View Full Version : Favourite Game ever?

Whats everyones favourite game ever? I'll let you have 2 choices - 1 newer game, and one old skool game (as its not really a fair to compare old and new).
My favourite newer game has to be Ico on the PS2. It had bags of atmosphere, and was just a beautiful game alround. The fact that you had to protect Yorda, rather than just go through the game on your own, raised it to another level and was emotionally engaging.
My favourite older game is 3d Deathchase on the ZX Spectrum from about 1984. You had to ride a motorbike through woods and shoot at the bad guys-each time you went up a level, the woods became thicker and thicker, it was like the speeder bike chase in Return of the Jedi-amazing game! It was a quick game. and sometimes you would just be "in the zone" and would be weaving in and out of the trees like you just knew where the next one would be.

The first game I got hooked on and played endlessly was Dune by Westwood Studios. Man that was a great game at the time.

I believe Dune was the First RTS wasn't it?
My picks are Pitfall on the Atari and Ghost Recon on PC/X-Box.

The first game I ever got obsessed with was the original Final Fantasy for Nintendo. I played this game for 8-10 hour periods every day over Christmas vacation and could not get enough. I guess that will be my favorite old school game even though I was also hooked on Tron Deadly Discs for Intellivision II.
My favorite newer game over the last few years would have to be Devil May Cry.
It's not the greatest game, as the engine was somewhat dated when it was released, but my favorite is Icewind Dale 2 from Bioware/Black Isle Studios.

One of the greatest games to paly amongst friends, but I can't rate it as the greatest game ever simple because the reason it was so great was that skill really did not play into it.

This is a cool thread though, I think my favorite games were Asteroids, Pitfall, and Centapede. Then when Nintendo came along, I really liked Link, and Metroid. My absolute all time favorite was Betrayal at Krondor. Simply the best RPG ever created. It set the bar for all CRPGs because it was literally like being sucked inside a great book where you could affect the outcome. The story, combat system, magic system and environments were so well done. I still have this and have thought many times of making a DOS box simply to play this game.
My favorite console game was Super Metroid--Just an absolutely amazing game that kept me saying I just have to get that one more power up.
X-Com--best strategy game with some minor RPG aspects in that your soldiers got better as they survived missions.
Freedom Force--a great squad level superhero game where they perfectly captured the Steranko, Kirby era artwork and the Stan Lee dialogue.
Halo--Great first person shooter
I am sure I will think of others later but those are some of my favorites

I loved the original 2d Prince of Persia, which had great animation using rotoscoping. Similarly, I also loved the French games Another World and Flashback (they may have had different names in the States) which used similar animation techniques I believe.

Yeah, the US version had a bug that let you climb up using a diagonal jumping glitch. They removed this from the PAL version, so the only way to get up there is to increase your stamina meter by completing the game 3 or 4 times and eating lots of white tailed lizards.

GTA : San Andreas
This game still blows me away today the sheer size of it is just unbelievable. There is so much to see and do you don`t have to touch the missions in the main game and still get hours and hours of fun from it. It`s such a believable world too they got every detail nailed even down to the smallest back alley, awesome awesome game :buttrock: :buttrock: :thumbs2:
My all time favorites are the Ninja Turtles and X-Men arcade games. Does anyone else remember arcade games?
The King's Island theme park in Ohio used to have the double screen version of the X-Men game that took up to, I think, 6 players at once. I wasted a lot of quarters on that game. I prefered it over the rides.
the arcade in tri county mall had a double screen too
