Al was a cool guy and heck, he was Grandpa Munster! I have an Al Lewis story from quite a few years back. I remember when he opened his restaurant in Greenwich Village. I told my wife about it and one day we went down to "Grandpa's." Apparently my wife wasn't paying attention when I told her who owned the restaurant. We get there, sit down and start to eat. All of a sudden my wife's eyes widen and she starts whispering all excited to me that Grandpa Munster is in the restaurant and heading our way, OMG!!! Al must have seen the look of surprise on her face because he made a beeline right over to our table. He wound up sitting with us for a good 10 minutes and chatted up my better half the whole time. She was thrilled and profused her love for Grandpa and the Munsters. I would have settled for a couple of minutes with Marilyn while Al was ignoring me for the wife. I've got pictures of the two of them together somewhere. After he got up and continued on his rounds I grilled my wife on her apparent total and complete surprise at running into Grandpa at, uh, "Grandpa's." I think her excuse was that she doesn't pay too much attention to anything I say. :) Celebrity owner notwithstanding, the restaurant, which served Italian food, was quite good and we paid many visits to it during the time when it was in business. Al wasn't always there but when he was you could count on him stopping by your table at some point during the evening. RIP Al.

I'd been to Granpa's restaurant a few time, myself, Zurb...back when I lived in Astoria near your old neighborhood. Al was a great guy and always was there to greet us at the door. After a time his nephew started working the place and, somehow, got into it with a buddy of mine when a group of us from Columbia went down there for pasta. Almost broke out into a fight but, wouldn't you know it, Al himself came over to break the two of them up.

Was always a real treat seeing him and he was always a kind, friendly, class A act when I saw him.

RIP, Al. Loved the Munsters as a kid, too. :(

I always loved the munsters as a kid and I still will watch it if I stumble across it while channel surfing. Grandpa totally made the show. He apparently had a good run, can't complain about living for 95 years. He will be missed. RIP Grandpa!

Used to watch the Munsters every summer as a kid...especially the marathons on good ole Channel 11.
For a while there I thought he was gonna live forever...and on TV he will. :buttrock:

Here's Grandpa celebrating the opening of his restaurant in NYC.

I don't know anything about the food his restaurant served, but to me he was a great character actor. He will be sorely missed!

Well, he had a long and fruitful life! Always liked his "F the FCC" stance!

Munsters are a classic! Really holds up well with the passage of time!

Sad to see him go...RIP!

I loved Channel 11 as a kid. Chiller Theatre and Abbott & Costello movies!! And, of course, Munster Marathons!

It's sad to see Grandpa gone. Like everyone said 95 years is a good run but he is one of those timeless people that you never want to see go. RIP Al
