Well almost... it's listed but not for sale yet.
My question is: When will they be up for pre-order on Comics Statues? Oh and by the way Tizou, this was posted here first and not on Aspen's messageboard:)
wow 350! whats the deal with that?

From the Aspen store:
"The first new Fathom statue has arrived! Showcasing Fathom's fierce female warrior Kiani, this stunning work of art is truly a sight to behold! As deadly as she is beautiful, Kiani raises the bar to all-new heights on hand-sculpted creations! Measuring over 18 inches tall and over 7 inches wide at the base, this full size statue is sure to be the centerpiece of any collection. Designed by artist Michael Turner, and sculpted by Dean Mason, this is possibly one of the most intricately detailed statues ever produced. The production run will be strictly set to orders received."

Honestly Ish... I think the cost is so high because of the difficulty to produce the figure being anchored into such an extremely intricate base... That thing sets a new bar for difficulty and unline many companies... this one pushes the production bar a bit higher and more costly...
That said... wow what a sculpt huh?

The description that I posted wasn't meant to be an explaination on the price of the statue. It is what it is and whoever wants it will more than likely buy it.
Ish,
I guess you're saying that $350 is a scandalous price to pay regardless of the talent behind it?
don't forget that this is mass produced, it's not one of a kind or a super limited run, doubt they'll only make 20 or 30 of these, the ss hulk based on kirby's art, sculpted by hulkfan, 20+ inches tall 17+ inches wide limited to 1000, sales for the same...
It's an awesome statue, but it ain't cheap.

i agree with you keith, it's like nothing outhere, and i'm getting for sure not at that price though ;), but to make it that high is a little much, i say 300 is fare...

Hope the Lava edition is not too much more expensive.
But damn that is a HOT statue though.

I am (and was) very excited about this piece but must confess to being deterred by the price a little. I'll probably want the lava version too and that'll be a whole lotta cash for two pieces. Like you say Ish, I don't mind paying for a limited run (because that's what collecting is about after all). But this could potentially be created in the thousands (though I doubt it because the price will put people off).
Also, aren't retail prices set after a discussion of the cost of production and an estimation of the amount of sales? If it's essentially an open run how is that calcullation made?
Archangel
10-03-2006, 04:36 PM
I wonder what the statue will be made of... I've heard that the base will be resin but does that mean that the rest of the statue will be the same material?

this simple script runs infinitely until you manually break out of it. the wget utility downloads the specified web page and again 5 minutes later (300 seconds). it does a comparison on the two files with the diff utility. if it returns a non-zero value from the diff then there's been change! the next call is to standard mail where here it redirects a file with the website link to my email pager alias.
i opted to search the main statue link instead of the direct one because this is not the exclusive Lava version link.

imo, way too expensive for a statue!
Way too expensive? Many have paid several hundreds, to thousands for
other sold out statues, such as Attakus Vader 1 or 2 among others.
Grey Hulks for near 2k, and Balrogs for more than that at one time too.
The original Soulfire Graces were more I believe - at least I think the
Platinum was - $400 if I remember right? Either way - I've never seen
a more beautiful and dynamic female statue, and I'll definitely be getting
one of each for my collection as soon as they're available to order.
But to each their own - everybody has their own price point for what
they choose to collect.

Comicboy
10-03-2006, 09:59 PM
Expensive for some, sure, but like JS said it's one of the most dynamic sculpts seen in along time. I'll be picking both up if possible. I just hope they go up when I'm around. And your correct JS, Platinum was $400 and worth every single penny.
So looking at it this way - Kiani is a far more difficult statue to produce,
and in my opinion actually looks more beautiful than the Soulfire Grace
(mainly due to the pose and water/lava coming up around her), so the
Kiani is actually a bargain at $350 for what we'll be receiving.
Might as well look at it like that anyways, as many of us'll be spending
the dough, so we should be happy and look on the bright side of things!

