Hi Everyone,

My favorite type of design is costumes. I have designed and made (with some help) a few of my favorite comic book lady villians and heros. I have also a few Star Wars costumes.

Let me know what you think.

Hawkgirl (inspired by Women of DCU Hawkgirl Bust)

yep baldcap... it was annoying... took 3 hours to put it on.. :P

I don't do orders... takes me months to just get one costume done.
For example for Hawkgirl I started at the end of August and I finished it a week before Halloween. And I was working constantly on it when I got off work.

its my hobby and I love it. I am working on a female mando (Boba Fett like) and a TIE pilot.

So cosplay is strickly a convention thing?

Is the Japanese scene bigger than here in North America?

The closest I've known is I have a friend who's into the 'Society for Creative Anachronism'. All I know about cosplay it is what I see on youtube.

The Good...

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/yNBVX-nOIWc"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/yNBVX-nOIWc" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
and the... not so good.

Japan v America it seems. The not so good was pretty scary. It takes some courage to dress up and, apparently, a lot of ability to put together a decent costume.

Those are very cool costumes.
Have you ever thought about modeling them for artists?
I know I'm always on the lookout for models and since you create your own costumes that's even better. I have met some people on Tribe that I've used in some of my work. You could always pick up some spare dough that way....just a thought.
Right now I'm working on a Baroness drawing from GI Joe....ever consider her as a costume?

wow lotsa questions.

Ok for the modeling thing... this is such a little girl thing, but I always wanted to be famous... modeling, acting, singing.... but I was given the short stick on all three, I am only 5'2". can't carry a note to save my life, and everytime I try and act my eyes get all watery... so next best thing... would be making costumes... I guess.
A cool thing happened to me at Dragon Con though... I posted this in the Sideshow Forum... I went to see Adam Hughes booth in Artist Alley and he saw me and called me over and said that he had used my picture when I was dressed up as Slave Leia as refernce for a drawing he was doing, and he remembered me from Celebration 3 in my Asajj Ventress costume... :)

Just to let you guys know that I do collect statues and use them for reference for all my costumes that I own. Statues and busts and action figures I find are the best reference since they are already in a 3-D form, unlike drawings... which can be good sometimes.

THE WINGS... I designed the harness myself... I did not want the wings to fail at all while I was wearing them and they stood up to a huge crowd at a dance club, no feathers were lost and I took alot of hits from drunk girls barging their way through the club.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b364/ms_ventress/Hawkgirl%20Costume/IMG_2784.jpg

The top just fits right over top and there is a flap of yellow material that goes overtop of the back of the wings so it just looks like two separate wings jutting out from the back.

GI JOE costume - I actually thought of making a GI Joe costume, but not Baroness, I actually wanted to make the Jinx costume... (red ninja girl).

My next superhero costume I am thinking of building is Huntress. Its going to be a challenge.. I can already see that... :P

i like getting photographed I guess... it goes with wearing a costume... it gets some attention. I like looking at references in comic books, art, watching cartoons, for how the character acts and poses. its way more fun to pose how the character would pose that just standing there in a photo. and I think the person taking the photo will like it better. So far.. my favorite costume to wear is Harley Quinn, cause she is so wacky.

There is always Darth Xio Jade, but I have no idea what she looks like. And, while she is only from the Star Wars video game world, Visas Marr is a sith.

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k220/underdog07_2006/Visas_marr.jpg

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k220/underdog07_2006/18.jpg

Here is her background:

Visas is from the planet Katarr and is the lone survivor of its destruction when it was drained of the Force by her master, Darth Nihilus. Her species, the Miraluka, is a race that lacks physical eyesight but possesses the ability to see through the Force. This ability is called Force Sight. She joins the Exile after boarding the Ebon Hawk to attack the Exile. When the Exile spares her life, it causes Visas to pledge her life to the Exile. In a final test of allegiance to the Exile, Visas confronts her old master aboard his vessel, the Ravager. Her fate ends up solely resting on that of the Exile, who either sends her to her death, or inspires her to stand up against her former master.

