I just finished reading this last month. It is the true account of the famous flag raising on Iwo Jima during WWII. It also deeply delvs into the lives of the men in that famous photo.

Not only is this book a great history lesson but it is also heart breaking, touching and inspirational as we learn of the true hell of the most costley of WWII battles and the after effects it had on the soldiers who were there.

It is being made into a movie and Clint Eastwood is directing.

I highly recommend this book if your looking for anything WWII related or anything moving ( especially at this most patriotic time of the year ).

Three of the six flagraisers returned home alive: James " Doc" Bradley, Ira Hayes, and Rene Gagnon. All have past on now.

A few days ago the photographer who captured the shot, Joe Rosenthal, passed away.

If you get the chance , and like to read, pick the book up. You won't regret it.

Thanks for the heads up, I saw the trailer and then saw this so I was wondering why no one had brought this up in the movie section either.

Actually there will be 2 films, like Kill Bill, released a few months apart.

I believe you are talking about Letters From Iwo Jima which shows things from the Japanese viewpoint.

Oh, they (the producers) have a viewpoint on what atrocities they committed to the Allied POW's and what they did to the Chinese civilian population in Nanking????
We are supposed to feel sorry for them. These were not conscripts/draftees most were enlistees. As far as I'm concerned they can keep their revisionist history to themselves.

My 11 year old son, who's suddenly gotten into WWII history, ordered this with his school book club order. It's now sitting on our kitchen counter. I'll have to give it a read.

Give it a shot, you won't regret it. I felt the first part of the book which deals with the flagraisers upbringings reads a little slow. However, it is essential to the rest of the book as it establishes who these men were. After that, the rest of book will be hard to put down.

Enjoy.

"I believe you are talking about Letters From Iwo Jima which shows things from the Japanese viewpoint."

Yes. I posted quickly and what I wrote was incorrect. The original idea was.....

"He is making a film on the Battle of Iwo Jima.

...well, actually 2 films.

He is going to make one HUGE film about the battle,
and divide it into two separate movies -- one from
the perspective of the Japanese, the other from the
American perspective.

He will then release both films simultaneously on
the same day."

I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's one of the best books I've read. I haven't seen the movie yet.
