I've got a question (okay, questions)for you folks.
How important is it to you to have nameplates on your statues and busts?
We have one ongoing line (FemForce) that has nameplates but other than that on our current products we haven't planned to place nameplates or work the character's name into the sculpt or base art.
Do you see nameplates as an added feature that enhances the overall sculpt?
Do you see nameplates or working the character's name into the sculpt as only applying to certain types of characters and if so, what kind and why?
You all know in the GK field nameplates are common. I'm just trying to get some feedaback as to if we should do this or not. My opinion has been that we were working to match art and that (on our products) nameplates could distract from that. Do you agree?
Thanks for any feedback. I really appreciate your help.

I don`t like nameplates I know who the character is and they take up space and distract from the sculpt IMO.

Personally I have seen some sculpts that have nameplates and while I think they look nice, I dont' really see any "need" for them. I mean you buy it cause you like it, and you already know who it is....a nameplate sort of devalues your recognition intelligence and just gives the manufacturer a good reason to up the price another $10 $15 for a little brass name tag (if you even get brass) :thumbsdow is my PO!

I like them, especially if the character has a cool logo.

Sometimes nameplates look silly on statue... :stick: I mean sometimes. :tounge:
Nameplates can look great if the design is properly done, I personally won't agnist the nameplates, but not so big on it as well.

Personally I'm not a fan of nameplates on pieces. I guess it would really depend on the piece itself. If it can be done as not to detract from the sculpt and be really unobtrusive then maybe. You could always make it optional. Have the holes predrilled for it and let the owner decide. For those who say "If you don't use it you'll have 2 holes there." well there's creative ways around that too. I'm just not a fan of words on my art. I don't understand it. If I buy the piece I do it for 2 reasons. 1) I like the sculpt 2) I like the character/characters. Either way I know about the piece. If someone looking at it doesn't know they can ask and then I can regale them with tales. It's all about the sharing. :)

I think the Nameplates RUIN the pieces. Don't like them at all.

depends, the spiderman that nagle sculpted for neca would have looked 100 times better without the amazing spiderman written on the base

Overall, nameplates are not necesary for me. There are pieces with a nameplate that dont take away from the piece but wouldnt be missed if they werent there either. Then there's a third (smaller) group of pieces that actualy work well with a nameplate and even add to the piece. But basicaly no nameplate is the way to go. There's a bigger chance of a nameplate taking away from a piece than adding to it. IMO

I think a nameplate cheapens the look of the statue. If the producer of the statue wants the name on it, I prefer it be painted on or sculpted into the base. The same applies if the character has a symbol. Another option as opposed to a nameplate that looks good is some type of pewter letter design.

Nameplates work with certain sculpts, and don't with other sculpts. For example, I think nameplates make the Rogues Gallery busts look more original, and it stylizes them.
I dislike nameplates on statues. They just are not necessary and detract from the piece, overall. In fact, I have not bought really good sculpts specifically because of the nameplates.

I agree. I have seen sculpts that I thought would be nice if they didn't have the name plates.

it doesn't seem that anyone likes them - I wonder why they continue to be added?

I have to add my 2¢ to the resounding "no" here. Nameplates/logos are a major criteria when I am considering a statue/MB for purchase. I much prefer statues without a nameplate or gaudy logo. Printing something on the underside of the base is fine, but let the sculptures speak for themselves!

Not a fan either. There's a different if the base itself would be their logo, but nameplates not so. I think Electric Tiki does theirs ok but still a bit to big sometimes to be distracting.

It depend son if it's incorporated into the design of the piece or if it just looks like it's slapped on. A good example is Electric Tiki's Zorro with the wanted poster. I think that it looks great. The Tarzan and Jad-Bal-Ja statue would look OK with a nameplate since the base is rather large. Shawn Nagle did a great Doc Savage kit and the Mayan base had the famous Bantam logo and again it looked great.