Visas Marr's name most likely originates from the Latin word visus meaning sight (ironic, seeing that Miraluka do not possess physical eyesight but have sight through the Force). Her last name may also have something to do with this. As it may mean "Marred sight".

Completed costumes:

Hawkgirl
Asajj Ventress
Harley Quinn
Malice in Wonderland (BE Goths Doll)
Shaak Ti
Slave Leia
Fleur Delacour (Book version Goblet of Fire)
Renissance Dress
Sith Cheerleader
501st Imperial Pub Staff (black corset & mermaid cut skirt)

Just to let everyone know... I get alot of help with the fabrication of these costumes. I am part of a costuming group, which is amazing. I am not very good a sewing... well i am not as experienced as some of the girls in the group. I have my strengths in building or modifying things... like for the Hawkgirl costume I had a dance seamstress build the top and bottoms but everything else was built or modified by myself. I am learning how to sew better, I sewed all of my Tinkerbell dress together. :)

Costumes in the Works:

TIE Pilot
Female Mandolorian
Tinker Bell
Barriss Offee

Costumes in the future:

Huntress
Black Canary
Princess Leia (GG animated maquette ANH dress version)
Catwoman (purple catsuit)
.... and many more

sweet. I have Ventress, Barriss & Luminara, and Yoda from the series. I think Leia will make a great addition. :)

For Lady Death... uuuummm.. is it the bikini version..
I saw one girl as Lady Death and she was in the leather black bikini, and covered by a huge cloak... so I don't know you didn't get to see much...

Ms. Ventress is a comic fan's dream. You ever noticed that most comic collectors are guys? Not too many females at those conventions, and when you see one in the flesh...er, in the Hawk-Girl costume I mean...lol...it brings you back to your teen years when fantasies of super powers and super-girls were rampant. I remember Gwen Stacey in the Savage Land...ah, now that was a woman! Lol. But I digress... I think it's cool that Ms. Ventress enjoys the hobby and enjoys a little dress-up too. For Halloween, I would take my nephews around (they're too old now), and I remember I had a Punisher costume, and a Green Goblin costume (with fibreglass mask custom-molded to my face and pointy purple hat). Heck, I've even dressed up as Hollywood Hulk Hogan. I'd post the pics but somehow they'd pale in comparison to Hawk-Girl. Guys would rather see her as Slave Leia...and they're RIGHT!!! You keep enjoying your hobby Ms. Ventress. It's one of the safe pleasures we have. I love your wings!!!

ms_ventress
11-21-2006, 02:40 PM
well thank you. Costuming totally drives me. and I actually get most of my inspiration from Statues or Busts... cause they are already in 3-D so I can see the seam lines and actually see how big... say Hawkgirl's helmet is.

Costuming is my favorite thing to do, and I don't think I'll ever get tired of it... maybe till I can't wear the supertight costumes... but if I ever have kids... they are going to have the best Halloween costumes ever!

well up north during the winter... sucks.. i think its -33 with the windchill today when I went outside to start my car.... I think I heard it cry a bit...

I call the Winter, Costuming Season cause all I want to do is stay inside, so during that time I cruise the web looking for ideas for new costumes, finish on-the-go costumes and maybe start the new ones if I brave a trip to the fabric store...:P

I am going to be working on a Female Mando (Boba Fett like costume) this weekend I think. :)

So cosplay is strickly a convention thing?

Is the Japanese scene bigger than here in North America?

The closest I've known is I have a friend who's into the 'Society for Creative Anachronism'. All I know about cosplay it is what I see on youtube.

The Good...

I vote the first one because that look is more identifiable as a character and not just a fashion statement.

I'd be lying if I did not mention that the fact that the first look also has a skirt with a a really long slit and the second just has pants. It's a no-brainer just on that level. :)

I have worn a movie canon Princess Leia ANH costume, with the buns and all. I wanted to make one of these costumes cause I just love the style of them. The thing I like about Leia is there is a little touch of sexiness, with the tightness of the top and the slit. And with Snowbunny Padme, I just really want to make a Padme costume, and this is one of my favorites, I will probably eventually make both of these costumes, but right now I can only afford to make one.
