sure. i've never been asked for prints before, but i'd be more than happy to oblige. gotta work some test prints out . .. i'd rather not send anything out smaller than 20"x24", one size bigger if i can. let me know which ones you all are interested in and i'll figure it out.

Wow those are very cool. Your compostition and use of light intensity are great.
Do you use human models?

Mandragora
02-16-2007, 08:35 PM
thank you! :)

about the human models . . . are you asking if i practice on people first and then take the shot . . or if i take pictures of people also? nope to both

although lately i am on a "nude" theme. that is . . trying to replicate (people size) nude photography. i'm hoping to get a little more "action" oriented soon.

I'm saying , you need to hire models and take some action poses.
I think you could have a great deal of success.

Agreed.

I mean the pictures (or photgraphy) are/is great. But IMHO it is what you do prior to taking the shot that is most amazing. The poses and the perspectives. Super!:thumbs2:

thanks guys! :)

the more i think about it the more i'm sure i'm really not interested in taking shots of real people.

i really enjoy the challenge of trying to get the figures to look as life-like as possible. i think i accomplished this with spiderwoman and b. panther . . . . well, they're the closest at least.

besides, cost of human size studio space in NYC aside, in my experience people are not nearly as much fun as figures.;)

any suggestions for improvements or future shots are totally welcome!!

It's all gravy baby! Do what you like.
You do very good work and I think limiting yourself to action figures might be counterproductive. At least try a couple shots of an actual person, that's all I'm saying. You might find you really enjoy it. I could see your stuff doing very well in a gallery. Models are not really hard to come by, and they aren't always pricey. Maybe you have some friends who might be willing to pose wearing costume. I know alot of photography I've seen out there, can't hold a candle to your stuff.
Anyhow, maybe eventually you might consider it after you've exhausted the action figure photos. You have serious talent, have you tried to submit your work to any galleries?

armitage . . you have really truly made my day! thank you! :buttrock:

i have yet to submit my work to any galleries, although that has been on my mind, and is in the works for the near future. its interesting . . . the art world (especially in NYC) is a funny funny place. :confused2

ok, i can totally promise that i will consider taking shots of real people after ive exhausted the action figure shots. but here's my question for you: just for the sake of argument . . . .what do you feel a real person dressed up in an angel costume can offer me that this ML angel can't? . .. or maybe a better exampe is beast . . either way.

I think you're right about the dressed up person, but even a straight nude would be interesting, IMO its your vision that makes the pics so unique. But keep doing your thing with the action figures you got something going right there, just keep the "real people" in the back of your mind.:thumbs2:

Thanks Mandragora!
To answer your question,"what can a person dressed in an angel costume offer you that the ML angel can't?"
I would say you would be more apt to find fluidity in a live model. As well as have them interact with objects in a way action figures cannot. Plus the dynamics of people directed from a photographer who can capture a shot like you, can be limitless.
You gave Beast as an example, can you get a facial expression from your figure of Beast? No. Could your figure hold a book like a live model and make it look as believable?
Maybe but I think it would come off more static, than if a live model were in that position.
What you've done with the action figures is great no doubt about that. And I would love to see more. But IMO it could be so much more and I think you should at least at some point take the chance.
I can forsee good things in your future, but you gotta be ready to climb that mountain. It's not gonna be easy and you'll have to work very hard at it, but nothing worthwhile ever comes easy.
Seriously, you have the talent and that's like 85% of it. The rest is knocking on doors and promoting yourself.

So, here i am, sitting at work on sunday trying to put into words my response to this . .. thinking . . no its not right . . no, its not what i do. Then i get hit with inspiriation as to what the first shot would be. *sigh* The idea as yet isn't nudes or anything, . . . way darker . . . we'll see. Thank you armitage.

As far as climbing the mountain, i totally know. I've been taking these shots for about 6 years now and have spent most of my energy (until i found this forum of course) trying to get people to look at them like photographs and not like toys. But trust me, i am so determined to make something out of this (improbable as it might be) that i don't plan on stopping anytime soon . . . whether my models are 6 inches or 6 feet tall, i'll figure it out.

thank you guys for all your input!! :)
