I've got my tickets for the upcoming NYC Comic Con and in looking over the guest list, there are quite a few artists whose work I really like. I've never commisioned anyone for artwork and had a few questions.
1) What supplies do I need to bring for the artist? Type of paper, size, do I need to bring pens/pencils?
2) What's the best thing to carry the finished work in? Sketchbook, folder, poster-tube?
3) I'm assuming that due to the size you can only request sketches or can it be a little more detailed?
4) Do you negotiate a price or is it setup as a flat fee?
As I said, it would be my first time getting anything besides an autograpgh, so I'd rather not look like a complete idiot when I head in there.
Thanks.

Firstly, it's a Comic Book convention, so we all look like idiots in there
In terms of your questions, there are no set rules at all. Everything depends on the artist. Some will only do little freebie head sketches, and others will charge for whatever it is that you want. You certainly won't need to bring any pens/pencils/markers as any artist who is going to do anything will have that with him/her. Artists usually have bristol boards or something to draw on, but if there is anything you want to use (sketchbook, a certain size of paper/bristol boards to keep your collection uniform...) then you obviously need to bring your own stuff.
It all comes down to what you want.

Yeah Raven like Galactus said you wont really need to bring anything, unless you are starting a sketch book.As for prices it depends on the artist.A nice range that I have dealt with from getting commissions done at shows would be from $20-$150.One thing you would really need that would help out the artist is a refrence pic of the character you want.If its not a big Mainstream charcter (Wolverine,Spidermanb,Captain America) Some artist might not know what they look like so just bring a nice refrence pic and you would be on your way to yet another Nasty money stealing Hobby.
