This was a hard pass for me as well. It was tempting to have the normal head displayed with DP and the EX displayed with GP, but in the end I just couldn’t double dip on the sculpt. Congrats to everyone who ordered. I think if SS were able to use the translucent water effect that they used on The Aspen PF to mimic the iconic Uncanny X-Men 101 cover I would have bit.

These won’t go for squat at about 600.00 with shipping and eBay / pp fees the will be taking a lost. All statue companies has taken away all the profits and even the buyers most often will take a 50.00-200.00 lost when it’s time to sell. This flipping is long gone. There’s exceptions but profits would be very slim like 50.00-100.00 if lucky on rare items. Even the white storm at 150 went for pretty much retail.

And its only going to continue while they keep buying new, trying to sell off recently acquired new pieces, because they dont want it anymore. They want to sell and fund to buy another new piece that comes onto the scene for pre order. And its blowing up in everyone elses faces now on the secondary market.

While spending there stagnates, company prices keep increasing and people keep spending at retail, thinking an edition size will help retain its value. Its not. Stop spending right away, and companies will be forced to lower their prices. This is why I call them suckers. I was about to pay for this but after careful rethinking, I have to let her go... I have no regrets not getting her since the I am very much happy with my EX.
I do agree, the EX head would fit this piece better and I also understand why Sideshow did not use the EX head since it will diminish the value of the Dark Phoenix EX piece. Too expensive just to get a green body suit.
Why not the White Phoenix of the Crown with EX...that one I will definitely get without a whim.

Why not create a new green phoenix statue? The question is are they going to make a new one to fit into the new magneto and wolverine theme?

It was a variant just for the sake of variants and during spooktacular to inject abit of unexpectedness into the hobby.

I was pleasantly surprised by this and proved quite refreshing. People need to not overthink this.

However I do care that these enablers encourage these companies to keep raising their prices because they cant control their spending habits, buying up everything they see, affecting everyone elses purchasing power, and helping to price people out. While companies keep raising the prices every three to six months. It affects everyone and not just a single individual. Theyre actually harming the hobby rather than helping.

And its only going to continue while they keep buying new, trying to sell off recently acquired new pieces, because they dont want it anymore. They want to sell and fund to buy another new piece that comes onto the scene for pre order. And its blowing up in everyone elses faces now on the secondary market.

While spending there stagnates, company prices keep increasing and people keep spending at retail, thinking an edition size will help retain its value. Its not. Stop spending right away, and companies will be forced to lower their prices. This is why I call them suckers. They cant see passed the illusion of hype, and get sucked into whatever pieces & prices sideshow throws at em.

I wouldn't say naive, but parts of this feel misplaced.

Mostly every company puts in a lot of passion into this hobby, after all, there's still the designers, sculptors, painters, etc. that make all of this possible.

That said, every one of them needs to make money no matter how you cut it. F4F, HMO both do variants as an extra source of income. If you want to branch out to other licenses, you're going to need to find more ways to generate revenue. If you want better talent, you need more money.

What's funny is that all of these companies are just groups of passionate kids making big toys.

This was a nice release in my opinion and was tempted but passed. One of those statues that really sits on the fence between just another repaint and a requested piece. I think I would have been more interested if there was another pose or it came with the EX head. But if it sold out then Sideshow got this one right. Congrats to those filling out their collection!

Fair enough, you bring up valid points and I understand where you're coming from but do you really expect people to stop buying what they like? It's not gonna happen, and as long as these statues keep selling out at current prices the cost will continue to climb. Like it or not this is where the hobby is at right now, It's unfortunate but we have to deal with it if we want to continue collecting.

Great review NM! Wow the green really pops and adds a vibrant dynamic to the statue. Kinda regretting that I didn't jump on the preorder now, yet also relieved that it sold out quick. :laugh:

Truth! About 3 weeks ago, my Jean Grey PF sold for a whopping $268 on eBay. The only difference with me is that I knew I was gonna take a loss on it. $268 is more in line with what the statue is really worth.

I haven't been at this as long as a lot of you, but I do think this piece has a chance to elevate in value. This isn't a gold Batman, this is her traditional costume with a very low ES.

It'll depend on if sideshow, Prime1, Iron Studios, or some other company releases another 1/4 green Phoenix in the near future. Your theory has a much better chance of holding up if that doesn't happen. If more options become available, the fact that this has a low ES won't matter much IMO.

Remember, this is still a variant and I believe the total number of licensed 1/4 green Phoenix statues number about 1299 statues world wide (XM's 999 & sideshow's 300). How many of those actually are in North America since XM doesn't have a license to distribute their merch on our side of the pond? I have to believe some company will step in and see the chance to profit from releasing another 1/4 green Phoenix statue. It may even be sideshow themselves. That may very well be why they left money on the table because they certainly could've sold more of these.

Yep if Sideshow does a 1/4 green Phoenix in the future and it looks really nice, the value of this current variant Green Phoenix will drop like a rock. I do believe Sideshow plans on doing one eventually. They're a business and their goal is to make money. A green Phoenix is easy money as long as the sculpt and paint app are good. It will just take a while for them to do one.

There might be someone out there who would pay a premium on this statue but the truth is the market is saturated with tons of characters, lots of choices... Why spend $800 on a used statue when you can buy a new one of another character you like for $500... or better yet buy a used one on Ebay for $300 or less... Used statues are selling for almost 50% of what they were new. Statues have become like cars soon as you drive it off the lot you lose a percentage of it's value. There will always be some exceptions to the rule but this is just a variant I doubt demand will be very high for it in the 3rd party market. By the time your done with Ebay fees and Paypal fees flippers will probably end up losing money on them.

The fact is, new statues are overpriced now. They can't hold their initial value in the market, let alone sell for a profit.

Honestly, the only reason I even entertained the idea about buying this statue was to sell it. The fact that there's already the Dark Phoenix statue and this was just a variant color change instead of a new sculpt put a damper on my excitement for this piece. It's the same reason why I didn't buy both the Amazing Spider-Man PF and the Spider-Man Symbiote PF. I'll get one or the other but not both.

Yeah, variants hardly ever take off for big bucks in the aftermarket. Off the top of my head, I can't even think of one that's selling for grail like dollars nowadays. The track record really isn't there to think this variant Phoenix PF will buck the trend. I guess time will tell.

Let me add, I'm not in the hobby to make money. I do sell when I need to make room or just lose that loving feeling for a piece, but I don't buy to flip.

But I would argue that this isn't a traditional variant. This is her regular costume. Normally, this would be the initial release, and we'd see variants of it. It's kind of backwards.

I'm the exact opposite. I will not have any OG PF and a variant of it at the same time in my collection. I hate the repetitive look. It has a "knockoff" feel to me personally. Again, this is just my PIC. Obviously there are plenty of collectors that don't share it.

That’s why I’ve always made it a point to get a statue only if I love it ...if it appeals to me.

Buying a statue because it may get a higher potential value in the future is just insane. It’s maddening trying to predict that. I’d rather buy a statue for my enjoyment. If by chance I have to sell later for whatever reason, I’ve already accepted the fact I won't get all my money back.

That is a good point. Maybe as a new collector, they would be more interested in buying this if they saw it and wanted a green Phoenix in their collection. I remember when I first started, I thought everything looked cool and amazing and I wanted it all. I look at some of those old pieces I was excited for and bought back then, and no way would I get some of those pieces now. I guess you could say they haven't been in the "collecting game" long enough to know that there's good potential for a future green Phoenix to be released since there's more companies in this hobby versus "back in the day".
