That's a cool custom, ryche! :) I don't collect Marvel Legends but I find myself with six of them around my office: both Vision variants, both X-23 variants, Mysterio and the combined Sentinel figure, which is so incredibly cool. I loved Mego figures growing up, but I would have passed out with excitement if I had had all these great Marvel Legend figures when I was a kid. It's simply top-notch stuff! :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock: But like my 7-year-old nephew says, "They need a Blob Marvel Legend!" I agree with him.
(By the way, I believe my Mysterio figure is part of the Marvel Legends line, but I may be wrong.)

this new packaging really makes no sense.
Does this ever happen to you guys....you start lookig through the pegs at the store (Toys R Us, Wal-MArt, etc.), and you come actoss a variant! When you pull it out from the rack, you find that the packaging has been intentionally bent so the figure is no longer truly "mint". Thats GOT to be the stockers of these items. The people who stock the toy aisles take a LOT of crap from variant hunters, and that is how they get back at them. One guy at Toys R US actually told me that they open the boxes in the back and bang up the variants on purpose (he was referring to hotwheels). That way word gets out to the hardcore collectors to not bother rampaging into the stores at dawns early light because they are not going to find any mint collectibles that are flip worthy.
The plastic clam shells REALLY cut down on that kind of behavior. Going back to cardboard is really a step in the wrong direction, IMO.

I gotta get a Banshee. Sweet! So is the Hasbro Marvel Legends the same line as the previous Marvel Legends, except that they're made by a different company? Same scale and all?
rychehitman
12-23-2006, 12:30 PM
yep...same scale and all.
Toybiz is no longer the company that holds the Marvel License to produce figures. HASBRO is the company with the license now. These are virtually the same pieces, but some different sculptors are involved.

Agreed, the new packag style makes me sick, regardless of the collectibility or mint condition etc, the clam shell is still the best way to show off your figure(in package) and comic book background is always awesome.
I kinda get an idea when I constantly find those variant with ruined package...But do this intentionally is really unethical, can't believe what's going on in people's head, all twisted and full of poop.:stick:

Well, let us know when you are going to purge!
I actually don't like when they put Spidey foes into the Marvel Legends line. They can be released with the same articulation in the Spiderman series. I'd rather see more oscure Marvel characters released.
My favorite imaginative series would be called "The Aragorn Series" and it would have the Black Knight II Dane Whitman (Variant Black Knight I ~ Master of Evil), Valkyrie, Nova (Richard Rider), Tigra (variant Hellcat), Medieval Iron Man (since their needs to be an Iron Man in every other wave), and The Wrecker...all containing horse pieces that can be used to build Aragorn for either the Black Knight, or Valkyrie to ride!:thumbs2:

I first heard about this years ago and it was actually a company policy (I forget which retailer) to punch holes in the card or cut it or something. The rationale was the same; discourage collectors from picking over the merchandise and grabbing all of the variants or "hot" collectibles.
The Fog
12-26-2006, 09:58 AM
Yeah, heard about punch holes in HOT WHEEL'S, Treasure Hunt car's, collector's get kicked in the ass, then they start on Marvel Legend's, seen some have punch holes or folded corner's from the store, all folded in the same area's.
Stopped getting them.

I hate you Deadpool, you've got to be the luckiest man this side of the moon. I have never gotten a variant from any of the stores that I have gone to. I was beginning to think that variants were a conspiracy between the toy manufactures and retails stores where they say there is a variant but once you get to the store, they never really have one. A kick back would then go back to the manufacturer for help getting the customers in the door:redface:
The Target and Toys R US where I live never have variants and I mean never. If they did the stock guys in the back keep them off the shelves and sell them on Ebay or the manager pulls them off the shelves to give to his bratty son or nephew. Its a conspiracy I tell ya.

