New announcement!

We've been working on this for some time...

We will be using the 1984 digital files to make this figure as accurate as our 1/4 Genisys Arnold.

I don't doubt they might turn out a great product, but speaking solely about acuracy on the likeness of Arnold.. how are they going about that?
Do they have access to a high-res digital scan of Arnold from 1984 like Chronicle does? Are they using a life-cast of Arnolds face? Or is it being sculpted from scratch?

That's what will set all of Chronicle's Arnold pieces apart from anyone else's in my opinion.. I don't know of another instance when a life-cast of Arnold has ever been used for a collectible piece..

So Paul, just out of curiosity, when you say you are using digital files from 1984 what exactly were they originally produced with; was it done using some sort of laser scanner of arnold's head (or a casting) or something entirely different?

Stuff like zbrush wasn't available in those days and the effects on films from that era were certainly not that great that a computer digital likeness could have fooled an audience so it just makes me curious how the files look so good from that period.

Whatever the answer I am sure this is gonna look amazing. grail gets thrown around a lot but this has more potential than most to achieve that instantly.

You gonna try get Arnold to do a signature run on these as well btw?

CallMe_Snake
06-12-2015, 08:39 AM
Can't speak for Paul but...

Apparently they're are able to use the digital file from Genisys for the likeness.

Back during the filming of the original Terminator film, Stan Winston took a life-cast of Arnold for the make-up and other effects.

All these years later, for the making of Genisys, Legacy Studios was able to do a high-res scan of that original life-cast for the digital Arnold in the new movie.

In essence, it's like they were able to go back in time and get Arnold to sit down and be scanned with today's tech. Pretty awesome stuff. :)

Thank you guys, we've actually had this license for almost a year, so it's not something we went after recently.

We have 1/4 King Conan on the Throne, 1/6th Movie Poster recreation and 1/4 Thulsa doom.

If King Conan performs well we can do 1/2 and 1-1 busts and props.

While doing Terminator Genisys the production gave us the CGI files for 1984 Arnold, what do you do with 84 Arnold? What don't you do with 84 Arnold? ;)

We'll be using these files to create our Conan products for ultimate accuracy.

If you've seen our 1/4 Genisys Arnold you know how accurate it really is. Arnold approved it with zero changes which is a first on the history of Arnold products ..... His Handlers told us it's the best likeness from the terminator franchise...

Would you guys consider doing a super deluxe version with switch out bearded/young heads and harem? You guys are so quickly becoming one of the most awesome statue makers and I don't even have anything in hand from you yet!!!

Yeah having an Arnold likeness this god is definitely something to maximize.

C'mon Jerry if they did another movie with Arnold would you at least think about more?

This is my Conan dream piece. So awesome and definitely fit for the movie King Conan. Could even do young and old gray bearded swithcout portraits.

I am thinking the same thing, Sledge. I hope Valeria is included in the movie poster recreation as well. I am not much of a 1/6 scale collector anymore but I'll make an exception in this case. I wonder if Paul would consider going 1/5 scale instead on the movie poster recreation piece.

What's the average price of a Chronicle 1/4 scale statue?

$499.50 plus shipping. Not hard to workout as they've only released two 1/4 pieces so far I believe, the Endo at $500 and the Terror dog at $499. Doesn't really tell you much though in reality.

Yeah, I get that. Its just the 10 month payment plan post was in direct response to someone posting about the possible high price of PCS 1/3 Conan. Wasn't sure if they were saying they had 10 months to pay that off, not CC related. So that works.

Chronicle CS

As far as I know with the exception of one company that copied our payment plans, we are the only one to offer a ten month.

Won't have Conan for SDCC, we are printing 1984 Arnold as the Terminator right now. But we should have something to look like shortly after.

Chronicle CS
08-30-2015, 09:53 AM
Resin is plastic?

We use PVC on several products in areas where there may be flex or easy breakage. The density is virtually the same as resin and once painted other than that piece being somewhat flexible, you wouldn't know unless we told you...

Paul

Enforcer
08-30-2015, 12:36 PM
I think that is an unhealthy fear of plastic. Just because the world has made a career out of using plastic for the vast majority of cheapo products out there doesn't mean it's a terrible choice. PVC is a very high quality form of resin plastic. We use it for our water systems, and people even build bows made of nothing but PVC. I think that's a pretty good testament to the strength of the material, and that is what matters as far as I am concerned, is strength and durability over weight.

