View Full Version : Zidane sending off

It has been alleged by the French coach that the fourth offical seen the incident on his tv monitor and informed the referree. It this is the case Zidane should never have been sent off. Neither the ref or his linesmen seen the incident.
FIFA are stating that the fourth offical saw the incident first hand. This thing could roll on and on.
(Just to clarify i believe that Zidane should have been sent off no doubt. But if the officals are using video evidence during a game to make decisions when it is not part of the rules then this is completly wrong.
If they did use the video evidence to punish Zidane it does show how quickly this tool could be used to help referrees in the future :D ).

It was an incredibly stupid move on the part of Zidane.

I agree. I was probably the most experianced player on the pitch. Even if the Italian called his mother a name he should never have done what he did. He let himself, his teamates and his nation down at the very moment of head butting the player.
And whats a great pity, he will always be remembered for it in much the same way as the English remember Maradona for the Hand of God goal, but forget about his wondergoal in the same game.
Your always remembered for your last action.
I thought something like this would happen. FIFA may have introduced video evidence through the back door. My view is that, for incidents like that, play should continue and if the ref hears that a player has perpetrated an assault, he should send him off at the next break in play. I would love video evidence to be used after games to impose massive fines and bans on clear divers. I also think it would benefit the game if erroneous decisions could be reversed within five minutes by a panel considering video: sent off players returned from a 'sin bin' if wrongly carded; penalties disallowed if incorrectly given. Lastly, I think goalline disputes, which are comparatiely rare, could be decided within one minute by video without delaying the game unduly.

According to Sky sports, the fourth official does not have access to a monitor. A fifth official does, but he is not allowed to communicate with the others.

I have no doubt video evidence was employed by FIFA (as Jess stated through the back door). If it were an offical tool then fine but since it is not then it should not be used.

Yeah - it took too long to reach the decision. (Not sure how they only added one minute of injury time...)
Can you imagine the referee's surprise when he went over to the touchline: 'Zidane did WHAT??!!?'

:D And Sepp Blatter his boss. Ooohh that took some nerve.
The best thing is, this is the first World Cup where the player of the tournament is named after the final - most years, I think there's a chance Zidane would already have won the award. Last time around, they decided player of the tournament at half-time of the final. Imagine if they'd done that!

I was schocked when I saw what Zidane did and he should have been sent off. What the hell could he have been thinking? But, per the rules if an official didn't actually see it then he should not have been carded. According to the announcers on the broadcast I was watching, they showed it inside the stadium to the fans so I wouldn't be surprised if that's when the on field official who claims to have seen it, saw it.

Zizou really put his weight behind that hit, can't accuse the Italian of diving, although the shock factor probably helped him to the ground. One of World Cup history's most Bizarre moments, possibly #1 all time considering it was in the final. Makes Beckham's petulance look like nothing. Was by far the most exciting thing to happen in the game.
FIFA have some work to do to clean up the event for next time. Hmm, if it could be proved that the officials never saw the incident but only the video reply, could France demand a replay...? That would be insane, but laws are laws!!

Definitely! There are so many newspaper columnists here claiming it ruined the final - it didn't, it made the final! That is the image the World Cup will be remembered for; if it hadn't happened, the Cup would have nothing to distinguish itself.

A bigger problem for FIFA I believe is with the clubs. Alot of teams are unhappy with how their national teams insure their players while away at such tournaments. I can see this coming to ahead within the next four years.

You have to say Matarazzi's fall was immaculate. The way he landed was perfection. You don't learn that over night.;)
A bigger problem for FIFA I believe is with the clubs. Alot of teams are unhappy with how their national teams insure their players while away at such tournaments. I can see this coming to ahead within the next four years.
Football has some troubled times ahead - the tension between club football, which so many millions are spent on, and international football, which is enjoyed by so many more millions the world over, is sure to cause fireworks. Add in the problems caused by the concentration of money on an elite set of clubs, the pressure for success (see the current problems in the Italian league), and the European employment laws, and the future of international competition looks grave. At least in our neck of the woods. I just hope that players use their power to continue playing for their countries, which obviously means so much to so many of them.
There is so much I would change in the higher echelons of football right now, number one on the list being to turn the overblown Champions League back into a genuine cup competition of true champions. Even a fairly bland World Cup like this one blows the largely dull Champions League out of the water in terms of spectacle and drama. Except for maybe when Steven Gerrard is playing...

The problem UEFA has is the top 18 teams would really like to have their own "Champions League". They want a bigger bite of the cake.

There are lots of conflicting reports, including two separate accounts from different lipreaders! It all depends what newspaper you read. Something about his mother (who happened to have been taken into hospital on the afternoon of the final) sounds most likely.
Brilliantly, Materazzi is quoted as denying the terrorist story, claiming to be "ignorant" and not to know what the word means.

  In all fairness to Materazzi...it has become part of the culture as far back as the 70's to stir the opposition up. Its now at the stage where it is win at all cost therefore the following those not apply:
1. Fairness.
2. Respect for your fellow professional.
3. Staying on your feet if possible.
4. No shirt pulling.
5. Do not attempt to get your fellow professional sent off.