Before you go bangin' on the stockers for intentional abuse, you should look at the behavior of some of the collectors said stockers have to deal with. We don't really get any Marvel fanatics at our store, but we're lousy with Hotwheels guys. I'd say there's about six of them who come in every night, rain, shine, holiday, whatever, and out of those, one is a decent, genuine human being. The others, if they see a case of Hotwheels on the bottom of the skid, will demand you stop what you're doing to unload everything on top of it to get to it, or if nobody is in the area, will unload it themselves, cut the tape on both sides of the packages, remove the treasure chests, and either leave the whole mess like that or take the case somewhere and dump it off. We don't stock the Hotwheels on thirds anymore because of this kind of behavior, we let the department manager deal with it. And ever since we switched to that, they've been actively trying to get the department manager fired for supposedly selling them on ebay herself. I don't like the woman, but I also know she doesn't own a computer. I find it absolutely disgusting to try and remove someone's livelihood over a .79 cent car.
Also, you should see the condition some of the freight is in when it's sent out to the departments. Either in transit to the store or in the process of being unloaded in the back, cases get ran over, dropped, liquids spilled on them, and just generally trashed.
Are there stockers out there who intentionally abuse items to deter collectors? Probably. The policy at our store is being coached if you do it. Three coachings, for any reason, and you're terminated. Personally, I don't find it worth putting my job in jeopardy over toys.
I know this comes across as a bit of a rant and Ryche, you know I have no problem with you whatsoever, so don't think this is against you in any way or anything. You're cool :thumbs2:
Bottom line, when you're shopping anywhere, unless the sales person has gone out of their way to offend you, treat them like a decent human being and you'd be amazed how helpful they'd be. For every customer who is polite there are ten who treat you like crap and sometimes you're forced to smile while they tell you you're nothing because you work there (really happens.)
I like the approach Hasbro's taking with the artwork on the packaging, but do wish they'd stick with the plastic simply because of the durability.
One last thing, you guys might want to hit your local Wal-Marts as we just put over 2,000 items in toys on clearance at ours. Amongst those are the new legends two packs (now $11) and the DVD 20th Anniversary Optimus Prime (now $45). Lots of other stuff of course but those are the two that caught my eye.

Tuv, buddy , we are cool, no worries. :thumbs2:
I wasnt trying to bash stockers as a whole, or make a blanket statement at all. I have met soe really cool stockers that have hooked me up throughout the years.
I know there are some stores with policies, and I have seen firsthand variant chasers be rude A-holes to the stockers in search of their variant fixes, which is not cool, (So I really dont blame any stockers or stores for bending variant packaging if they are having that problem~ Hell, I would probably do the same thing!)
The plastic is far better packaging for all involved due to the durability as you mentioned, and as you also stated stockers should be treated as human beings. Its not cool to boss them around, or take out your anger on them because you cant find a variant. After all..these are TOYS people!:thumbs2:

You make some great points tuv and I COMPLETELY agree with you. I am one of the decent collectors but I get the evil eye when employees see me looking at the labels on the outside of boxes sitting on the pallets in the aisleway.
We have been trying to complete a set of the diecast cars from the movie Cars and have been successful a few times in asking employees for help. I asked an employee at TRU for some help twice and both times they went into the back and brought me cars that I needed that were not on the shelf. As soon as she brought out the boxes, two other employees were within a few feet of me burning a hole in my back watching me go through them looking for cars I didn't have.
What really burns me is when stores keep stuff in the back when the shelves are low or empty. This does happen in my area - especially at Target. They were out of the cars on the shelf and I asked about restocking. Instead of re-stocking the shelves, he asked me which one I wanted and came back with that one only and left the shelves completely empty. This really gets me fired up when I go out of my way to a stores and there is nothing on the shelf and being kept in the back.
I do think there is considerable package-damaging and stock hoarding going on in some stopres (not all). Employees can be in the wrong as much as customers (I think there are far more bad customers than employees)

the packaging design looks nice, and ditching the free comic onside for artwork lifted from several comics is noce too. I just think the industry as a whole has progressed to the entire plastic clamshell rather than a plastic bubble on cardboard being the superior way to package and ship these pieces. Going back to cardboard backs is a step in the wrong direction and will lead to more pieces arriving to the stores damaged, being damaged on the rack, etc.
Some of us DO like to keep some in the packages that are in MINT condition (I take PLENTY of them out as well, but I do keep a fair amount in their coffins...no comment from Coca needed!:banghead: :) )