Here's a thought: Kevlar weighs far less than steel yet is far stronger. Do we judge kevlar as cheap material because of it's weight?

I don't expect any of this to change minds, but not changing your mind doesn't make it any less true. PVC is a fantastic material and I will always welcome it when it is used with the best of intentions.

Darkhumor

Yeah, so Paul should make these King Conans completely pvc so there would be plenty left over and would sit in the warehouse unsold, like SSC Man of Steel pf still is.

I remember when plenty of people were excited for that piece, and then they dumped it as soon as reviews started coming in that it was pvc. There's plenty of people trying to sell it now, on the secondary market, and theyre stuck with it because nobody wants to touch it.

Im sorry but no matter what anybody says, that are high up on pvc, nobody wants to spend their hard earned money on plastic. The majority of high end, large scale, (statue) collectors dont. I even put up a thread about pvc that Igo responded to, trying to justify pvc, right before the man of steel fiasco. And he had to eat his words right after that ordeal had exploded in sideshow's face. The many have spoken over the few pvc lovers, and that exact situation proved my point.

Is PVC being used for the head sculpt to grant a better paint app? That's good. Is it being used for, say, the spear on Conan's side? That's not good, it can be done with resin or a mix of resin and metal.
One thing to keep in mind is that PVC is cheaper than polystone. No matter how many times people try to go around it, PVC is cheaper and if PVC is used I expect final price to reflect the use of a cheaper material.

That said, Paul only mentioned PVC generically, as far as we know it could be used for the small rings decorating the throne, or something very minor like that.

i agree. pvc should be used only where it makes the piece better. metal sword is a must.

There may be something on the clothing, some accessory that needs to be flexible, so PVC would be the way to go. I don't think it's going to be any great percentage of the statue.

If I recall, when you do really large pieces PVC actually starts to become the more expensive material. If you want sculpts with a ton of detail and the best paint applications, PVC is by far the best material.

The only advantage these other ones have is weight, which is completely meaningless.

Nope, PVC is still cheaper. Macaluso talked about widely back then. I know that PVC can pack a ton of detail, but same goes for resin. We're seeing statues that easily rival any Hot Toys production out there. Sorry but the material might not bother some of you, but still counts to me.

I saved this it was so interesting.

Theres a few reasons PVC statues look better than polystone.

Two main factors are PVC can be painted by machine as its strong enough to handle the process. Polystone can break or chip.

Second is every PVC statue comes out of a steel mold EXACTLY the same as the previous one so you can use copper spray masks for paint details.

Polystone comes out of a soft rubber mold and every piece has some slight variation which means the spray masks wont fit accurately

PVC is by far the superior material and process as is shown in the Yamato pieces. Polystones 'superiority' was basically a marketing gimmick created in the late 90s by companies that couldnt afford to do PVC.

Unfortunately, as soon as you get over ~12" the cost of the steel molds for PVC goes through the roof so a 1:4 scale pvc statue is even more expensive than a comparable polystone statue, unless you are making thousands of pieces in which case the cost of PVC comes down dramatically.

So, for example. A 22" statue of Goro will cost significantly more to make in PVC UNTIL you hit about 3000 pcs at which point the costs will come down. Once you hit 7000 pcs the cost will be less than it is to make it in PVC.

If you can sell 10000 pcs of a 22" pvc Goro you could probably get the price down to about 75% of what a polystone version would cost.

I read a lot of thread talking about costs, and this should cost that blah blah blah, but unless someone is actually employed in this business they dont understand how many factors contribute to what things cost.

I would love to only make PVC but that would mean price increases of 30-40% OR I can only make characters that will sell 3000+ pcs.

Neither are obviously going to work...

Interesting.

Still not sure fans would want mostly PVC statues due to the obsession with weight, but it's interesting that Jerry would prefer to make statues in PVC. My guess is that he would prefer it to eliminate the human painting element which in turn would eliminate QC issues.

I personally feel mixed media is my preferred choice in high end statues. Whichever media fits the given application best is what should be used. Metal, plastic, polystone, cloth, etc. for different elements on the piece.