I totally Agree, When I see it at SDCC I thought it will cost at least 500 usd because of the casting proces involved in the production of this kind of statue.
I hope to be able to buy both version.

I'll guess $399.99. Since they are only resculpting the sword and everything else is a paint change I think this will keep the costs lower. It also depends on the edition size of the lava variant. It will no doubt be at least 500 but will more likely be around 1500 so this will also keep the prices lower. Now if they start using jems and precious metals that's a different story.:thumbs2:

lava edition size 500 - 1500 ... where did you get that information? and where would be the exclusiveness in that case? :confused2
the price area between regular and platinum grace was $130, and remember what was changed there: painting, some metalic accessories (spear, headgear), the platinum name plate and it was given a signed litho ... i would argue that the price of $400 was so high only because of the very small edition size of 200 made - the complete cast was the same.
So please Aspen MLT, don't do a limitation above 500 for the lava edition :(
i will be glad to pay more but receive a strictly limited piece for it than the other way round!

Ok Im really confused here...I just found out about Kiani Statue yesterday while I was at the Aspen site. It was up for sale and I thought 350 was way high. Kiani hasn't gone on sale yet so nothing has sold out. :)
Sorry for any confusion.
The statues will be limited to orders. We have no idea what those orders will be yet but based on Kiani being a secondary character in the Fathom book they might be less then the Grace numbers.
Chris is amazing and is working to make the timing the most benificial for everyone on when the Aspen store starts taking orders. Soon.
Regarding the price it is just a matter of it being a very difficult statue to produce and Aspen not being a big volume customer producing thousands of statues a year. Plus we all know that world events are affecting prices all the time. And that's especially true when dealing with importing foriegn products that travel a great distances combined with customs.
I noticed that the Ghost Rider statues on page 181 of the Previews Catalog (the same catalog Kiani is listed in) are $350 being produced by companies that produce a lot more statues then Aspen does.
Just giving some perspective on the Kiani price.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Phillip
As what comes to the price and where to buy.
I have ordered directly from Aspen several times and their service and deliveries are the very best on the market.
I live in Europe so the delivery method and cost is also one key element when ordering.
However I have ordered also from other companies.
I usually buy all the advance stuff from dcbservice.com.
They have proven themselves to be the one great company and their customer support is also far more better than in many other.
I also preordered KIANI from them today.
The preorder price was 227.49 (-35 %).
Well - what more could I say. I might not have afford to spend 350 but I do have afford to spend 230 for sure.

only 227.49. Wow
i just tried to order one from there but nothing shows up in my cart. is it sold out?
Those are some interesting remarks opm, makes me curious...
Will the timeframe for which you will be taking orders be fixed?
I assume you are looking for a minimal amount of orders but is there also a maximum you are willing to sell upholding a certain exclusivity?
Should somehow the demand be much greater than anticipated and you sell a lot more than anticipated could this in any way change the msrp you have set for this piece? I get the sense you expect low demand, I doubt this will hold true.
Will the run for the lava version be fixed or also depending orders?

I have the same Q. Hopefully, they only charge upon receipt of the piece.
That seems standard policy unless you're preordering from the ripoff artists on eBay.
The DCBS website says, "Credit card orders that do not contain comic books, trade paperbacks or hardcovers will be charged as the items ship." I assume this means statues.
Also, anyone have pics of the two statues (the reg and the variant)?
I can't picture the differences.
P.S. Is this statue on D-rod's order form page? I can't find it.
Zurbaran1
10-05-2006, 10:32 AM
The standard is pretty much to be charged at the time of shipping. I would think they follow that norm as they would lose business if they went and charged you for an item when you order it which is often months before it ships. I certainly wouldn't order it from them if they did and would look elsewhere. And they know that.

