I'm always wondering how professionally-produced figures pull this kind of detail off.
Good examples of what I mean would be costume details on Zelda or Ganondorf, they have some really ornate, intricate flourishes. Like I can see how the regalia draped in front of her dress could be decal, but I can't see how a decal could work seamlessly for the chainlink pattern around the base of Zelda's dress for example.

I use decals in some places with success but I'm wondering if there are other techniques I'm unaware of. I'm a sculptor who also paints but I'm not really an excellent painter so I want to learn more techniques, I have a few characters coming up that will require this type of finishing details.
Anyone have any insight?
