That last frame even sort of looks like CK13!

All similarities to persons living or dead... yada, yada, yada...

It was kind of difficult designing a character for this, as you have to avoid the Simpsons' Comic Book Guy. I don't know what any of you guys look like, so any bald fat men with goatees, I'm sorry, really I am...

09-24-2005, 10:13 AM
It's a great design! Now, here's potential T-shirt madness. Official "Busted" shirts. No license issue there, apart from dealing with the crazed creator.

If anyone is bonkers enough to want original Busted anything, then there will definitely be no licensing issues. Shame folks only actually want things that are snaffled up in copyright though!

That's the plan (the other stuff part, not the calendar. Though the calendar would be cool. Send your demands to D Rod!) It's all fair game. And the first one was pretty general. It's just that the Namor thing happened just after it laaunched, so I rushed out something to capitalise.

Thanks Angie! So far (hopefully) they are just generic - the pictures I get in my head when I read some of the things on here, I guess. Apart from the fact that I had to avoid too many comparisons with the Simpsons' Comic Book Guy, which is clearly the first image that comes to mind when you read a fair percentage of posts! Not a bad idea though. Now, to base strips on actual members, I guess I'd actually have to know what they look like. Now who here have I actually met...?;)

I'll tell you a funny story (sort of related). I came in to work one day and someone passed me in the hall (someone who i've seen many times before but only a casual acquaintance) and said, "Good Morning Ned". Puzzled, I kept on walking and just figured they didn't remember by name. Later in the day, the same thing happened with another casual acquantance. Again puzzled, I kept on going not knowing what to think (I was thinking they knew my real name). Again, later in the day, someone I knew real well approached me and asked me if I was at the Colorado Avalanche hockey game the previous night. I said no, but I was there about a week ago. I inquired why he asked.

Anyways, what our Hockey Arena does (during timeouts and between periods) is put on the huge monitor a thing called "Stars in the audience". They will put pictures of famous actors, musicians, politicians, etc and side by side put someone's picture from the audience next to who looks "somewhat" like the star (obviously looking for a laugh). Well, you guess it. I was singled out and put on the board with the picture of Ned Flanders from the Simpsons. I thought it was quite funny. I don't have near the hair Ned does but between the glasses and the moustache I could see where someone could use my mug.

Now if it had been Zurb, they probably would have used Rodney Dangerfield.

Wow, thanks Seth! Glad you like the Peanuts Meets Marvel stuff too. No sculpts that I know of, and I can't sculpt for toffee. Or, for that matter, with toffee. It would be fun to see (especially a Linus Thor), though I don't know what the Peanuts folks would think. I live in fear of a cease-and-desist as it is! :)

Oh, and You've Been Busted can be found at some point each Sunday. Yeah, PM D Rod and tell him that!:)

The space size does complicate things, but I wanted this to be seen by as many folks as possible, so I made it fit my sig and the banner across the top of the General Discussion Forum. So the drawings do end up getting shrunk down, but it's a challenge in a fun way. I'm glad you like how it's going. As for previous strips, well 'Two Thumbs Up' resides elsewhere in this section. I also write (for the most part) the daily strip Year One, which is directly accessible in its real home through my signature, and for which an archive of sorts can also be found in this section. Australian artist Michael Parkinson (melike here at the forum) does the hard work, though I have now started to help out with the panelling and lettering. I even coloured one last week. Now is a good time to hop on-board, as we've just started our version of the Galactus Saga, which has gone down well so far.

Now, all I need is to actually find someone willing to pay me to do one of these things! Are you seriously telling me no newspaper or magazine editors or advertising agency chiefs collect statues and hang here? C'mon!;)

Mildly amusing writer with vaguely passable drawing skills seeks work: no job too small.:)

I really like seeing the differences in this strip and the previous 'sneak peek' strip right above it on the 'Busted' thread.
Nice job, Jess-

Well, the sneak peek one was a joke in itself. There won't be a final strip following that, or anything. But glad you liked them both!:)

Yeah, I knew that - What I was trying to say (unsucessfully) was that it is neat to contrast these more 'realistic' renderings to the more 'cartoony' style you usually use. You can really see that difference in the last two strips, and you can really tell that they are the same guys. It looks like you are drawing from actual models...
Besides enjoying your drawing, I love your sense of humor - Keep up the great work!

Oops, sorry! Thanks. Though I'm relieved to say I've never met real-life models for these guys... whatever their names turn out to be...

This strip hit the nail on the head for a few of the Phase 2 & 3 busts, in particular Absorbing Man and eventually the soon to be Prof. X and Havok busts are far too realistic looking. They are expertly scupted of course but I'd prefer that 'just stepped out of the comic' renditions that Randy seems to capture perfectly.

Poor old Mark Newman one of the best sculptors in the business and he's too realistic. I agree they do look out of place somewhat. I do like his Polaris bust though.

I totally agree with you about Polaris, I think she has a very pretty face and if Mark sculpts more females as good then her then we have a lot to look forward to! Is she that good looking in the comics?

His Phoenix statues are two of the best of all - in my opinion far and away the best female statues on the market - and capture the comic book look perfectly. I think he can master both styles, and probably a lot in between.

Is she that good looking in the comics? It all depended on who was drawing her, but yes, she was supposed to be quite the looker ... Neal Adams and John Byrne (in X-Men: The Hidden Years) always drew her best.

Thank you guys so much, both for comments here and in the actual Sasquatch thread I piggybacked on. Shameless, I know. I'm sure you're all tired of hearing it, but your comments and feedback have kept this going for six whole months! Fingers crossed we'll make it a year.

Jesse, doing ones like this is always a risk. As everyone knows, in the Bowen section particularly, it's a case of 'why have one thread when six identical crossover threads will do?'. No way I can read all of it, or would want to. I just have to cross my fingers and hope no-one's quipped the joke.

Kirk, I like to think that's what I'm here for. It has to be for something, at any rate.

Wolverine1 - those you don't get with cutting edge satire (cough), you reel in with a funny looking snowman.

On a sidenote, anyone else seen the Jack Frost horror films?:)

No, but I do have a cool lenticular poster from the film around here somewhere. I'm a sucker for 3-D posters...
