View Full Version : Is there any support for the Original X-Men?

Okay, I know many of you prefer the post GS X-men #1 team, and a good deal of the fans of the original team prefer the "graduation" costumes featured in the classic Steranko and Adams issues...but I have to believe that I'm not alone in wanting to see Full Size statues of the original X-Men in their yellow/black costumes.

So far we've seen Bowen Designs produce FS statues of Iron Man as he first appeared in his grey armor, Daredevil in his yellow/red fighting togs, a Grey Hulk, Captain Marvel in his short-lived Kree uniform, Captain America in the costume he wore only once during his debut in '41, and Namor in his red trunks (as per his 1st Silver Age appearance in FF #4).

In short, there has been a FS statue featuring the premiere costume, or look (when it differs from the current/more famous one), of nearly every Marvel hero Bowen Designs has sculpted...except the X-Men.

Is it because the costumes look too similar? Heck...so do Reed and Sue's.

Is it because they might not sell? Guys, these are the X-Men...the rabid fan base is there.

Is it because a series of Silver Age X-Men statues has been done by another company already? Pardon my judgemental opinion, but they looked like utter crap. Besides...when has that stopped Randy from making statues of any number of other characters...from Elektra to Dr. Strange to Nick Fury.

So many of us here, myself heartily included, love the period of greatness that Marvel Comics ushered in during the 1960's. It was this love for these characters that drew us to Bowen Designs in the first place a decade ago when Randy began sculpting the heroes that populated the Marvel Universe. When I see the gorgeous displays that so many folks here have of their statues, the one thing that continually strikes me as a glaring omission is the lack of Lee and Kirby's original team of misfit teens. We've got the Fantastic Four, Spidey, the original Avengers (as soon as ant-man gets done), Daredevil, The Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange...the entire Marvel pantheon...but not a single X-Man prior to 1975.

How can any display of Marvel heroes from the heyday of Marveldom be complete without them? Answer...it can't.

We need 'em...and the sooner, the better. The clock is ticking.

a bust of the original Iceman would the most that I would like of any of the originals.

If these were made I would be very interested. The only thing I'd like better if they were in the graduation/ Neal Adams era costumes. The black and yellow is great, but the distinct individual costumes like the classic Marvel Girl green skirt and yellow mask would make the difference for me.

I could possibly force myself to tolerate the baggy uniforms, primitive bases and uninspired poses of this set...if it weren't for the fact that the facial sculpts are so uniformly grotesque. Bowen's worst effort is several orders of magnitude nicer than any of these.

Which is why we need to see them done Randy!

Black and yellow or blue and yellow .. as long as it's the original X-Men, I'm in.

Well, seeing as how Ant-Man is pretty much my grail as far as Bowen statues go, I can't fault you there ;)

However, I'm just trying to make the point for them being made eventually...they are just about the only silver age Marvel team that has been ignored thus far.

I'd buy both the original version and the Neal Adams version. I'd prefer the original team to be done in dark blue or black with blue highlights and Professor X in his original green suit.

My guess is that BD will opt for colors similar to the Cyclops and Shadowcat (Kitty Pryde) mini busts or the FS Cyclops in order to maintain consistency.

I'm pretty sure that BD will produce both the original version and the Neal Adams version in phase IV. One version will probably be done in full size and the other version as mini busts.

Although I'm a hardcore Silver Age fanatic, even I'd acknowledge that the Adams costumes ought to garner the FS spot, and leave the yellow/black version for the MB's. Given my druthers, I'd prefer they all be FS'ers...but it's only logical to give more individualized outfits the spotlight.

Snowman Iceman didn't last that long, I'm sure a fully iced Iceman would look fine with every costume interpretation of the X-Men. But I'd take the black-and-yellows before the later costumes.

Geez, I kinda liked lumpy Thing :confused2

Back in those early days, Ben looked truly hideous...you could see why being "The Thing" really screwed with his head. When he turned all rocky later, he still didn't look human, but he didn't look quite so grotesque.

I'd be all over these! Classic look for these guys. Please do MB's too (I don't have room for many FS statues). And bat collector, Marvel heroes have been around since '63, with many fans from each era. There's more out there than just the '90's. Randy himself has said he's more of a Silver Age fan, so I think he's more prone to do these guys than Exodus.

Original X-men, with Snowman, if your talking Classic.
Actually I like the "frosted" Iceman minibust better then the "clear" one, so I'd go for a "Frosted" Iceman FS with the rest in Blue and Yellow Original Uniform's, right out of Xavier's schoolhouse.
DST's set wasn't that bad, but I'd sell it in a minute, to make room for BD's version.