I had the Yamato 1:4 scale Ritual Statue and she looked great except her bent sword. It made the whole statue look cheap to me. Also the first one I got her hair was broken. I sold her awhile ago and probably would not buy another PVC statue again.

I personally think it is fine to make pieces of a statue PVC but not the whole thing. And swords should be made out of metal.

Same here, most statues I got with PVC elements had some kind of issue - ie the original Arnold Conan PF had a crappy sword blade that bent like nothing. Same goes for Arthas' sword blade. I managed to see Yamato's statues only in pics, but the difference in painting between their resin statues and the PVC ones was obvious, not in a good way.
I'll glady see comparison pics between HT's 1:4 figures and comparable 1:4 polystone figures to judge the difference.

And that's completely the fault of the people not the material. PVC is the superior option. You got beat out by Jerry and it sounds like you're just moving the goalposts to save face.

In the end of the day you guys all fell for the weight gimmick. There's a reason that material is completely irrelevant in the figure world outside of the US.

I actually recalled Jerry mentioning that PVC is cheaper if you produce a minimal amount that was very minimal (like 500 units), never saw that post before, I have no issue admitting I was wrong.
Don't think it really changes much because if resin/polystone is cheaper at that size and number of units - then use polystone, problem solved. I have yet to see a single case of details like armor, weapons, fur being better done in PVC rather than resin. Only areas where I've seen this PVC supremacy is in head sculpts and metallic finish, and in both cases I'm seeing recently produced pieces on par with what PVC has achieved.
I.e., compare Iron Studios' Chris Evans head sculpt to Hot Toys Chris Evans head sculpt. Or XM's and Imaginarium Art's Iron Man paint app to Hot Toys Iron Man paint app. Or Gentle Giant Cap fabric/body armor to (again) Hot Toys Cap. Or Gentle Giant's Black Widow (everything) to Hot Toys Black Widow.

And sorry but, if a box comes sealed at my home and the PVC parts inside of it are already bent, then I go on the boards just to see that many other people have the exact same issue, I don't blame it on "people". I blame it on the material and how it was engineered, snd the fact that metal wouldn't have bent, easy as that.
So as you can see, this whole argument is pretty ridicolous in my eyes - if PVC is more expensive, stick to resin. If PVC is cheaper, lower the price. Having a PVC piece AND a higher price is just a fail in my eyes.
You might disagree, but people in this hobby (and all collectibles hobbies) jerk off on many different factors. Edition size, licenses, weight, materials, grail-osity, a ton of other things.
I never fell for the "weight gimmick", as you call it, since for example fiberglass is pretty awesome while being very light (see Rhino Comiquette). I just prefer a material over another, if I can have solid resin or cold cast porcelain, plus metal and/or real fur, I'll pick that over full PVC any day any time without the slightest regret.

I think most of you would be surprised by how many of your statues have PVC, I don't think it cheapens a product, it allows us to cast thousands of parts with our any deformation.

Cain had metal, pvc and resin parts, did anyone notice?

ED-209 had metal, pvc and resin parts, did anyone notice?

The Moxxi we are making for Borderlands has these difficult coat tails and hair. We are making that in dense pvc, it's the same strength and weight as resin, but if you bump it, it doesn't break.

We use PVC to make our products better and stronger, not to devalue them.

Get the old applause figures out of your mind, this is a new era of PVC and vinyl.....

PVC is not cheaper to make, it requires metal molds and increases the costs if you are making 500 figures....

I used to think PVC was the recipe for great head sculpts thanks to Blitzway, and actively campaigned for other companies to follow.

Then Sideshow released that Superman MoS PF and... well, let's just say I realized there's 'Blitzway PVC' and 'SSC PVC'.

So yeah, it all comes down to who is using what, I guess.

I asked, it's not coming painted. They only gave reference about who'll paint their proto in case you wanted to get in touch.
And trust me, 1200$ finished is still too low. You're looking at about 1000$ unpainted and only a samaritan would paint the whole thing for less than 500$. I know my painter quoted me 550$ for the paint job, he's a friend of mine and I have a ton of work planned with him, but still that's the lowest he'd go for the amount of time required.
