This happened last friday but it's too awesome to not let you people know about it. The gorilla escaped by jumping over a 13 foot wide water barriere. There were 4 people hurt, 1 woman was severely injured with over 100 bitewounds, a broken arm and a broken wrist. Sounds bad huh? But this same woman came to the zoo, 3 times a week for that same gorilla that attacked her. Check here (http://youtube.com/watch?v=dWMs6ufaxa4) how she's acting to the beast, all smiling, staring in his eyes and ticking on the window. A 'smile' means you're showing agression towards ANY monkey, staring him directly in his eyes means disrespect. Now this is a silverback, 400 pounds of muscle, the leader of the pack.

Look here to see the beast; http://youtube.com/watch?v=bT5H3dm9UdA

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -- A 400-pound gorilla escaped from his enclosure and ran amok in a Rotterdam zoo Friday, biting one woman, dragging her around, and causing panic among dozens of visitors before he was finally subdued, officials and a witness said.

The Diergaarde Blijdorp zoo was evacuated and the 11-year-old gorilla, named Bokito, was eventually contained in a restaurant within the park, police spokeswoman Yvette de Rave said.

Four people were injured, including the woman who was bitten, zoo director Ton Dorrestijn said.

Bokito was shot with a sedative dart and recaptured, said zoo spokeswoman Lilian Jonkers, but she couldn't say what his condition was. It was not immediately clear how he managed to climb the high stone walls surrounding his enclosure.

"He got over the moat, which in itself is remarkable, because gorillas can't swim," Dorrestijn said. "He got onto a path for visitors and started running and went at full speed through tables and diners at the Oranje restaurant."

A witness, Robert de Jonge, told NOS radio that he didn't see the gorilla escape but began following it and tried to help after he saw people running and screaming that the animal had grabbed a woman.

"I saw the beast running through the park with a woman behind him, him grabbing her forearm," De Jonge said.

At a distance of around 30 yards, he saw the gorilla lie down near the woman and then heard her scream.

"He bit her, or I think he bit her, because when he stood up his mouth was covered in blood," De Jonge said.

He said he then stopped to tell arriving police what had happened and ran with them as they traced the gorilla to a nearby restaurant terrace.

The zoo was packed with visitors as many Dutch took advantage of a national holiday Thursday to make a long weekend.

"Everyone was in panic, running away, screaming, wailing, screaming kids running around, I don't know what all, kids without parents -- it was a total drama," De Jonge said.

Children cowered in their parents' arms as the gorilla loped past.

People tried to hide inside the restaurant and were trying to bar the door, but fled as the gorilla approached, De Jonge said. Bokito then punched through the glass door and ran inside.

"They were all in panic -- the animal, too, I mean -- and all the people ran outside the restaurant, and zoo personnel were running up and they were able to keep the animal inside by barricading the doors with garden furniture and things," he said.

De Jonge said he later saw the woman "covered in blood," but walking unaided.

Jeeeez. I'd try to escape too if I were confined to a zoo like that. The enclosure in the first video looks like a prison cell. :peoples:

The Rotterdamn zoo has a large outdoor enclosure.
That is simply the indoor area.

DESCRIPTION:

The gorilla exhibit, part of Rotterdam's Africa area, consists of a large island for the gorillas and a smaller island where colobus monkeys are housed. Both islands are accessible to the colobus monkeys by way of swinging ropes. The existing indoor holding building (built in the 1960s) was maintained. Fortunately, this building is low to the ground and has a roof planting, so it is relatively unobtrusive. The gorillas are displayed on the outdoor island year-round. An existing, historic stable had to remain on the site and was remodelled to look like an African hut. It serves as a viewing area for visitors. There are three viewing areas around the island, carefully placed so that there is no cross-viewing and no view of the entire island from any one spot.
The island is lush and green with high grasses and plants. To create a natural appearance of the outdoor enclosure, a water moat or a wall of wooden poles form the barrier between visitors and animals. The wooden pole fence is equipped with electrical wire to prevent climbing. The moat is 4 meters in width, with a 45 degree angle so that, gradually, a depth of 1.80 meters is reached. Because gorillas may go in the water but cannot swim, a fence was placed in the center of the moat. This fence is electrically wired just above the water level. For additional safety, a 1 meter-wide swamp area, with bog plantings, was added to the width of the moat on the animal side of the moat. The water level in the moat is divided into two levels. A water pump keeps the water circulating which creates two small waterfalls. The water is aerated with a system that preserves water quality during the summer and keeps the water from freezing in the winter. Therefore, the gorillas can use the outdoor enclosure year-round. In order to encourage the gorillas to spend as much time as possible in the outdoor area, heated hiding caves and much vegetation was added for shelter from sun, rain, and cold, and a special enrichment-feeding program was developed to give the gorillas access to food at all times and to keep the island unpredictable (see "Management").

Here in San Diego, we had a rather famous Orang "Ken Allen" that was rather good at escape from his outdoor enclosure.
Even unscrewing bolts and learning how to unlatch things.

It`s people that should be in cages the animals should roam free.