8. Don't leave your car in the carpark just because your team-mate went out and spent $200 thousand on the newer model.
The Guardian published ten humorous possibilities for what Materazzi might have said.
The best was: "You can't win Zinedine. If you strike me down I shall, become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."

Did anyone watch zidane interview by the french media??
Who does he think he is?
Now what? He is the good guy, he was innocent, didn't do anything... The bad guy is Materazzi, what the hell?? And the country and the french media support him? it's a joke or what?
Rumors say that Italy could lose its title!!! Zidane should shut up his mouth and act like a real honest man! The solution is easy!! Materazzi and zidane meeting each other in front of the media and both present excuses ! that's sport should be!! What a shame acting like that! Sorry but you ended badly your career on the field you should assume your acts!!!
What i say : he stinks like the country and the team he represents!
What a shame!!!
"Rumours say that ..." Are you that naïve to believe in rumours ? Or are you trying to fool people ? The only title that may (and should absolutely) be removed is the one Zidane won. He didn't deserve it. Italy won the Cup on the field and you can't take that away from them, even if Materazzi is @ss.
Country and media support him ? Not for his agression, not for a behavior that made my nephews cry and embarassed us in front of the world. Don't try to make this forum think France is fine with what he did. We're not.
Stating your opinion once or twice, with valid arguments and/or strong feelings (good or bad), is welcomed if done with good manners (which are not, imo). Wheter it's about football, your country or any other subject. But I say it's good that the World Cup is over. Because your last 20 messages are just about "I hate the World Cup, I hate them, they cheated, it's fake blah blah blah".
You said you work in football : then go yell this enormous hatred you have inside you to your boss or whoever you work with and stop polluting this forum with provocative and insulting posts.

What kind of a comment is this? How can you even say something like this? Why all this hate against one Country and their people? Good Lord...all you have it's hate.
If you can't play nice, don't post at all. We don't need this sh!ty behaviour here.

Hi cap70
Do you know the way of life here in France?
You can't understand the feelings of some people and the pleasure that gave us the victory of Italy against France.
France is beautiful from the outside but if you were here you would see that everything is a lie.
Sorry if what I said disturbed some or all of you but all of us don't have the positive attitude and the cruelty of the society make us happy when this one loses her hopes.

Sometimes is not what you say, but HOW you say it.
The reasons you have to like or not your Country, are yours and yours alone. You have all the right to think whatever you want to think. But you don't need to sound offensive about it, as it may offend people here. Let's not mix sports with Politics. Sport is a beautifull "art" form that unite people around the World in a VERY good way, SO needed nowdays. Politics, well, we all know what politics are about...

Varangian I understand you may mave problems in your own country but slagging it off here on these boards is not the way to go. I cannot comprehend why someone would think this way about their own country, I'm sure there are things each of us would like improved but unfortunately these boards do not have contact with governments and politicians. So can you kindly tone down your statements on the subject matter. We are talking about the sending off of a footballer here. Its not science, its not politics its football. I and everyone else on this board have been instructed that politics and religion are not to be discussed on these boards as it leads to heated and sometimes ugly debate. This is first and foremost a statue and collectibles forum. You've had your say on the matter and football in general. Its now time to let it rest.

The main fact is that:
I play soccer and some other sports with friends and we don't understand his attitude and it's annoying to see a player claiming his innocence especially when he is guilty and about 1/6 of the planet saw it.
The world cup was a great moment even if sometimes it was mixed with politics here, there was the revelation of great teams but also a big gap between big countries and "poor countries" which makes laugh when i see players who were in final and say that the referee helped a team and not the other... What could say Ghana, Tunisia,.... teams who the referees and the fifa really stole?
Hope one day we will really watch sport with a real brotherhood spirit, that's all I want.
Don't get angry after reading this I just thought that everyone could say what he wanted.
My last word:
The real world champin is:
Bowen!!! The only one who makes me dream! Yeah

I'm not angry just some others were not happy with your comments country. I can see what you are trying to say about Zidane. But he has given so much joy and happiness to France by winning the World Cup and European Championship. I for one hope that his legacy will not be his sending off but his lifting the world cup.
I also agree that the game as become corrupt (look at Italy, Juve, Fiorentina have been relegated and AC Milan docked points from next season). This is down to greed from the top to the bottom of football. Players getting huge amounts of money, agents getting huge money from signing on fees and their take from the players wages. Clubs over charging on tickets its all down to money. But do you know what? I still love the game. I love watching club football more and say the World Cup but i still enjoy watching Brazil and Italy play football they way its supposed to be.
For me the biggest disappointment of the World Cup was not that Zidane got sent off but that France who played by far the better football in the final were not rewarded. They played the best football in the games versus Spain and Brazil, although Italy did play well overall in the tournament they did not have flair up front but relied on Canaverro in defence (Canaverro was player of the tournament IMO).
Another big disappointment was the performance of Argentina after going 1-0 up against Germany. They didn't have the bottle or manager to finish off the Germans.
The encouraging thing about the world cup was the performances of the African teeams who have improved on the last world cup. I really hope one of their teams with in South Africa.

:rolleyes2 This WC was such a drama ... France should have won :banghead:
Now, I hope it won't be the end of the french team, without Zidane and Makelele ...
But congratulations to the italians players who are all very impressive :)
