them all. It was/is the same with their LOTR range.

I don't know how much they are through Previews - my guess is they would be the same price, with the retailer's cut built in to that, so they should be selling them at whatever the RRP is. I suppose my LCS guy would make sure he wasn't losing on the shipping too.

As for ordering single pieces direct, do you have to know the exact issue number you want and have to start a subscription at a certain issue, then end it later? That's all I could find on the site. The problem with that is I've been reading on the Masterworks forum (http://p206.ezboard.com/fmarvelmasterworksfansitefrm1.showMessage?topicID=4085.topic) that the order keeps chopping and changing, and that folks are receiving pieces in a different order to what it says on the website. If you have a link to ordering individual pieces, that would be great!

At the moment you can only order number 1 (Spidey) individually as I think that is all that is available. But if it is anything like the LOTR range then as the others are released they get added to the individual order list. You don't have to subscribe to order single figures. I guess that will become a bit clearer once there are more figurines available. As to the Masterworks Forum, I haven't visited there but are people saying they have already got more than one figurine? I thought these had literally just been announced. It is possible that the order can get changed slightly but I didn't experience that with the LOTR ones I collected (admittedly I only got about 13 of them).

Strontium Dog
09-02-2005, 11:03 AM
Well I've just looked at the Masterworks Forum and yes Jess you're right, they've been available for a few months now (although not on general sale it seems). Some people have already got up to number 5!Looks like we've got some catching up to do people!

I was thinking that a few pieces look like they are based on elements of the Bowen statues and the comic cover left-hand corner"bullet" images. Spidey for sure.

As for Thor, what did I tell you JDH? Isn't it a beauty? And that pose looks to me like the classic Buscema corner box "bullet" that I've discussed with Bowen and that we and a few others love so well. That's exactly the kind of pose that I want to see for the next classic Thor Bowen fullsize.

Along with a matching BRB, of course. But I digress...

So, into the realm of lead figurines we charge!

Our credit cards, that is...

Live the dream!

I was dubious at first but I took a wander over to WHSmith today and ended up buying issue #1. :) It's nice to see that the characters will all be in their current costumes which haven't been done to death, which is particularly noticable on the Wolverine & Beast who sport their Astonishing X-Men clobber.

We're supposed to be getting these through Diamond also, but they appear to be running a tad late. I did notice on the new order form that after issue #7 there's goinmg to be a special for £9.99 which features the Hulk as the figurine and he's HUGE. :)

Nice little set, this. I was surprised as hell at the nice quality. Also, they're bigger than the LOTR ones too. With the base, Spidey stands at approx 3 and a half inches tall.

JDH
09-02-2005, 04:20 PM
Who else is actually on the Diamond order form, Angie?

You could make a tidy profit flogging these to international customers, you know...

valemeister
09-02-2005, 04:42 PM
It's all in Previews UK, rather than the Diamond order form, but we know the the first 5 will be:

Spider-man
Wolverine
Doctor Octopus
Thing
Magneto

#6 and #7 are Blade & Silver Surfer (not sure in which order) and the first special is the Hulk.

Since we're a part of FPI, I really don't think that making a profit is really my choice. ;)

I come across words with letter omissions between British English and American English every so often and find it quite sad. Aluminium becomes aluminum, jewellery is jewelry to name but two. Thief of anecdotes. I told you that.

As for the differences between various words and spellings, what springs to mind is the old adage that England and America are two countries divided by a common language.

No you didn't, I've known that since long afore I 'met' you!

You, however, may well have reinforced my knowledge. :)

One pertinent language conflict for our little hobby is the 'licence'/'license' distinction.

Okay I think these look cool, does anyone know if they will be found in comic shops in the UK? I went down to Forbidden Planet in London yesterday but didnt see them, can you only get them via subscription? Alas, I'll only be in the UK for a few months, so it wouldn't make much sense for me to partially subscribe.

My LCS has the first three - Spidey, Doc Ock and Wolverine, and will be getting more. Shoot me a PM and I'll give you their contact details. Hope you're enjoying the UK so far!

Hey jdh.goodgrief,
These look cool. Would love to add each pieces to my collection. What are chances someone living in US can subscribe and what is total cost with shipping for each? Sorry if I missed previous replies. Don't have time to read or I'll be late for work. Thanks a lot!

What do you think the letters mean? Initials of the painter, perhaps?

I dont know the numbering system they use but Comics International magazine said it was a big success for Eaglemoss the magazine makers and that they shifted 120,000 units of issue 1

I can't figure out the numbering system either. It's more of a secret code! I wonder about the production numbers. I'm sure they are making tons of these.

BTW, I love these. Some are better than others but I have very few complaints. Big thanks to my mate Strontium Dog for helping me out!