The lava edition will have a different paint scheme, the water will look like lava of course, and she will have a different sword...also resembling lava! :buttrock:
As well, the edition # for the lava version will be small like the Platinum Grace statue and will also include an exclusive print again too! :buttrock:

Maybe not rs. If this one is anything like the Grace piece you'll still be able to choose. As nice as Grace is I think this one is even better. You can buy Kiani now (as soon as it goes on sale) and I bet when they offer the lava one you could easily sell her (probably at a good profit too) and get the lava one. If you do that you'll actually wind up ahead as the profit from the regular version will knock the price of the lava one down.

I think the point is that he would have liked to have had both at the same time to decide which one he likes better. If he waits to see what the lava one looks like and he doesn't like it then it's more than likely the other one will have been long sold out and he'll be out of luck.
I missed out on the Soulfire Grace pieces. I do not intend on missing out on these.
For the record, Kiani is in the October Previews for order NOW.

Well if you must know, Mr. Nosy Parker, while I like the preview of the first statue, I can't even begin to imagine what the lava effect will look like on the other one, hence, the curiosity in seeing it. The exclusive variants aren't necessarily the better looking ones.
In any event, I took the Zoob's advice and ordered this one anyway as it'll likely sell out shortly.
If I end up liking the lava one even more, I could always flip or trade the first one away for something else.

Will there be some type of replacement program?

Please do correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe Danny is picking up this piece...
As for DCBS, if they get enough credit card fraud complaints, they'll be shut down and charged. Also, our credit card company will come through for us. It strikes me as stupid for DCBS even attempt to screw around (not that I am saying they are or have in the past) with customers when they have so much to gain and everything to lose. On the surface, they don't seem like a small time operation as the site looks like a lot of work was put into it. However, I also share the concern of dealing with someone new as my regular distributor doesn't deal with Aspen either and I have long stopped ordering through Diamond as they seem to get "whatever is left" once everybody else got their orders filled. Also, they are generally terrible with replacements.
Still, it's odd that not a single person on this thread has had an experience with DCBS.

And i'm at international, and i don't know if i will have some taxes because of this official shop website....

I don't know if I would trust a Diamond retailer for this. My comic guy is great, but this might be too risky. I had him place an order for the Aphrodite AP but it got cancelled the next month. All I know is that at 350 a piece, consumerism would be proud, and we all need to make Turner even richer since he is such a nice guy, even when he signs all my comics and other statues without looking at me or saying a word. as far as replacements go....if they have it you get it if not you get money back.your
If you find a better deal then by all means go for it.I'm sure they will make every effort to ensure that anyone who orders this statue will receive one in excellent condition.I ordered 2 Kiani's....1 for me and the other for my wife to display at her hair salon.I have other females sculpts displayed there as well and customers always compliment her plus their nice to look at while getting your hair worked on.

What's taking the aspen store so long. I can't wait to order this one.
Concerning dcbs.
I calculated and I have ordered from them nearly 30 times during the past 6 years.
My orders include many of the Code3 SW die-casts as well as Wringwraith with steed and other statues, comic books and magazines etc.
I have not encountered any problems with them.
They packaging is excellent. The shipping costs to Europe are a bit bigger but the packages has arrived always in good condition. I would prefer sheaper USPS AIR but however it has not been an option.
What comes to they selling method is that they orders are based on previews. They have ordered me some other stuff also but they webpages are based on that.
Concerning order cancellations which they sometime have (e.g. for Aphrodite IX AP) I believe it was cancelled/rescheduled by diamond and would be resolicited for 2007.
Also due to allocations they might not always get from diamond what has been preordered, however Kiani is to be manufactured as ordered so I could not see much risk here.
These are my experiences and this is NOT an advertisement so in case of any problems do not blame me.

Again we say: This is based on orders received. So if you have ordered one from DCBS, Aspen or even Alpha Centuri then, provided the orders are sent by the company from whom you ordered to the correct authorities, you will get one. Over allocation should have nothing to do with it.

