ReelArt Studios brings the artwork of Silver Age comics legend Neal Adams to three dimensions with Going Ape, part of their latest wave of new statue releases.

Based on a limited edition Tarzan print published by Adams in 2001, Going Ape” depicts the jungle lord locked in life-and-death battle with a ferocious gorilla.

Sculpted by Adams' son Jason “Spyda” Adams, Going Ape is offered in a limited edition of only 750 pieces. This fully-painted resin statue is signed on the underside of its base by both Neal Adams and Jason “Spyda” Adams.

This wave of ReelArt releases is the first under their new marketing agreement with Dark Horse Comics, a deal which greatly expands both ReelArt's market exposure and Dark Horse's diversity of product offerings.

Future projects from ReelArt include fully licensed sculptures based on the works of the legendary Frank Frazetta, pin-up artist Enoch Bolles, and illustrator William Stout, as well as releases inspired by the art of pin-up icon Gil Elvgren and the heroines of AC Comics. Licenses have also been secured to produce sculptures of classic characters including Prince Valiant, Sinbad (the Sailor, not the comedian!), Buck Rogers, Sheena Queen of the Jungle, Grimjack, and others.

Dark Horse: Reel Art Studios – Neal Adam’s Going Ape Statue
This is the third new statue from the partnership between Dark Horse (http://www.darkhorse.com/) and Reel Art Studios. It’s also probably the one that comic artists will flock to the quickest because of artist Neal Adams. He’s a god in the industry, and having anything with his sweat built into it is a treat for any hardcore fan.

The statue itself is not the kind of thing you are going to want to put in the baby’s room. It’s pretty dark, and it’s pretty bloody. What you get is a barbarian in the midst of battle with a big ol’ monkey. The detail is insane. You can see every single rippling muscle on both the barbarian and the ape. Seeing how they are flexed and tensed as they struggle with each other gives the statue a real emotional presence.

That emotional presence is made even more real by the great sculpting on the characters’ faces. They both look like they are in the fight of their lives. Add to that the brilliant paint job, complete with vibrant blood on both the monkey and the barbarian’s knife, and you have more than just a sculpture, you have a piece of art that tells a story. I would advise picking this one up.
