If you want to see a truly unique voice in the statue field check out Gabe Perna's Gallery (http://www.toiletface.homestead.com/gallery.html).

I have only recently discovered other sculptors outside of those that have worked for Bowen Designs. Gabe Perna has the most distinct style I have ever seen.

Just to give you a taste:

This is actually one of his more "traditional" pieces I would say.

Though using traditional and Gabe Perna in the same sentence just seems wrong. :p

I hope he can get his Nightcrawler statue made some day. I think it would be a truly mind-boggling cool piece for any collection.

Without a doubt, I am a huge fan of Gabe Perna sculpts! I love his unique style and powerful attitudes built into the pieces. I've painted a few and many more than I need to build and paint (if only there were more time in a day).

Danno,

I just checked out your site. Awesome paint jobs! I would love to get some of Gabe's work finished and pre-painted some day. I think I could put a kit together, but I know I could never paint it.

Do you know if it is expensive to hire someone to paint a piece? I am very new to this hobby, at least the kit side.

Best,

Crom

Hi Crom,

Thank you very much for your very kind comments.

With regards to painting, I really think more people should give it a try. You would be surprised at how well you can do...and with publications like Kitbuilders Magazine, Amazing Figure Modeler, and Modelers Resource...many tips and techniques can be picked up to do just about anything. Time is always the worst enemy with building and painting...but it is something very fun and the feeling of accomplishment after something is done and knowing that you yourself hand a hand in making it look the way it does speaks millions.

As for cost to build up kits...it really depends on the kit and who is doing it. The more complex the assembly and more complicated the paint scheme...the more it will cost to paint (in most cases, the cost of a custom build/paint will cost more than the kit itself).

The nice thing about garage kits is that they are limited....I mean REALLY limited. Many of them have production runs of less than 50 pieces worldwide. Then build and paint....and you have a one of a kind piece that maybe only a handfull of other people own.

You may want to subscribe to a model magazine to get a feel for the pieces available (when they are available) and review the step by step how to paint articles. The next issue of Kitbuilders is focused on Comic book characters...here's a sneak peek at the cover:

GABE PERNA rocks as a sculptor and a friend. I have some of his pieces and am painting one right now. The pictures do not do justice there is so much detail in his work you have to see it in person to catch it all.

and Danno is one of the best painters ever! period he does things that make pieces sing!

I appreciate the info. I probably don't need another expensive hobby, but when has that ever stopped me before? :)

I will have to see about picking up that magazine. I've never had a very steady hand, but now I have some room in my condo to set up a little work area.

Thanks!

From what I have seen of Perna's work he revels in a distorted, horrific, exaggerated anatomy with a sense fo true horror.

So, as you can see, he has already worked on NBR. :p

No. If I understand it correctly there is a limit to how many they can produce before it needs to be a licensed product. I'm not sure what the official number is.

Everything I have seen of Gabe Perna's is fanatastic! Oops, is that butt-kissing?

I am not that big a fan of Venom (sorry CK in Sd  ) But I think the Consumption piece is amazing. I like the fact that it shows a different perspective on the character, on ethat is often left out. The fact that Eddie Brock is not too keen on the symbiote suit anymore really comes out in this piece.

Meltdown Wolverine is just slick. Thanos, love that guantlet base. Aquaman, lame character turned into wicked cool character through statue. Lobo - Ripped Badass! Strucker, pure sinister.

And Nightcrawler, well... Let's just say if this is ever made it will be a good day indeed.

Ok, that was probably butt-kissing. Somebody pass the chap stick.

Colossus Sketch by Gabe Perna (http://www.toiletface.com//files/Colossus.jpg)

It looks like Colossus is coming back in the pages of Astonishing X-Men. Now would be a great time for a new Colossus statue. It would make for a great contrast between the Bowen version and yours. Classic style next to Deranged style.

To quote Ben Stiller from Starsky & Hutch - "Do it! Do it!"

Lunchmin
08-26-2004, 11:50 AM
uh-oh... they've found the skethes!
i gotta tell ya- alot of people have been after me to do a sculpt based on that colossus. someday i gotta get to it.
granted, i wouldn't do it exactly like the sketch- i don't think it would translate too well into 3-d... i'd have to go a bit more real with it.
i have a tendency to throw convention and reason out the window when i sketch. it's my little freedom of expression. the more ridiculous the better, i say.
still- i think it would make for a groovy piece. transforming, yanking off the shirt, with a big@ss barbell on the floor next to him.
we shall see!
thanks for the props, crom!

No problem Gabe! Love your style, completely different, which is always needed.

I heard that your Hulk bust was being considered by Dynamic Forces at one point. Any moevment on that? I think it is one of the best Hulks I have ever seen, and I really enjoy the way the bust is incorporated into the "story" of the piece.

Keep up the insanity. AND POST MORE PICTURES! :thumbs2:

ahh, yes. the trials and tribulations of the hulk...
glad you like that piece. it was a private commission, so as a result... i no longer have it.
BUT- when it was being considered by DF, i had a junk mold of the bust made (so i've got just 2 copies), so that i could make the changes they wanted. which i did... i changed the head, did some other stuff, got ready to make a new base for it, then never heard back from them... who knows what happened.
anyhoo- i'll try and dig something up to post. most of it is all secret like, or too rough yet to show, but i'll find something.
thanks again, my man!

