What a beauty - this looks superb! looking at it from this angle Thor needs to be re-made - only to coincide with BAT and BRB as KK pics obviously point out.

But for what its worth: I still love the (armless!) Thor - still my favourite Bowen mini bust so far.

#161 (unsigned) arrived at my door today. As I pulled out the Styrofoam container from the outer box, BRB came tumbling out to hit the tile floor. Cape pieces went everywhere. Was I EVER so surprised to find out that there wasn't any tape holding the two Styrofoam halves together (like every other Bowen product I've bought to date). Did anyone else have missing tape or was I the only lucky one?

BZZZZZZT. Wrong. Brokeback Mountain Thor and BRB are both mini-busts. And, if you refer to the handy dandy Statue Forum Glossary, you'll see that the definition of a mini-bust is the following:

Mini-Bust - A tremendously popular form of collectible created by renowned sculptor Randy Bowen. This type of sculpture usually measures between 5” and 7” tall and depicts a character’s head, shoulders, and chest. This type of sculpture may include arms as well. Resin is the usual material used for mini-busts.

And kal-el is right. BRB is easily in the top 5 mini-busts from Bowen Designs. It's a perfect sculpt.
And I bet a Thunderstrike would look just as good. :buttrock:

#171 arrived today.

I thought at first I had an issue on the left side of Bill's helmet (Bill's left, not yours) as I had what appeared to be, for lack of a better description, a dent.

Then I looked at the art on the side of the box from the Simonson issues of Thor and realized the "gleam" in Bill's helmet from that issue had been sculpted in!

An incredible work! Well done Randy!

It is funny, isn't it, how we (us madmen collectors in general) can have such different opinions on particular pieces. I know that you, silverageguy, and jdh.goodgrief love the Thor mini-bust beyond all others. But I just can't get past the numerous aspects about it that I think could be improved.

But how can the original mini bust be improved? The Thor bust itself is beautiful and captures the character's personality perfectly - Mjolnir as the base is the icing on the cake.

No surprises: The Thor re-visit will be holding Mjolnir above his head in a half statue (yawn) action pose with a rocky base...

We need beers and a quite corner of a pub to discuss this one further Dana...

Oh man, that's a shame. Sorry to hear that. On occasion, depending upon where you get a statue and/or bust from, the seller will examine the piece before shipping it out in order to determine that it's OK. Perhaps the tape wasn't replaced when it went out.
I got mine direct from bowen and it was unsigned, so it must of come from the factory without tape.

Hey if we are aiming for correct scale, pose, anatomy etc then Loki is the odd one out. Far be it for me to say that a mixture of both types looks odd and IMO silly as Loki is a true 'Bust' while the other two are half statues. All great looking sculpts that is not the point. I think most people can figure what i'm referring to when i made my point. And this point is not a personal attack on you or anyone else Jesse. :)

I've always seen Loki pictured as being smaller than Thor in the books, also in the picture I posted, he's at an angle since I like my busts to have faces forward which makes him look even smaller ... but if I turn him to see full shoulder width he is in scale.

got this yesterday. like it, and i know it's a companion to BAT, but sheesh, these "mini" busts are getting too friggin' big for their own necessary real estate!

I started a thread about this very issue a while back. I mentioned that Bowen stated that he created mini-busts as a way to offer a low cost and low space alternative to statues. My thread asked if "mini"-busts had lost their intended purpose. Most people screamed the old "bigger is better" adage. I personally think these things are too big now.

claws181
12-31-2005, 10:34 PM
It's not that all of them are this big. Only a few come this way. I don't like the Thanos MB's size. I think it should be a lot bigger, especially after the FS. If they increase the the size on a few to give a better representation then why not?

Capt. America was given honorary founder statues, which is why he's displayed with the others ... and Henry switched from Giant-Man to Ant-Man in issue # 28 before the roster even changed, so that's why he's there.

http://www.avengersassemble.us/fullroster.html
He started with the Avengers in issue #1 as Ant-Man, though. Ant-Man is the original Avenger, even though he, Giant Man and later Goliath are all one and the same guy.

Paeans of praise, you madcap! Not peons!

And yes, I am basking in the glory and grandeur that is Beta Ray Bill right now. As I type this I am looking up at the shelf upon which he prouldly rests. The sculpt is perfect. Everything about it is sublime. The flowing cape, sculpted as if billowing in a mighty tempest...the gold belt...the helmet with the little half-circle detail on the left...his mighty-sinewed arm raising Stormbreak aloft... A sweet base reminiscent of a stylized Stormbreaker... etc. It's absolutely stunning. It's perfect. It couldn't be better.

At last. At long last. RB, it was worth the wait! Thanks for this masterpiece.
If you love it that much Dana I can only imagine what it must look like. Man I wish mine would get here. :banghead:

Avenger,

Where did you order it from? I would think that you get it quite soon.

It really is one of the very best sculpts I've ever seen, period. It looks so cool across from BAT. I've got a three-shelf setup over my desk with BRB on the left shelf, BAT on the right shelf directly across from BRB, and the third shelf is between these two, a few inches higher, which is waiting for Big Daddy Odin. Odin will be flanked by his two mightiest warriors!
Ordered him from Bowen. I rearranged my shelves to have BRB and BAT flanking Loki with the original Thor in the front. It just doesn't look right without BRB. :(

Great sculpt, not a character I like very much but the piece is great, same with Abomination, great sculpt but.
I was going over my old list of the busts from years ago, they had runs of 4,000 and some of 6,000, what happened, now most are 2,000 or 2,500
Nick Fury had a run of 4,000
Black Cat 6,000
Hawkeye, everybodies punching bag 5,000
Black Widow 5,000
Angel 6,000
Medusa 5,000
The Phantom 4,000
There are quite a few wth 2,000 and 2,500 runs, but are the days of runs of 5,000 and 6,000 over? and why?

Avenger
01-04-2006, 10:49 PM
Yeah, BRB and BAT have to be displayed together.

You're in Ohio...I would have thought that you would have received it by now. If you don't get it tomorrow, perhaps an email is in order?
I asked to have one signed. The sculpt just looked too damn good not to spend a little extra. :) I believe someone stated that the signed ones were delayed because Randy went to Hawaii before signing them. I can't begrudge the big guy a vacation.

I got # 650 from Danny yesterday!

When I first opened him, I thought that there was something amiss with the helmet, but I checked pictures posted here and found that they all have that curved line on them?!?!?

This piece is awesome and huge. Very detailed an a fine addition my Asgardian collection.

However, the base seems hollow to me. Not a big deal, just worry about tipping! I don't know if this has been mentioned elsewhere, put the shade of orange used seemed to be a bit on the light side.

This is easily in the top 5 mb's of both phases, and if you don't have one, I highly recommend it!

It was the initial purpose. I've seen the pics here (http://www.statueforum.com/showpost.php?p=438370&postcount=3) .

These busts are a great addition to the legend of Walt Simonson's Thor. I am a great fan of his storyline. I missed it way back in the eighties but was aware of its value. I only completed Simonson's run last summer (got the entire run 337-382 + the Visionnaires paperbacks + the Graphitti editions from an ebay seller at a reasonnable price).

It was logical to complete with these busts. :)
