IYO, what do you think is the best rading card set and chase cards?
I have two.
the First Marvel Masterpieces set is stunning. Every single card is beautiful and a must-have. This is a set that every Marvel fan and NS trading card fan should own.
The second set would be Star Wars Finest. Ten of the finest artist in the industry covering all the characters in the SW universe. All in Chromuim as well
For chase cards, I like the Spectra etch ones like in Star wars Glaxy and Saga of the dark Knight, but the ultimate chase card must be the one that was featured in Julie and Boris' Marvel Masterpieces where you actually won one of the paintings that they drew for the series(I think dave Dorman also did this for the Ultraverse masterseries

What year was the first Marvel Masterpieces set? And as far as the best inserts...I really like the Fleer Marvel '94 Powerblast cards. I think they are really great looking and there were only 18 of them in the set. An achievable goal unlike later sets.

There are too many cards sets to choice just a favorite. Some of my favorite card sets are from Fleer Ultra X-Men and Marvel Masterpieces. :D

never did like the fleer flair cards. they were just existing art touched up with computers.
I liked the fatal attractions chase set from the first fleer x-men a lot though

Are boxes of Marvel Masterworks cards actually worth anything? I think we have a few shrink wrapped boxes left at my shop (somewhere)

I like the more traditional art cards as well. I don't know, I think I like the fleer set so much because it was the first set I started collecting from Marvel and it's also the first set that I actually completed chase cards and all. That always makes you more fond of a set! :)

if you want a great card set just for the art(and don't care what's on the back) a fantastic set is the creator's master series
featuring artwork not seen before by brom, dave dorman, dave McKean, Julie Bell and Brian Stelfreeze, this feature some of the best art!
The backs of the cards make up a picture.
It was released along with a CD-rom game that you could buy seperately. Great embossed cards chase cards as well, along with a special one with simon bisley

A friend of mine found the Spiderman card and ended up selling his painting to a local Comic store in St Louis. He couldn't afford the taxes he had to pay on winning the painting. I think it was valued in the $30,000 range for which he had to pay taxes on that.

I love Marvel's First Issue Covers. Some obscure stuff in that one, and it looks good on display. No chases that I know of.
Vertigo's Sandman set. Oversized cards, foil-edged Endless set, and a beautiful Morpheus hologram.
Universal Monsters set. Especially with Mike Mignola doing the art for the Bride of Frankenstein cards.

Marvel Masterpieces Series 1 was great but the 1996 Series by Vallejo and Bell was just over the top - each card was truly a work of art. I love that set!
It's hard to choose my favorite because most of the time I factor in how long or how much work it took me to finish a particular set. For example, the SW Finest Refractor Set was sooo hard to complete that it holds a special spot in my collection even though the cards (although nice) aren't the best. Star Wars Chrome Archives and Star Wars 3Di were other beautiful sets....but it's hard to choose.....I love all my babies. :)

I felt the Conan Chromium sets where nice, and the Holochrome set was beautiful. Trying to collect the Holochrome/Refractor set was difficult back then. Now though it seems like one can purchase the Holochrome set at a decent price if one surfs on eBay.
Now the chase card I will admit I am biased I am thrilled with the Intrepid PITT Mega Motion chase card. This motion card was thick, and it had allot of animation when one tilted it the face of PITT would go from calm to a large red eyed growl. There was only 600 cases produced, and each box was individually numbered. The odds of pulling the redemption were 1:75 packs, and it had to be mailed away. The problem in mailing it away was the U.S.A. branch closed down when the company was going out of business so remaining redemptions had to be mailed to Australia. It was hard to get these redeemed, and there is still allot of boxes and cases out on the market. The Mega Motion card can be found on eBay or searching the web and the prices vary depending on if the person knows how hard it was to redeem it.

The best chase cards for me is a no brainer. Gotta be the sketch cards out of the Star Wars Heritage line. Okay I know this isnt a traditional series of chase cards but where else are you going to get original hand drawn star wars art by some of the greatest artists out there. My favorite in my collection is a Ray Lago Yoda sketch.

In My Opinion The Marvel Masterpiece Set By Boris And Julie Bell Were One Of The Best I Have Seen. The Next Set Of Cards That Blew Me Away Were The Soul Calibur Cards By Namco. The 3-d Holo Cards Are Unbelieveable

Fleer Ultra X-Men 94. Love from the very first pack.
I also loved the Flair sets, and the Masterpieces that the Hildebrandts did. Oh and Masterpieces '93.
