View Full Version : Studio Oxmox T-Rex Diorama Review

Something a little different here, and one for the dino fans amongst you:
The T-Rex diorama (Ltd Edition of 950) is produced by Studio Oxmox, run by Marc and Gaby Klinnert from their base in Australia, and who specialize in the production of high quality lifesize promotional statues for movie and games companies. (Some of you may have seen the full size Halo 2 Master Chief statue in stores).
The T-Rex is currently the only dino they produce in less than full 1:1 scale - though it's still enormous! - more on that later -- and the dinosaur range also includes 2 versions of Deinonychus (the beast that Jurassic Park's Velociraptor was based on) and a full size T-Rex head that will take up a whole wall.
The first thing to note about this diorama is the size: at 1:10 scale it comes in at a full 4-feet long! The size alone gives it instant 'wow' factor. I suspect it also gave the poor Fedex guy a hernia as he struggled up the steps with it. The box for this item is BIG - it even makes WETA's Kong vs V-Rex box look puny!
The diorama comes pre-painted and ready to assemble in 5 separate pieces, the T-Rex himself needing to have his tail fixed by locating in on two screws on the body. I was a little concerned that this would look a little obvious when in place but in fact the join is done really well and is invisible from most angles.

The one point that I have to stress about the piece is that the sculpt is just sensational. The Rex himself is recognizable as the bad boy of Jurassic Park and this dynamic pose, which depicts the creature fighting off two Deinonychus scavengers from their Parasaurolophus meal is visual dynamite. It really looks like a frozen moment from pre-history. (It can of course be posed without the smaller dinosaurs, which some may prefer to do.)
http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/1276/dscf00523pj.jpg
Paint app is very nice, with a great colour scheme for the Rex. The head is predominantly red, indicating that his snout has been buried in the innards of the Parasaurolophus. The finish is satiny-matt, perfectly suiting the texture of the dinosaur's skin. Some owners might prefer to add a little gloss lacquer to the eyes to bring out the shine a little more. Same perhaps for the blood and guts.
http://img319.imageshack.us/img319/4661/dscf00447rb.jpg
And that brings me to the only real negative of this museum-quality piece: this isn't one for dinosaur-loving youngsters to enjoy -- it's just a bit too gory and visceral for that. This is T-Rex as he was, not as some lovable Barney character. Parents with impressionable kids beware.
http://img319.imageshack.us/img319/4274/dscf00560pw.jpg
Having said that, the visual impact of the diorama can't be understated - it really does dominate a collection space in the way few other statues can. Highly recommended for all dinosaur, Jurassic Park and T-Rex fans!
Studio Oxmox can be contacted through their website www.studiooxmox.com (where there are more pictures of the diorama).

That is a fantastic piece, you are right if I walked into a room full of sculptures I feel my eyes would gravitate towards this one simply based on the violence. Also their website has some amazing sculptures it is worth taking a look.
The pictures you have taken are great they show a lot of detail!

Lol one of my last messages to Gaby I asked for some clearer pics how the red works out on the face of the rex Ill let her know not to bother, I get the picture ;)
Great shot guys, I know marc finishes all these pieces himself it might be possible he could tone down the red if someone would prefer that, just guessing though but.... it looks good to me :)
ps I got quoted 290 AUD for shipping to NL, shame they dont keep these in stock in Germany but total is still a very affordable price I think.

Very cool piece, I saw it over at the Clubhouse.
Great price.
I would probably have mine re-painted to look more like the JP dinos color schemes.
Still, very cool!

Great pics P1X4R, I can see that your Rex has less blood on his jaws, mine really looks like he's been having a good wallow in dino guts lol!
To be honest, given the choice, I would have probably have opted for less red too, I didn't realise that it would be quite so bloody based on the web images.
Of course, the piece CAN be customised, as Marc personally supervises the finishing.
And yes, Oxmox are great to deal with - you get real personal attention from them. I only wish I had a place to put their awesome Deinonychus 1:1 piece. Maybe soon... ;)

Hmm wait now I am confusing myself I thought it had an orange pattern on the face the big rex, but now I am thinking that was perhaps only blood Ill check their site for reference.

leks, my digital camera is giving off too much red in my pics. it's not as red in person.
Ok got it yeh, red did look too vibrant, and I can still see a little of the orange coming through on the head, I like the scheme you got :)

VERY nice pics, P1X! :)
Like you know, I almost ordered this one. Talked with Gaby many times about it. Looks nice. Not sure about the paint job, though, but then If I get this pice, I would repaint it(and re do some parts, principally the head) to make it looking like the JP T-Rex.

Of course Horizon brought out some vinyl kits of the JP dinos based on the Stan Winston molds, but I didn't care much for the T-Rex pose; Oxmox's version is much better.
The Horizon 'raptor was pretty good though - I got hold of some good reference pics of the colour schemes applied to the JP2:Lost World versions (they changed colour every movie) and had mine painted the same way -- it came out pretty good I think.

Wow that is stunning. Knocks my puny dino sculpts out of the park! I have a few tiddlers from a company called The Favorite Collection (Japanese).
Might have to think hard about getting this.
I *think* it's the same studio that made the American Mcgee's Alice cat I have here.
It's produced(?) / distributed by the german Muckle Mannequins, and seeing they also sell big-scaled glass fiber dinos, is it from the same range?
I found my Alice cat, while impressive because of the size, not very well modelled and painted. Wondering if their other statues are better.
Is Muckle Mannequin licensing and producing those themselves, importing, or..?

So is Muckle Mannequins the only makers of these? Or is it licensed to other companies outside europe? Quite surprising that you can only find them in europe.
I'd really like to find Alice btw. It's not produced anymore, saw it once on ebay but it was like 3000eur, and weirdly the few pieces I've seen pics from were all missing the knife(?)

are the paints on the oxmox pieces very good?

I have one of these myself, the paint is pretty good (not the best, but great for the price).
Pros - The size size and sculpt is what really this piece is about. Good price point too
Cons - The gap between the tail piece and body is still noticeable (on mine), not as heavy as i expected (due to being resin)