Build A Figures....
When the concept was introduced with Galactus, I was skeptical. After putting one together in person I quickly jumped on board. The artistry and articualtion was awesome! Then came the Sentinel...well...I am up to 7 of them now (thats a LOT of open figures)..., the Apocalypse. Now Apocalypse really didnt do anything for me, as I dont think of his as being in that large of a scale, but I enjoy the figure well enough.
In My opinion those first three did what they were supposed to do! They presented figures that fit into the collection that were too large of a scale to be produced individually without costing an arm and a leg to the producer to make and the retailer to buy.
I think that Onslaught brought things down several notches. Poor sculpt, and a character that really was just a hair bigger than Abomination, and not really worthy of being a B.A.F. I think an Onslaught character could have been sculpted the same size as Abomination and pulled it off. Mojo is REALLY not BAF worthy or necessary. That guy could have been made as a single unit release. He could be portrayed smaller and still be respected. Giant Man was a return to excellence, but maybe TOO articulated, and I think M.O.D.O.K. was a good choice as well.
Moving onto the Hasbro line....Blob looks like total crap (IMO), but I can see the need for him to be A BAF to be done right. But Annihilus can without a doubt be done in the Abomination scale and be pulled off masterfully.
There are so many LARGE SCALE characters that can be done that could be GREAT BAF's...why are they choosing a character that is not NEEDED to be a BAF and makign him into one?
I would much rather see a series that had the Black Knight and Valkyrie in them and have Aragorn offered as the BAF, since there is no other way we will ever see an Aragorn. How about a Civil War Series that has GOLIATH as the BAF? How about the Living Monolith? A Celestial? A Thunderbolts series with T-BOLTS GOLIATH? or Bi-Beast? These characters cannot be done outside of the BAF format.
Annihilus looks like a nice sculpt, and I am happy to see him being produced, but BAF was not needed to pull it off!
Thats all I am trying to say!:thumbs2:

that is a great pic Ryche! awesome!
I think your points are dead on for the BAFs ... scale is a huge (puin intended) issue for me as well. I have not built any of these up but I would be frustrated to have characters way out of scale as well. Now id they do a BiBeast - I am there for sure!!
I open everything I buy unless it is for flipping purposes (not many) so the packaging is not that much of a concern to me. I do dee why this would be a detriment as MANY of these are sold to collectors and a higher frequency of damaged product on the shelves would clearly slow down sales.

I am starting to get CARS now too JG...
Which are the hard ones to find????
I thin Lizzie is the hardest to find - from the initial release. McQueen and Old Mater are the commons and I think Sarge, Leakless, New Mater are tough finds.
I only need Leakless and New Mater to have all released to date ... I cannot find them anywhere:banghead:

I bought that sorry-@$$ repaint Goliath just because I was tickled to see a Goliath toy hit the stores. But it's a sad excuse for a Goliath figure.
So I actually bought enough ML Giant-Man series figures (and unloaded the figures I didn't want) to build Giant-Man TWICE... one set of Giant-Man parts is waiting (in storage) to customize into a REAL Goliath figure.
I'd been looking for a BRB, don't know why I was having trouble finding it. At the KC Con a couple of months back one guy had a single one he was selling for $75. I told him no way. Then saw it on Amazon for about $20 and just before I pulled the trigger on that I was in Toys R Us picking up something for my kid and saw it for $8.99. Thank goodness!
Still looking to pick up the Marvel Monsters box set...