Actually I have not seen the statue in person yet. My opinion is based on pictures. It seems like you have already held this statue and determined how fragile the other parts are, lol. Anyway, it's a statue and like any other statue, it's going to be really fragile. Most of the time companies would only produce a limited number of replacement statues (like SS). If they get an unusually high amount of returns due to damage their first priority are the people that bought directly from them. Plus it would also take a longer time to send the piece back to the third party supplier since they have to send it back to the manufacturer. Aspen might not have a replacement statue anymore by the time the middle person notifies them of the broken statue. I would really be pissed off if the online store tells me that they won't be able to replace my broken statue and instead they would just refund my money. I would like to keep my cool and that's why I'm ordering directly from Aspen. :thumbs2: . I'm still kicking myself from missing out on the soulfire grace statue.:banghead:

Hey guys,
I haven't posted too much on these boards, but I figured I'd attempt at answering a few questions and let you guys in on what's going on with our preorders for Kiani.
Originally, I had wanted our Aspenstore to already be taking preorders. It was supposed to have been timed with the release of the statue for sale in Diamond Previews. However, planning and scheduling everything that needed to get done for the preorder stuff unfortunately got shelved for a few weeks because we had to move our studio. As well, in the middle of the move, we were away for over a week at a good friends wedding. When we got back, everything was pretty much in complete chaos for about another week while we set up the phones, internet, office, etc. All that stuff takes 10x longer to do than anticipated so we got behind a bit in getting everything done. We're actually STILL unpacking stuff but thankfully, we're up and running and getting work stuff done. My apologies for the unintended delay. I know it stinks to keep waiting, but your wait is almost over.
This past week I finished up many of the details in order to get preorders live on our Aspenstore. We're anticipating going live sometime around the middle of next week, so check back around Wednesday or so. I'm honestly not 100% sure if you'll get charged or not at the time you place your preorder through us. Chris (at the store) is figuring that out over the next few days and all of the info on that will be posted up on the store when preorders go live.
We will keep preorders going for as long as possible to ensure everyone has a chance to get their orders placed. The cut off will occur once we know the statues are getting close to ship out, and at that point, we'll set the final production run on these. We won't know that date for some time, but will post it up on our store once we do in order to give everyone ample warning. I'll have the Diamond numbers by then so whether it's 5 or 500 or 1500 statues, or whatever the combined total comes to, the number will be set then. I'll only be making a small percentage of extras since the cost to produce these is so high. With that said, having a preorder in will be the safest way to get your hands on one of these without paying a higher aftermarket cost.
In regards to that DBCS site, I've never ordered anything from them so I don't know anything about that great discount they give. All I know is that discounted cost they're offering is pretty close to what it'll cost them just to get the statues, so I guess they just want to turnaround a lot of orders, which is great. I hope they do get in a lot of orders. As long as they have all of their preorders in to Diamond on time, they should recieve the amount they preorder. However, just so you guys know, the way allocations occur is if more retailers place orders (called an advance reorder) AFTER we've set the final print run and those orders are received in by Diamond PRIOR to receiving in the actual statues to send to stores. Basically it's during the 5-6 weeks of shipping time to get the statues from the factory to the US, and then cleared through customs. At that point, if there are more orders to fill than total statues produced (per the preorder numbers and Diamond orders we recieved in), people with a higher statue order amount could get allocated. For example, if a store in Texas originally ordered 20 statues, and then a store in Iowa places an advance reorder for 2 statues, the store in Texas might receive less than their desired 20 so the store in Iowa can get their two. I have zero control over this happening and the way allotments and allocations occur. Basically, Diamond just tries to ensure everyone gets what they request, but like I said, that doesn't always happen and some people get shorted. At that point, it's up to the store to try to find more statues to fill the orders they have, or cancel some of their preorders. That always sucks and has happened to me several times. But, you should be quite safe as long as you preorder a Kiani statue through a retailer, but just to clarify, it's not always 100% certain.
Well, unless you preorder through us.
Reason being, since we're the ones making the statue and we have control over the quantities being shipped, we won't be a part of any potential allocation. For example, if we receive preorders on our store for say 200 statues, and then I request that amount to be sent to us from the factory, that's what we'll receive. It's the exact same as what I do for Diamond, it's just that we're supplying statues from our store to a much more finite group, so we have more control. More so than trying to cater to 2500 plus retail stores like what Diamond deals with everyday. Thankfully though, we have great people that work with us at Diamond, so I don't foresee any problems whether you preorder from us, your local retailer, or an online store. Everyone is really anticipating Kiani's release and planning accordingly.
We will be giving away a cool Aspen exclusive preorder item for those that do preorder from us. Nothing major, but something cool just as a thank you for preordering it from us. Plus, our exclusive Aspenstore Lava Edition Kiani statue is just about done. It looks amazing and we're finishing up all of the final details on that baby so we can get more info out there on it. Yes, it will be more than the regular edition. How much more, I don't know yet. We're still awaiting some pricing info from the factory on a few things before we can set the final price. No, preorders for it will NOT be ready next week with the regular edition. The lava version will not be ready when the regular one is, so look for preorders on that one to start in December sometime, with a scheduled release about a month or two after the regular edition. Yes, the edition number on it will be QUITE low, like the Platinum Grace. She was limited to only 200 statues and I think the Lava Kiani will be more than that, but probably not much more.
Even though Kiani looks fragile, she isn't as frail as you may think. Yes, you should handle it with care, but we're taking every step we can to ensure she packages and ships without a scratch. Many of the procedures being done on it are some of the things helping to bring the cost up, but we're hoping this will show when you take her out of the package and display her for all to see. If something does come up after the statues are out, we'll do our best to get a workable fix or replacement done. We sent out replacement wings, bases and staffs on the Grace statue (if you still need something, let me know!), and we'll do the same on Kiani if we have to. We know this isn't just a run of the mill purchase for everyone, so we want to make sure satisfaction is as high as possible. We love making kick ass comics and products for you all to enjoy, and Kiani is no exception. When she finally comes out, I hope you'll all agree.
I know I may not have answered every question, but hopefully this info will help out some in making your Kiani statue purchase. I'll try to check back and answer more questions when I can. If not, OPM will be here as well to help out.
Lastly, I honestly don't know if Danny will be getting any of these or not. I haven't spoken to him in a while so I'm not sure. He may just be placing his order through Diamond so I wouldn't know. Also, since Sosa's been bragging to all you guys, I think I'll make him wait it out now to get his statues. Let's see if he can take it!:buttrock:

Awesome, simply awesome. Thanks for explaining all that. Very cool of you to do so and I can't wait to get these. I have no doubts you guys can pull this off, even with our sometime unrealistic expectations. Like alot of folks here I have the Platinum Grace, mine came with no problems. I remember the problems some had with the base and such, you folks handled everything superbly. You keep making pieces like these and you'll have us in the poorhouse in no time, but that's ok we'll be happy and you'll have fans for life.

Yeah, big thanks for your time and effort to explain the whole Kiani thing, frankm :) I wish you great success for Aspen Comics with Kiani!
There is one point: If a retailer like DBCS orders plenty more statues than pre-orders received, they could built up a stock of Kiani statues and sell them through their websites, right? Isn't there the danger of price dumping if any retailer would do it, and when this would also increase the edition size dramatically?
This just came in my mind since I personally hope that Kiani will receive a similar exclusivity as Grace did. :)
I also hope some of the guys here will be a little bit more tranquilized after these explanations *blinking to my french buddy Tizou* ;)

If I remember correctly there was a problem with the base, but don't know if it was only for the regular or the platinum, or both. Some people reported that the base was not accurately flat so that the statue "wobbles" a bit. I think Aspen MLT gave these people an opportunity to send these bases in for getting new ones.
My own platinum had a minor flaw, which I don't know if some others had it too (ordered directly from Aspen): one of the two "pins" of the grace insignia was missing, but it is hardly noticeable and the plate is well fixed to the base. It is a very minor flaw for me so I am still very satisfied with platinum grace :D
