¼ Scale Doctor Doom – Sideshow

Doctor Doom – Sideshow
Sculpted by Pablo Viggiano
Control/Art Direction: Martin Canale
Fabrication: Gidget Earle

Introduction: This is the fifth Premium Format piece from Sideshows now successful Marvel licence following on from Logan, Elektra, Green Goblin and Punisher. Premium format is not for everyone but it is hard to deny the sheer quality of these pieces. They have taken comic book collectibles onto another level alongside movie icons and justifiably so. Sideshow has successfully mixed the ¼ scale line between fully sculpted Marquette’s, which include Drake, Thing, Ironman, and Wolverine.

<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e130/rjbreslin/doom3.jpg" border="0" alt="Image hosting by Photobucket"></a>

Doom Sculpt: The sculpting on this piece is nothing short of magnificent. 1/4 scale lends itself nicely to detailing the intricate endo-skeleton body of Doom and to his awe-inspiring throne. The armour sculpt is cast in polystone and painted silver to achieve the metal affect. The detailing around the gauntlet and mask is superb right down to the minuet rivets. The mask is not based on the classic marvel look but this does not diminish from the overall look.

<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e130/rjbreslin/doom2.jpg" border="0" alt="Image hosting by Photobucket"></a>

Throne Sculpt: This has to be one of the most detailed sculpt to be released by any Marvel licensee. The four posts and back are painted in a bronze colour and provide beautiful detailing. In a way it’s a pity that there is so much detail on the piece and it makes for a difficult decision as to what way to display it. I know its been mentioned that a turntable tray would provide the optimum display but not everyone will have both the space and money to provide this piece with its rightful display. A simple pedestal which one can walk around might be an easier solution.

<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e130/rjbreslin/doom4.jpg" border="0" alt="Image hosting by Photobucket"></a>

Fabric and Leather: The fabric to Dooms under cloak and over cloak is of good quality and it should be relatively easy to maintain. The detail is so fine on this piece and there is actually a sculpted 9mm broom handle Mauser in his holster. The belt can also be adjusted with the metal buckle. What’s more amazing is the Doom sculpt is actually fully sculpted beneath the clock. It is this level of detail which marks this out as one of the truly great pieces of comic-book art.

<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e130/rjbreslin/doom1.jpg" border="0" alt="Image hosting by Photobucket"></a>

Exclusive: The exclusive Doom, which is offered solely through Sideshow, is identical to the regular edition except for the pedestal and chalice. Some of Sideshows exclusives have been poor but this is one of the better ones and really sets off the display.

Conclusion: This is without doubt one of the finest collectibles ever released under any licence. The sheer size, detailing and quality of sculpt and fabrication makes this piece a highly collectable piece. Pablo and Martin have once again produced a masterpiece. I find no reason other than display-ability to subtract any points from this piece. I would give this 10 out of 10.

Interesting Sites.

Ghost, you can pretty much position anyway you want. Bulls didn't take the time to fix his. :)
Anyway, nice review, Bulls! This is by far the best PF 1/4 piece released yet.

I've noticed the base for the photo shoot is quite nice. You have a display case for it, Bullseye? Mine still in the box and yet to see the light cause I can't decide on how to display it yet. It should be a stand alone on himself cause he's just too fantastic!

Yup, this statue is awesome. It goes beyond a "comic collectible" and into the realm of work of art. It's a classy piece and anyone that sees it is indeed in awe of it.

As someone mentioned before, even people that think collecting comics statues is silly have taken extra notice of this piece in my place. It is THAT powerful.

I agree with Bulls. Pictures do not show how impressive this thing is in person. And there have been many, many pictures taken.

A must own without a question for any Marvel or comics fan.

Damn you guys. I was really trying my best to stay away from SS's PF Marvel line and just stick with the VS. pieces but you're all really selling me on this. Even though I'm not the biggest Doom fan I always thought this statue looked amazing and now I'm wrestling with the idea of getting one. These boards are becoming increasingly dangerous to my financial well being.

Sigh . . . it wouldn't be the first time you all have talked me into getting something I thought I could live without. Must . . . resist . . . the . . . urge. :banghead:

I hear you, hellboy. I'm not a Doom fan and resisted from pre-ordering the exclusive BUT EVERYBODY in here is raving how awesome he is and I picked up the exclusive so I wouldn't regret it later. It's on its way and I HOPE I don't like it so I can sell it later but knowing me, I never do that and just keep everything.

Financial well-being, you say??? Those were my pre-statue days before Danny...before the Empire. Now, I'm a hairline just over broke. :sly2:

I got the exclusive version from SS to flip but I must admit after I took it out the box it was love at first site.
This has to be one of the best if not THE best pieces i`ve ever seen.
The pictures although great don`t do it justice this will stay in my collection great job sideshow and all who had a part in this masterpiece.

Thanks, Hellboy. I received it the other day and while it looks great, I should have stuck with my gut instinct and passed on it. Doom just isn't a character I like all that much. At best, I'll keep it for a while but as space becomes more of an issue, I see myself selling it down the line. Maybe I'll feel differently when I set up my display room and see him amongst the others but all in all, I wasn't that impressed. Okay, let the insults fly! I think I'm the first person to not be "jumping for joy" for this piece. :confused2

Everyone's entitled to their opinion yoda. It will look out of place if you don't have any other 1/4 scale pieces.

Not really comfortable with the lingo but by 1/4 scale I have these that I think qualify: SS Green Goblin, Vader, Ben, XMen/Sentinel, and now Doom. Plus a lot of the SW Attakus (are those considered 1/4 too?). I do like the chalice with the magnet accessory. Maybe I'll just keep that.

Actually the SW Attakus statues are 1/5 scale while the X-Men VS. Sentinel piece is probably somewhere around 1/9 or 1/10 scale. :)
