Dark Horse: Reel Art Studios – William Stout’s Dino Girl Statue
This statue reminds me of Ralph Bashki’s Wizards. If you don’t know what that movie is, rent it or look it up online. It’s probably the single-most weird cartoon from the 1970s (besides Watership Down). This second release from Dark Horse’s partnership with Reel Art Studios shows the company’s love of Cheesecake-style pin-up. That means that fans of artists like Olivia, Arroyo and even Frank Cho will want to follow the company closely. Actually, I do believe there is a statue coming down the line from Reel Art Studios that Frank designed.
Dino Girl is a sweet little statue. While A lot more cartoonish that William Stout’s One, it still has a lot of charm. The cartoonish quality is what I actually like the best about this piece. There is an innocence and a playfulness here that would be missing if a more realistic route was taken. Sure it’s not as detailed, but the details present count for more. Just look at the head-to -toe sculpt of DinoGirl, or the almost flirtatious expression
on the Dinosaur’s face as he licks his lips. It’s a great sculpt with awesome paint and a unique style. It’s a keeper.
