I wish someone would define that for me.....then again maybe I don't. I want to keep this thread upbeat. Actually, why don't we just say what "too ethnic" really means: She's not white enough. :banghead: Oh well, so much for my holiday cheer. Is it any wonder that race relations still suck when in 2005 we still have comments like this, from a pretty reasonable, intelligent good guy as I have found Tetra to be. We also havethe comments about Alba being "too ethnic" to be Sue Storm, and Alicia Masters being black? I gotta say, I feel like I just took a sucker punch to the gut when I saw Tetra's post. To me, she looks like a sexy WOMAN. She doesn't look "ethnic" to me, (BTW, are there any white ethnicities? Can you look too white?) she looks, well, sexy, fine, pretty, gorgeous, hot, whatever. Damn! My family is about to welcome our 7th mixed race child into the world (ALL of my nieces and nephews are mixed race) and this is the kind of crap they can look forward too? Oh well, Merry Fu@kin X-mas.

Also Bell's name came up for casting on WW in a thread here once and someone had said she wasn't American enough. I always thought WW should look Greek if anything.

No sweat. As I just said, there is an undertone that does go on when these questions come up, and I bite my tongue quite a bit, but sometimes, I gotta let it go. I really had never heard of her before and truly didn't even notice or think about her ethnicity, I just saw her and said "Damn."

Yeah, she's too white. I suffered minor burns on my retinas b/c I looked at her pictures with this 60 watt lamp next to my computer turned on....it was like looking at an eclipse of the sun unprotected. Arrrrrhhhh! :p

But really, I don't think any offense is meant, even considering the sources of Tetra's humor. If they were considering "The Rock" for a "Falcon" movie, I must be honest enough to say that I'd be thinking, "he's not black ("enough"). If they were considering Jack Black for a "Green Lantern" film, I'd say "too fat" (some heavy folks often think that they are the "last accepted group that it's not un-PC to rag on). If they were considering Uma Thurman for "Jubilee", I'd think "not oriental (enough)."

Maybe some might (unfortunately) mean it that way, but I don't see that as an insulting comment at all. When it comes to actresses playing characters near and dear to many of us, I think for many it's all about first looking at an actress/actor physicially and assessing how close they resemble what we're used to seeing.

On the "too ethnic" issue. What I think people mean and don't say accurately is that Wonder Woman has been traditionally depicted as having blue eyes, black hair and rather fair skin. We've grown up with these characterizations of her and other heroes and are not easily swayed when people are cast that do not look exactly as we know these characters. I admit that I too had a little "bummed" factor when I heard that Jessica Alba was going to play Sue Storm. I didn't feel this way because I don't like Jessica Alba, but I pictured her with her usual dark hair, eyes and complexion which didn't fit into mold of the Sue Storm I grew up with. I wouldn't want Brad Pitt playing Blade either for the same reason. However, Hollywood magic being what it is and Jessica Alba being what she is(that's another topic..hehe) I really dug her as Sue and think they did a great job casting her. I think people often use the term "too ethnic" as a shortcut for saying "not as they're drawn in the comics". I don't believe it's a dig about race as much as it is about messing with characterizations we know and love. Comon, I've seen people get bent out of shape here when the paint job on a statue isn't the exact shade of red or green that they're used to in the comics, and there has been an outcry of how crappy Juggernaut's helmet looks in the X3 trailer. I don't think anyone here is racist, I just think that we're all inflexible when it comes to the depictions, powers, costumes, and demeanor of the heroes we grew up reading about.
