You think so? The old OVA is pretty bad but the new TV series is quite good and is very faithful to Takaya's vision. Infact Takaya worked very closely with the staff of the new TV series and did most of the screenplay. Not only that but Takaya also retconned a few things as well. Things he felt he didn't do very well in the manga the first time.
So the TV series IMO and the creator's opinion does the series justice fine.

Okay, Diebuster, so you guys are talking about the giant robot Gunbuster...
I finished the Diebuster already, I don't like the robot/character design at first but it gorws on me fairly quick.
The first one is still a better series but Diebuster is also one of the better animes I've seen for years.
The ending is...stirking I say, as shocking as the first one.
Another excellent series anyway!
And I quite like the opening song.

I'm not a big anime fan but have seen many. Two I highly recommend are:
Giant Robo (the best IMO)
The Big O
Watching Giant Robo is like watching the Marvel Universe come to life. Super powered good guys versus super powered bad guys doing their thing. Some of the best action sequences I've seen in anime. If you love Ninja Scroll, you'll love this even more.

Probably the Greatest short Anime film ever produced. Able to convey such a Powerful Message in only a half hour. To think it was done on some guy's power Mac. Makoto Shinkai is one of the best directors in the industry.

Gaogaigar OVA is way too awesome, the ending gets me all the time...:bawling:
Gaogaigar actually belongs to a lineage of anime in Japan called Yusha(the brave).
The very first one was Exkiaser, the second one was my all time favorite, Yusha Dagun, totally fantastic and there're quite a few other Yusha animes.
Sadly, Gaogaigar is the last of this Yusha series...

The Voice Form the Distant Star is sure awsome.
Just an interesting trivia, Makoto Shinkai is not only the director, he's also....everything!
From character design to sketching, from panels to animation process and all, he did that whole 25 minutes anime ALL BY HIMSELF!!
Of course the music is from someone else but he did the animation part all by himself, very talented.
And his second work is awesome too, same music artist as the Distant Star, beautiful music.
The name is "The Place Promied In Our Early Days", check it out if you have a chance.

If you really want to get into some classic old school stuff pick up the Gigantor sets--man I loves me some classic anime and it don't get much more classic than Gigantor. And it has one of THE great theme songs.
I also join in to recommend Giant Robo and Big O.

Tenjo Tenge, Ikki Tousen was good too with fabulous chic & fighting scenes. always like vampire stuff like Trinity Blood, Blood+ & Vampire Hunter D. Wish there is a series on DarkStalkers. New Robotech movie brought back some old memories.

Tenjo Tenge, Ikki Tousen sure have nice characters but they're a bit...pointless to me, I enjoyed the characters and fight scenes but I don't really feel the soul in those works...
And just let you know that Trinity Blood, Blood+, Vampire Hunter D and God, Save Our King are all...female titles...
Of course you can watch it even you're a man but they were designed for female audience group, so I personally don't have those on my list...
But my sister like those titles a lot and she has even read the original novel of "God, Save Our King" before it made its way into anime.

Don't worry, there's nothing wrong with your sexual orientation!
Just those titles are more for female due to the nature of the characters and the plot but they're still suitable for male audience.:)
That stupid sword in the "God, Save Our King" is quite funny actually...

Tenjho Tenge is one of mya favorites. It's actually quite deep if you read the manga and a Martial Artist. I can admit that Ogure makes th story very confusing and complicated but all will be revealed in time.
Love Ikkitousen as well, Ryofu is my woman.
Current series Dragon Destiny is not bad so far but I am curious as to how much of the manga it will cover.
