Who was your favorite Hard Rock/Grung/metal/Alternative band of the 90's. I'm including what I would think would be the definitive bands of that era. Only 10 options though, so I can't include everyone. Please forgive me if I left off such bands as Pantera and Godsmack.

I decided to edit to include the albums released by them (not all inclusive) in the ninties:

Nirvana - Nevermind, In Uetero, Unplugged
Pearl Jam - 10, vs, vitalogy, No Code, Yield
Alice in Chains - Facelift, Dirt, Alice in Chains, Unplugged, Sap, Jar of Flies
Metallica - Black Album, Load, Reload, Garage Inc
Soundgarden: Badmotorfinger, Superunknown, Down on the Upside
Korn: Korn, Follow the Leader, and Life is Peachy
Tool: Undertow, Anema
Rage against the Machine: Rage against the Machine, Evil Empire, Battle of Los Angeles
Nine Inch Nails: The downward Spiral, The Fragile
Smashing Pumpkins: Siamese Dream, Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Adore

You gotta be kidding! The released Use your Illusion 1 and 2 in 1991 and dropped off the face of the earth! but, I guess I could have bumpbed NIN for them.

Aerosmith was at least a good choice, but they were too pop. Can't please everybody.

Well, they stradle the fence. Appetite for destruction was like 88 or 89. Maybe they released some more. I'm sorry Big G. I should have kicked Tool or NIN out for them. :D

I think Guns n Roses deserves to be on the list, and just like Mettallica, their best stuff came out in the late 80's-early 90's. The others on the list can't compare to these 2 great bands.

It was tough call. But I think Guns n Roses definitive album came out with Appetitie for destruction. Use your Illusion I and II, while good, can't compare to a whole decade of work for these other bands.

I mean, Metallica had the black album, load, reload, s&m and garage inc in the 90's. The others had whole careers in the nineties. Sorry, but while I may have kicked out either NIN or Tool, I think they are more defintive 90's bands than GNR, who is pretty much has the glam and spandex of 1987.

Just my opinion.

Understood, but I compiled what I thought were the best songs for most of these bands on 1 or 2 Cd's, and I seem to always want to listen to Guns & Roses. The others seemed to get old after time, including some of Mettallica's "greatest" hits. Too bad G&R didn't stick around longer to be considered one of the best.

Good point, Big G.

I only started listening to music in the 90's, so I have a far greater affinity for these bands than I think people of the 80's do.

I voted Pearl Jam, but I'm in total agreement about G n R.

For those of you that really like them, check out the CD that just came out a few months back called Hollywood Rose - The Roots of Guns N Roses. It's an interesting album and fun to hear them before they exploded onto the 80's scene.

Who knows, maybe Chinese Democracy will get released next year. They were so close to releasing it, then the guitarist (known as Buckethead) left and they started to re-record his parts with someone else.

Gotta be NIN!!!

Trent Reznor continually pushed the boundaries of what music can be and could do. Add that to his whacked out and cutting edge videos, and you see the ultimate culmination of Art plus Rock in a way that no one cares about today.

A close second would have been Tool--who virtually did the same thing as NIN, but with a more organic musical sense (they were actually a band with instruments, rather than a dude at a computer).

These two artists definitively influenced a whole generation of musicians who are only now starting to pay homage to them.

Oh, and NSync was pretty good too.

You gotta respect tool and nin for making art with music. both are visionaries that rarely come around.

thought about it a lot and have to say Nirvana.
This is a band which will prob have a movie made about them in 20 years just like the doors did. Pearl Jam's 10 is amazing but all their stuff later on gets lower and lower.
Nirvana ended at the top. In Uetero and the MTV Unplugged gig they were at the highest they were ever at when Kirt killed himself. Kids in 20 years will discover that music just like a lot of us did with the Doors.
And that is my report on what I did on my summer vacation... I mean the best band of the 90's.

New NIN should be out in January or February. They also just released an anniversary edition of Downward Spiral with all kinds of extra stuff on it. It's also a hybrid disc that can be played in SACD format if you have the player...

Interesting poll! Given the choices listed I'd have to say its a toss up between Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins, but I think Pearl Jam just edges the Pumpkins out. HOWEVER, had STP been an option, I would have voted them hands down.

Soundgarden is actually my personal fav on the list, but in terms of being the *best* I think PJ and SP are a notch above the rest.

No competition...... TOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They have to be the most creative bands to come around in a long time. Take a look at their songs, they actually mean something. You can take Tool songs three different ways: literally, metaphorically, and if you can ever figure this one out, Tool's own meaning to the song. Who else takes hallucinogens to inspire their videos?

Second would be NIN. They have most of the same qualities of Tool but I like Tool's stlye better.

And third would be Nirvana. They would probably come in second had they lasted through the decade. Its a shame Cobain is no longer around. He spawned the Grudge era and has been a major influence on most rock bands of today. I got their box set With The Lights Out for Christmas. It has a bunch of unreleased songs, acoustic recordings, an different versions of other songs.

I personally think Mother Love Bone was the best. Andrew Wood was an amazing singer and songwriter. But as with many of the greats he OD'd and died. The remainder of the band went on to form Pearl Jam, and the group Temple of the Dog (a combo of Pearl Jam/Soundgarden) was a tribute to Andrew Wood...

My vote from that list would have to go to Metallica :thumbs2: .

I'm curious though, anyone listen to Megadeth? They should have been on that list, in the 90s they released Rust In Peace, Countdown to Extinction, Youthansia, and Crypitc Writings, all fantastic albums :thumbs2: .

