Fellas,
A friend of mine (Karl Sanders) originally sculpted this dragon and its tower as a garage kit. I was lucky enought to get to paint it in an AFM article. Since then, Karl has taken my paint job and used it as a paint master for a line of pre-painted statues.

so how do you come up with a paint sceme for a statue like this?

RickDTM

That's a good question. Karl and I had some discussion as to what he might like to see, and I had some ideas as to what I wanted to do. After staring at the assembled kit for awhile, some color schemes came to mind, I started experimenting. During the process, I sent Karl in progress shots so he could see where I was going, and liking what he saw, he basically just turned me loose.

Hey Rick,

That is one SWEET piece! Beautiful paint, beautiful sculpt....it's awesome!

Now Rick...don't be modest...explain all the work you did for the tower too, eh? I tell you, RICK-A-CEE can do incredible custom work and that tower on this stautue was done SO well, that Karl went forward and used Ricks work in that for the prepaint too.

Heh, What Danno is talking about is the tower. Originally, the tower was smooth resin. I didn't think that looked right, so I scribed the grout lines into the piece, creating a stone block look. I carried that all the way around, and Karl had me do another so that he could include that into the pre-painted piece. Just a little patience and some files is all..... :D

Can't he get arrested for turning you loose?

All joking aside I've seen this piece on your website and it blew me away, stunning. Just beautiful. It's getting to the point where everytime you and Danno put up some pics I think I'm going to set up a one stroke macro loaded up with a bunch of superlatives. Rick pic...clic Danno pic...clic and done. Why bother typing this over and over and over again, I know I amgoing to have to. I think I want to see something that you guys did that sucked!!! Now that's gonna be rare to score than a Doop!!

Indeed, there are still charges pending.... :D

LOL! Sorry Zurb, anything I did I thought sucked out loud (and there have been a few...) has either been buried in the backyard, or sent to outer Mongolia!!

Karl is going to be jazzed you guys like the piece....

I've met Karl and seen this up close in person. Between the wild dRagon Karl did (he used to do the dragons for Franklin mint I believe) and Ricks most incredible paint up and rework of the tower this is one of the most definative Dragons out there.

Karl is just a great person to meet and just BS a bit with. You should also check out his DRagon in the egg piece.

If you look closely, there's a dragon fetus inside the clear egg. It's a white metal piece and cast w/in the egg.

Man Rick, I love that ALIEN Dragon sculpt and paint up! Beautiful man....that is beautiful!

Fellas, I've seen this one up close and personal....all I can tell you is that pictures do not do this baby justice. It's amazing.

That is just some mean talent on both sides. I love the dragon on the clock. All those little details would drive me mad. I know, it's a short trip, but still...

KArl has a few other pieces as well as these two DRagons. I cannot believe how he can capture so much with his work.

At the SDCC he had some prototype castings for wine bottle toppers.. something he did as a bit of a lark he explained to me. I told him make them I would want those more than the goofy ones my wife uses for the wine now.

He also did a spiderman mini bust as a trial sculpt that was just incredible.

CK - It's good size too. The see-through egg is cool, and looks GREAT when lit up form the bottom.