Gabe Perna's work is the best "new" talent I've seen in a long time.

If I had super-powers, I would be drawing sketches and sculpting statues like Mr. Perna.

That's exactly the type of art that I would like to own. Now only if Gabe can get his work mass produced, because I can't build up a kit to save my life. :(

Okay, it looks like Gabe has come out of his emotional cave and delivered some true insanity. :eplus2:

These were posted over on the Shifflett's board. Below is Gabe's description of Salesmin Sculpt (http://www.toiletface.com/salesminprog.jpg)

it certainly has been a bit since i posted something, so i figured
what the heck. here's one of what seems like countless pieces that
haven't been touched in some time...
this is the salesmin and his brother , reginald (his hand).
reginald is the brains of the operation, but he needs his brother to get around.
the salesmin knows how to open windows to places. it's kinda like the two
of them are peeking in from somewhere, now.
they open and come through these windows, only to steal things like
tears and broken dreams. upon their return- they peddle their goods on
the blackest of markets. reginald has a mean streak at least a yardstick wide
and his brother grins alot, but he's kinda awful, too.

I think this might be my favorite piece I have seen from Gabe. When I saw this piece I so wished Marvel would let Gabe do an X-Men Unleashed type of line. Mini-busts and statues that don't fit the norm, but are completely distinct. I really think this is an avenue Marvel (and DC) should explore. Bowen already does the "classic" version of Marvel to a "T". DC has the normal line as well. I think this could open up a whole new market of collectors.

Maybe Dynamic Forces or Diamond will realize the futility of trying to compete with Bowen for the same market style and look into the unique style of a sculptor like Perna.

Anyway, I give you Nightcrawler by Gabe Perna (http://www.toiletface.com/files/nightcrawler2.jpg).

Crom

Hell Yeah! This is one of the first pieces of art in general which I felt played up just how alien Nightcrawler really looks. The arms and the hands really make him stand out amongst the mutants when you consider most of them just look like regular superheroes.

I would love to see Gabe tackle Beast. Any of the more monstrous Marvel characters would be something wicked in his style. For instance Dragon Man, can you just imagine Gabe working on those massive wings? His Devilman wings give me nightmwares, I love them. Combine the massiveness (is that a word?) of Dragon Man with those wings and you have a delicious monstrosity.

Gabe does some of the best sculpting as of late, i just finnished painting the mad god bust for a customer with modifications to the guantlet, he also has a LOBO that is to die for, you would not believe all the detail that is packen in it. I have to say if you can grab one of his pieces, he is working on a Dr. Jeckle & Mr. Hyde along with casy love and it's very demented and cool.
i would have to say that in the last year 30 out 100 paintups i have been requested to do is of his work and im more than happy to sling the paint :)

I like DC, but I am a Marvel fan. But I really don't like Lobo. I think he is one of the lamest characters ever created, and I think he was designed simply to cash in on the Wolverine craze of the Eighties. That being said, I think this is the coolest Lobo I have ever seen. This guy is ripped andthat gun is nuts.

Between Gabe and Danno, this is the best the Main Man has ever looked in my opinion.

I was a pre paint only guy lots of Bowen and Df stuff but then I saw the Koma Hulk and that was it, then the Formation Designs Batman, Gabes Hulk and on and on... I would say 2/3 rds of my collection are kits. It is so satisfying to build it just perfect no bits that are under par, no dodgy glue overspills etc...

I would very, very rarely buy a pre-paint now because where's the fun, but when I started guy's like Danno offered support and advise that I may never have thought of so the network is very good and as Danno said you get very limited addition kit's 25-50 total and that’s cool.

GABES!!! YOU ROCK!!!
Ive been visiting this site no more than a year... i dont sculp (i may give it a go one day), i dont paint.. i sometimes (try to) draw.. etc.. and the main reason i come on here is to see all the great sculpures and hopefully find cool animated sculps. Im really into Bruce timm art and animated beauties eg catwoman Harley batgirl..etc...
And collect alot of the DC stuff.. which pales in comparison to your stuff..

anyways my point is that outta all of the stuff ive seen here (i guess i havent seen every post), and there are alot of really talented sculpers, id have to say your stuff really stands out most - just checked out your awesome site. The distinct style... the detail is amazing... you could sculp anything..
I have to say im more into the simple animated style of sculps and for that reason love the Prince Lotor u did ;)

I dont know how much time u take to do your sculpures.. but jeez.. id love a talented sculpure like yourself to oneday get a documentary on how to make a sculp from start to finish.. ie. the whole process.. wouldnt that be amazing..well it would for peeps like me... just seeing how one gets so much detail in their sculps.. how it all started.. how long it really takes..

anyways, just thanking you Gabe for sharing your stuff on your site and i just felt like giving credit where its due.. amazing stuff..
also big thanks to CROM for the original post.. thats why i love this site.. really opens the possibility of stumbling into some truely amazing sculps and talent out there.

cheers,
steve

Gabe is the king of detail. Truelly awesome stuff.

I'd love to see his take on a Green Goblin or a Deathstroke.

typically reviving old threads is kinda well old stuff, but with Gabe, nope that is not that case I can just look at the pieces of his I own for hours.