You know metallica is one of my all time favorites. So is tool. I voted for tool because even though they had less output in the 90's (legal battles with record label) I believe musically they are the shiz... Aenima is pure gold in my book! That was my first tool cd and I quickly had to go get undertow, opiate, waited patiently for lateralus. With metallica I fell in love with ride the lightning and puppets and adapted to the musical changes that came from then on (excluding justice) close call but tool gets it!

I'm with you. Best Rock Band of my life time. Pre or Post 85!

In the 90's they released 3 of their best albums. They would have released more had not Neal Peart had to take a substantial amount of time away due to the loss of his wife to medical reasons and his daughter to an automobile incident.

Rush in the 90's: Roll the Bones, Counterparts, Test for Echo

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

I'm surprised noone has mentioned REM. I'd have bumped Tool, Alice in Chains, or NIN to make room. I'm not a huge fan of their politics, but musically they deserve a place on a poll like this.

REM in the 90's: Out of Time, Automatic for the People, Monster, New Adventures in Hi-Fi, Up.

.. but the 80's, IMO, had the best!

And as much as I hate to admit it, Hair Metal rocks! Def Leppard, White Lion, Great White, QueensRyche.. I can go on and on.

Also, I'll never get tired of New Wave. :buttrock:

I think, though I can't point to a specific albumn, that Nirvanah summarized the mood and feel for the 90s. I'd say the same thing about U2 for the 80s: their song "I still don't know what I'm looking for" summarized the decade perfectly.

The album that got me hooked on Rush! A friend played me Working Man from that album and by the end of the Peart drum solo I was hooked.

The "Rush in Rio" CD and DVD sets released last year are quality. My top four Rush albums (in no particular order) are Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Counterparts, and Roll the Bones. Every track on these four is gold.

Silverageguy - I'd never argue with the Who's contribution to music. Great band. Just not in my personal top three (Rush, Yes, Steely Dan). In 2004 I got to see both Rush and Yes so it was a good music year for me.

wktf - Nirvana broke up too close to the beginning of the 90's to be the band of the 90's. They did nothing for the entire last half a decade. Their contribution was in the inspiration to other bands. To be a band of a decade in my book implies you were in the hunt for most of the decade.

Why no REM or U2 for that matter? Sorry, I wanted the hard rock/metal/grunge bankds. REM and U2 aren'te in that category, and if I had included them I should have included Dave Matthews Band and Matchbox 20 as well. Too many bands.

I also couldn't please everybody with this list of 10. Yes, Megadeath, STP, and others could have been included. However, I was trying to go for variety. For my money, STP is just not as great as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, AIC or Soundgarden. Bush didn't make the list either, or Live for that matter.

Too many bands.

However, I am glad we got so much discussion on this.

All these bands rock! Five years into the new millenium, and who is the rock band of this decade? Lincoln Park is the only band that stand out to me right now.

This was a cool poll Bats...even though many bands were not there that people wanted, it definitely brought up a good conversation. If it came down to it, I would be voting for KISS, since they have been doing it for over 30 years and can still kick anyone's ass in the live show department (and they actually sing at their shows). I gotta tell you I think a few of these bands did their thing well in the 90s

musically it was an era full of eclectic genres and tastes... I admit I had a hard time with the "alternative" stuff... I hated Nirvanna and that genre. I don't deny the talents these bands had but I just like better sounding voices than Cobains fingernails on a cheese grater voice.

Soundgarden was not much better for me... but all of these bands were a breath of fresh air to the played out hair and I get the message... Two of my all time favorite bands were very strong in the 90s... Metallica and Tool. They still had that uncompromising break your rib type crunch I have always and will always still love with two voices that I enjoy lyrically. Maynard James Keenan on Aenima is one of the best performances I've listened to... and Hetfield was still singing about his demons in a way that didn't have me wanted to put and icepick in my ears like the ST Anger album did.

Someone else who was a bright spot here was Alice... for crying out loud... between Dirt and Facelift... grunge became a scary cool word. Haunting dual vocals from Stahley and Cantrell worked so well. Pearl Jam's first disc was also grunge that blew me away. It was the last disc the had to do that.... ah well...

rage was awesome too and I'm surprised you didn't swap STP for Korn here Mike... Korn didn't come until later in the mix and STP between the crunchy Core and the more bizarre yet equally good purple was rockin'

My answer will have to be Tool... it's only personal preference but with all of their weird claymation videos and the fact that they aren't afraid to use the base guitar as the lead so to speak just rocks...

You look at all the bands that are starting to come into the fray now... ask them how many of them lsitened and were influenced clearly by tool...the way the song has changes and a swing feel...

Chevelle
Breaking Benjamin
Earshot
and many more...

Korn was at least innovative, STP was along for the ride and the clostest thing to a pop band grunge had.

And I think Scott Weiland is a joke.

(sniff) Beautifully said. You can't get any more original than TOOL. They have to be the most famous underground band out there. I really like it when a band cares more about the music than the money. Thats why they created their own record label, because the one they were on before wanted them to sell out and start making crappy Nickelback type stuff like all the rest of the bands out there. Oh, and here's a bit of trivia, their guitarist, Adam Jones used to be a special effects artist. He helped create Slimer and the marshmallow man from Ghostbusters along with designing many of the dinosaurs from Jurassic Park. Can't wait for the new album which seems to have been pushed back to early next year.

Ok, I might Remove Korn from the poll if I redid it, and maybe even Rage, but no one else.
