Whats the oldest comic you have in your collection?

How did you come to own this book? Was it the first comic you ever purchased as a kid, or did you go back an buy it in your old age? :)

I think my oldest is Uncanny XMen #19, 1966, though Im not for certain. My next might be Blue Beetle #1 from Charlton Comics, 1967. Im not sure after that...

Defenders #10. it was still years later that I started to really collect comics. next oldest is probably #2 and so on.

I imagine my current oldest if JIM 83 or ASM 2. I previously owned a very beat copy of Sub-Mariner 1 which I traded. Probably should have kept it just for the cool factor.

I am interested in getting a Captain America 1, so that likely will become my oldest. I have yet to fabricate the plan as to how I will get it and how much I will spend to get one.

Most of my older stuff are issues I bought for my holiday decorations...Action 105 (Feb. 1947), Adventure 161 (Feb. 1947), Batman 33 (Feb/Mar 1946), Comic Cavalcades 20 (April/May 1947), Sensation Comics 38 (Feb 1945), etc. I also have some other random issues of old DC stuff, but I'm pretty sure that Sensation 38 is my oldest.

The vast majority of my older collection, though, is Marvel stuff. I have an almost-complete set of Avengers (missing 1, 5, and a few assorted issues late in the initial run when I was buying sporadically), an almost-complete set of Amazing Spider-Man (missing AF15, 1, 9, 14, 18, and again a few issues from the mid-90s when I lost interest for a while...), a near-complete set of X-Men (missing 1-4, a few between 10 and 20, and a few when it was in reprints for a while), lots of early DD, FF, and Hulk, lots of Tales to Astonish, Tales of Suspense, and Strange Tales, etc.

The oldest I have ever bought off the rack was in the early or mid 70's, could not tell you which one was first though. Avengers #120 (first ed) or Superboy #209 (with Karate Kid and PP on the cover). I know I was a fan of X-men though before it was cool to like them.

Now I have stuff older then that by far. Some WW2 stuff, none are in great shape however. Some old Star Trek, some Dell.

I have Uncanny X Men 3, Iron Man 5, Avengers 6, Amazing Spider Man 41 and Daredevil 14 as my oldest. I have the complete run of Uncanny from 110 on and am only missing a total 40 issues from having them all, have all the Wolverine series, a few Batman and Superman issues from back in the day.

Amazing Fantasy #15... got it for $5 at Acme Book Store here in Chi-Town back around '68... purchases of missing issues between Amazing Spider-Man #1 and #67 were also done at this GREAT used comic store back then... any other old-time Chi-Towners remember this store located on North Clark Street off of Hubbard that was run by this chick named Sam LaChapelle (she actually had a brass plaque identifying herself as a comicologist!)... and she was assisted by a creepy-looking old guy named Noah who looked like he was a Steve Ditko-drawn old man come to life (we used to call him Beetle-Brain... in fact, now that I think about it, he kinda looked like the Vulture)... all of my Amazings that I bought from them ran between .50 and $7.50... and I STILL actually have the issues that I got from Sam... to this day, thru good and bad, I still collect Amazing and have the entire run... they ain't all in mint shape, but I've never considered sellin' 'em, even to this day... they're just my collection and they're for my personal enjoyment... :thumbs2:...

I don't think the cons are great places to pick up key books anymore...the prices all seem so high. The only benefit is that you can see them in person before you buy, but the cost hovers so close to guide (or above, in some cases last year at San Diego!) that it's just not worth it when you can buy the same issue in the same grade for potentially a lot less on eBay.

I dropped $400 or so last year at SDCC on books that later on I figured I could have gotten for maybe $300 on eBay. And I was at the time looking for Avengers #4, and saw nothing under $200, and that was for a FR copy at best. Most decent-looking copies I saw were $800-$1K or more. And I managed to find a great-looking copy (clean edges, little wear, only a slight browning near the UR cover edge) for $200 on eBay just a while ago.

At the con? With the exception of one, no. They were graded, but not officially. That's what I mean with the cons--at SDCC, anyway, everything seems jacked-up--probably so they can drop the prices by half on the last day and still come away getting what they want.

It's not my oldest comic (I've got some Justice League comics from the mid-60s), but my favorite old comic is Avengers King-Size Special # 2, with the Cap, the Wasp, Goliath, Hawkeye and the Black Panther squaring off against Thor, the Silver Age Wasp, Giant-Man, Iron Man and the Hulk, on a beautiful John Buscema cover. That dropped my jaw when I saw it at the supermarket in 1968, and I bought it again as a back issue.