We are SWIMMING in BRB's in Ohio! If anyone needs one, let me know!
Nebraska is still stuck in Mojoworld where ML is concerned. The only one warming the pegs here in regards to MODOK is Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell, natch).
Also, IMHO, I love the tan BRB more than the orange one. Yeah, the orange one is sorta comic-accurate, but maybe I'm just partial to the first Bill I got. =(
(And I have WAY too much with action figures, which is sad for someone like me at the age of 20 (http://pics.livejournal.com/eleganceliberty/gallery/0000x4c5?.view=grid))
Btw, I've been preaching the virtues and awesomeness of BRB to nearly all of my friends. Poor folks, they've had to put up with it for about half-a-year now. (Hey, at least I got 'em to read Thor #337!)

I may pick up Emma Frost if I see her, 'cuz my Phoenix could use a punching bag in my wacky photos that isn't Bill. ;]

i've been *****ing about the shrinking BaFs since series 13, pisses me off so much, they cut down on the number of accesories, raise the price AND shrink the BaF to the size of a normal figure  and even worse is the odds of a true large BaF again are very slim, so we'll probably never get somebody like Fing Fang Foom or another big guy :(

GREAT IDEA!!!! Nova's a little out of place but it's still much better than a lot of the assortments we've been getting!
Other characters that would be great MLs: Black Bolt, Nighthawk and Sunfire.
I also agree that there's a lot of other characters who are best done as BAFs, like an accurate Goliath.
p.s. I love your group photo!

Anyhow, I stopped by Target after a doctor visit this morning and everything BUT the ML pegs were stocked full. =/
9.99 is a rip-off price, IMHO. It's bad enough I had to fork over almost $9 for Wasp (that was about $7.98 /w tax). Then again, some may consider the $15 I spent on Bill ridiculous, but that was 'at cost+shipping' that I got from someone. (And trust me: Bill ain't easy to find in my neck of the woods)

if you guys want to be seriously depressed...........the latest TOYFARE that I got in the mail today has an article with pictures of TOYFARE Marvel Legends that were never released.
HAND Ninja, A.I.M. Agent, HYDRA thug, Hellfire Club guards, Doom robots (not doombots..the robots in his army..),
A Variant THOR Frog was to be released with the Giant Man wave, but was cancelled, and the AoA Sabretooh in the Giant Man wave was supposed to come with an AoA Wild Child chained to him, but the giant man foot was too big.

thats right iremember those! Wasnt there a line of ML's where each character was sposed o come with a 'sidekcik' of sorts..ie - the hydra guy, aim, etc..they were little and came with the main fig...
Variant Thor frog would have been awesome!
rychehitman
01-10-2007, 03:17 AM
the pics looked GREAT! They had a pic of MODOK in a room with several A.I.M. scientists...it looked GREAT!

The "henchmen" series was supposed to be released with series 13. The Brood and Skrull figures were salvaged and are soon to be released in a Marvel Select Alien Legends Action Figures 2 Pack due to be shipping 2nd quarter 2007.
Crimson Dynamo got canned too!
the rest were scrapped! I'd much rather have the henchmen instead of the crappy Onslaught BAF!

how close are you all to one another? If we gathered goodies and sent them to one person, could you all meet up and divvy up the goods?

The AoA Sabretooh in the Giant Man wave was supposed to come with an AoA Wild Child chained to him, but the giant man foot was too big.
Why not just buy the Sabretooth and Wild Child from ToyBiz's earlier AOA line? As puny as Wild Child was in AOA, he'll still be right in scale with the Giant-Man series Creed.

I saw a Black Moonknight, and a whole ton of Spider-Womans, Wasps, one Crown of Thorns Loki, and a Destroyer. I didn't know how rare the Destroyer was so I put him back. :banghead: I really could have used him to try and trade for a Dark Phoenix from Marvel Legends 6 which I still havent found.

I know someone on Fwoosh managed to get ahold of it before Hasbro themselves took the picture down, so I'll see if I can find a copy.
