Aphrodite IX Artist's Proof Edition Statue
Magdalena Artist's Proof Edition Statue
We thought that you'd be interested in getting a little insight into the licensor-licensee approval process, at least the way we do it here at The CS Moore Studio. Here are some photos of the thumbnail sculptures Clayburn worked up for the upcoming all-new Magdalena sculpture and the upcoming Aphrodite IX Artist Proof Edition sculpture. These are only about 4 inches tall, but they convey the idea to the good folks at Top Cow. Next, Clayburn will rough out the sculpture of Magdalena full size and get approval on the basic look, then the sculpting goes full tilt and much of the figure will be almost complete before the next round of approvals.
More information coming soon!

Does anyone know if Clayburn Moore has considered modifying the Aphrodite IX figure itself?

Guys, I'm under the impression from the initial post that the prelims to Top Cow are 4."
I'm sure these are going to be full-size pieces...
I hope Clay is sculpting Mags.

They seem even simpler than the Bowen Sentinels.
The original looked a lot better. Hope these are tweaked before production.

It does say that after the thumbnail sculptures are submitted, Clay will then rough out the Magdalena to full size, so it looks like D'ohboy is right and these are simply preliminary minis. If I remember correctly, I think it had been confirmed in another post that Clay would be sculpting Magdalena himself.

These are just proto-types scaled in minis to give Top Cow an idea of the concept. I have no doubt these will be in the same scale when complete. I think sculptors often use this process when selling an idea to the owners of the licence.

Now that I re-read the original post and I realize they will be both FS then then I am going to sell my AIX and wait for the new one...
so they're changing the base on AXI?

I'm just saying the pose, skirt, leather holster, and other minor things might be tweaked a bit unless they recast her from the original.
It wouldn't be a bad thing, but it would certainly help justify buying another one to those who have the original. :rolleyes2

Yeah guys those are just mockups you see. Clay's studio is full of old mockups. They will be completely redone FS for production. And the AIX figure won't change in any noticeable fashion, just the base will be different. It was done from a better casting that the original, but it will be very hard to notice the difference.

Why not make a different sculpt cb. I think this will have an effect on the value of the original piece.

Since he's doing the concept pieces, he should really do a different pose for AIX instead of ticking off the people who bought the original. Plus two versions mean two sales (not to mention a tidy little jump in value for the original).

If they end up as good as Kabuki, I'll get them both.

Yay... a different base. :banghead: Maybe Moore Studios will offer a rebate to us folks who paid a premium for the original on the statue secondary mkt.
Or at least a discount on the new one! :buttrock:

Strange calling these statues "artist proofs" when they are going to be original, new sculpts.

Right on, Bulls! Thing is though, re-casting is probably to make a quick buck. Doing a new sculpt would take too long.
Anyway.. attached are a few alternatives.
I like the last one on the right the best.

If AIX is going to essentially be the same sculpt, why is he sculpting a new one to show as a prototype? Why not just recast? If he is resculpting, why not do a different pose? This makes absolutely no sense unless they have no confidence in doing anything other than a pose that has already been successful, or are they just trying to p*ss off the collectors who already have the original one and paid a bucketload for it. The whole thing seems like a money grab.

There is no new sculpt. That mock up is a four inch sketch that was done in minutes. It says that pretty clearly in the text.
Also my understanding is that the A.P. edition size is only going to be around 300. I don't know if that assuages your after market value concerns. Hopefully it does.

If the new Magdelena is even half as good as the first, it'll be a beauty.
