Michael Golden?? What's special about him. [Archive]

Hey Michael Golden drew the Avengers 10 Annual first Rogue with Spider-Woman. The things I see on Ebay such as a Dr. Strange pannel page goes for 4k. Is this guy dead? Is he not producing stuff anymore? Because I noticed he's not like John Byrne where only the X-Men stuff is crazy. But all of this stuff seems to go for big bucks. Does anyone know his story or why people like him.

well his art is well liked..although i think his con sketches are eh. his work on marvel fanfare and the nam were killer. Also his work on the batman special and micronauts should not be overlooked.

I don't know his story, but I know he was something of an artists artist. He is cited by many as a big influence. Personally I preffered his 70's/80's stuff. In the 90's his work took on a bit more angular-feel. I think he is known for combining detail with a powerful sense of movement or dynamic energy.

He did an incredible Marvel Poster during the late 70's, early 80's. I don't think he ever produced a huge body of work, mostly covers. I think his interior art is fairly scarce. I believe he left comics for a period of time.

Outside of the fact that his art kicks ass is there really any other reason for people to like him?

He's not dead (unless he died recently and I didn't hear about it, but I don't think so) and I believe his most recent work was doing cover art for DC.

I also hear that he's also a pretty interesting guy. Larry Hama used to tell stories about Golden receiving all of his phone calls at a biker bar and about his intimate knowledge of firearms.

He also did lots of GI Joe and Transformers work, so there is a certain nostalgia value to his stuff for those of us in our 30s/40s who grew up with that stuff. He's certainly not dead, but G-man is right, his current Con Sketches are major league "eh" at best.

12 issues of Micronauts and 12 or 13 issues of the Nam are the most he's ever done on one title. Everything else is an issue here and there. There were 5 or 6 issues of the Jackie Chan Spartan X series, though I'm not sure they were all released.

I remember hearing when I was in Kuberts school that he was in prison.

That Wiki article has it right:

His very distinctive style combined a rounded, almost three dimensional approach as well as realistic lighting effects and a strong grasp of facial expressions, design and anatomy.

The first work of his I saw was Micronauts #1, and I had never seen anyone with so much "texture" in their work. His work with lighting and shadow really made it stand out. And his attention to detail is amazing - he never cuts corners. Here's one of my favorites:

I've seen some of his recent stuff and it just doesn't hold a candle to what he did back in his heyday, the late 70's/early 80's. I guess that happens with most artists though (Neal Adams, Steve Ditko, and Jack Kirby are three huge examples). I wish he had been a bit more prolific during that period, but his Marvel Marching Society poster from 1982 remains the single piece of original artwork that I would wish to have given the chance. Utterly gorgeous.

I've loved his work from the first time I saw it for all the reasons already mentioned. His Marvel Fanfare story Spidey and the Xmen in the Savage Land is phenomenal.

Image recently released a portfolio entitled Monsters by him and there was supposed to be a Heroes portfolio as well.

Tomorrows should do a Modern Masters volume on him.

I had forgotten about those issues, but you're right, they are gorgeous. Paul Smith (another favorite artist of mine) finished up the story, but as nice as his stuff was, Golden's just totally blew it out of the water. One distinguishing characteristic of his work back then were his big "Speed Racer/Manga-style" eyes on his characters. Not too many other artists could pull that off, but he sure did.

The Fanfare issues really made me wish he could have done a few Spidey annuals back then, he really drew a fantastic Wall-Crawler.

Perhaps I'm way off here, but for some reason Art Adams work reminds me of Golden's back in the day...dunno why.

Michael Golden is an absolute legend! As a young comic reader in the 70s and 80s, I can remember being bespelled by Golden's incredible artwork, particularly the amazing detail and the accurate depiction of machinery, weapons etc. So many of today's artists quote him as a major influence and you can see it in their work (Art Adams, Jason Pearson etc.).

Although I have culled my collection from time to time, my issues of Micronauts, Marvel Fanfare, The 'Nam, Bucky O'Hare, Spartan X etc. have never been sold or traded off! If you search out those issues and read them, I'm sure you'll enjoy the experience :)

Naturally, for those like me who grew up with his work, we'd love to purchase some of his originals. Unfortunately, pages like the one from the Doc Strange issue are beyond my reach as is most of his work because he produced only a limited amount of pages which are in great demand. Thankfully, he is still producing and we continue to enjoy his current material and maybe one day (if I sell off some of my Adam Hughes or Bryan Hitch artwork) I might be able to afford a Golden page ;) Regards,

I never really cared for the Micronauts comic. BUT, in my memory, Golden's work on that series stands out as vividly in my memory as anyone's art during the 80s. His art looked simply stellar.

Big fan of Golden's here, too.
His Dr. Strange work (especially on the D'Spayre issue) is some of the best in my memory.
I wish he'd done more, and I've always wanted that Marvel Motion poster of his. :)

Trades? Unfortunately, no. :( But the first 12 comics were reprinted in a 5-issue baxter format series as "Micronauts: Special Edition".

I'd like to see Marvel make a reprint deal with the licensor and get some trades out there, like they did with GI Joe: A Real American Hero, and Essential Godzilla. Those Micronauts comics reeeeeeeeeeeeally need to be collected.

In a horror vein, he did some early work for DC in House of Mystery and House of Secrets. Also, a beautiful adaptation of Poe's The Cask of Amontillado in Marvel Classic Comics # 28.

This man was a comic powerhouse. Marvel had a great and rare talent. His lines were always clean, smooth and dynamic ( with excellent ink assists to Mr. Rubenstein). His art was very singular and could not be confused with others in the industry.

His run on Micronauts still survives in my collection. Awesome stuff. Somewhere I still have his Marvel Universe poster where others have vanished through time.

It's funny you bring up Rubenstein...I was at a Creation Convention in Philly as a kid & Joe was on a panel. When asked why he wasn't inking the Micronauts anymore, he said Marvel took him off it because they didn't like his inking style over Golden!
