Threw this together in a half an hour last night gang. Going for more of the John Byrne beast instead of the modern one with the sideburns etc...

More to come and I hope you like. It is gonna be really cool when I am done. :D

Like I said it was a half an hour so obviously there is much to do.

Thanks Dannomite and Rickalicious!!!

Angel Needs a pal. I was telling a couple of the fellas that I was putzing all weekend. Sculpting but not really with a direction while I wait for the wire mesh for Batman's cape. On a whim I decided "wouldn't beast be a cool character to sculpt? and the way he looked more back in the Byrne days?" I melted the material I was saving for batman's cape and ordered a new block of Castilene and went to town putting Hank together. He'll be bigger, he'll be hairier, but my goal was to capture the character as quickly if not quicker than I did Batman and I think I have.

You guys are too kind:) Thanks mi amigos...

It WILL be good work when I'm done. stay tuned... it'll be fun! I want to roughly put 5 pieces together this year for a portfolio. 2 DC, 2 marvel, 1 something else...

I will continue though to work and practice and bump one piece for another here and there... I have a long list of characters I want to do...

Claudio that's Hilarious. It does have quite the connotation to it:) Rick is the man!!!

As for Castilene??? I can't give it up now. What's up with that? I tried to work with sculpey this weekend and I couldn't do it!!! I suck with super Sculpey :bawling:

As long as I can get quick enough with castilene, I guess I'll be okay!

I don't wanna give up on sculpey yet. It looks so cool in photos and stuff... Ah well I'll keep trying.

I want this beast to almost appear like he is a gymnast on a pommel horse, while moving similar to an ape (on his hands). we'll see if I can translate!!!

Claudio. Isn't that the stuff that is used for action figures??? Isn't that even harder that Castilene???

There is a bunch of stuff I wanna branch out and try eventually! Chavant, Magicsculpt, Azbro...

But I think I will honestly keep coming back to the green mistress! I just don't have enough control and gentle enough hand to work with the pink lady right now. I hope I will though... Tony will kill me if I give up on SS!!!

Excellant job Keith! This will be awesome!

Whats the deal withSuper Sculpey? I tried using it again this week and i was like what the hell! It's too soft! So I guess I'll stick with casty. I think they must be making it softer. At least the batches I'm getting. Oh well. Keep up the awesome work dude! For a base, maybe some twisted metal or a rock. Perhaps a steel girder? Whatever it is it will look sweet. Good luck with all that fur. :)

Claudio. Isn't that the stuff that is used for action figures??? Isn't that even harder that Castilene???

Yes - that's the one!

Its great 'cause I rough out the figure in Hard castilene to a point where if I squint my eyes it looks done. Then I make a mold using alginate and cast my azbro pieces. Using a foredom wax pen I go a finish it up.

the great part is that it won't melt in your hands or soften up at all! You can even drill this stuff and the detail you can achive is incredible! Not to emntion being able to sand it as though it was plastic (it feels a lot like working with plastic..well sort of).

I find if I'm doing a sculpt in 1/6th scale or smaller of a female I HAVE to use azbro (or similar carving wax) as otherwise I can't get the castilene smooth enough. the most important thing about girl sculpts is that they are smooth.

On the other hand sometimes I will simply stay with castilene if I'm sculpting a male figure especially if I want him to look rugged and even "gritty" (like my Cable bust) as the texture in castilene adds to the affect...

On other occasions I'll use both Castilene and Azbro and make the flsh parts with Azbro and the clothing using Castilene to take advantage of each materials textures or ability to smooth...

Man this is a long post!

Claudio - Thanks man! thanks for psoting about Azbro. I like the idea you can sand it to smooth. I will give that wax a try eventually.

How do you like working with a wax pen compared to heating your tools? How small of nibs do they have? Also do they have big nibs to smooth down your sculpt and carve it? I have thought about investing in one since I feel compelled to use wax exclusively. What kind do you have?

Once you go wax you never go back. :) I've tried SS and it isnt the same as it used to be. It's way to soft.

Thanks John, Rich, King, Claudio...

John you are in the same SS boat I am huh? It's weird! I've gone all SS challenged!!!

You know what could be a really cool base for Beast to get him to a much larger height??? He is using the right arm to propel himself/ hold himself up. But he could possibly doing it on a Sentinel head... That might be wicked and something Perna would enjoy. Did you get your new torch yet John??? I used candles at first too and they really worked. when I started to use a lamp and torch I had to get used to them burning much hotter...

Rich. It really is coming more natural now. With each piece comes more speed and a bit better understanding. I will be anxious to see where I am after a year of sculpting is behind me. Hopefully I can turn some heads.

Claudio. I posted your measurements up as promised at the clubhouse in your thread... I think we were both a little off!!! THe males are roughly 10.25-10.75" tall for 6'1" male...

Hey John,

i like working with the wax pen a lot to tell you thetruith - it handles a lot better for detailing beause you can apply very minute applications of wax. They have a variety of nibs to choose from from very fine to spoon like spatulas.

i have a foredom wax pen which is really compact and inexpensive although very good: $189.00 USD. The tips are also a good price at $9.95 each. the nice thing about the Foredom wax pen is that the tips can be filled and sanded or shaped according to how you want seeing as they are made from high quality brass.

The tips are also inexpensive so they don't cost much to replace or buy in order to modify them. you can get them here: http://www.sculpt.com (look under "wax tools").

Hope this helps!

Keith, you're going to be one of those sculptors like Tony and John C. , who can wip pieces outt left and right. I'm going to have to send some boys to rough you guys up a bit, making us slower sculptors look bad.

Great start keith.!

sculpey has great uses though, like when you're stressed and need a piece of clay to roll and knead in your hands. Feels good. For actual sculpting i am totally lost. I can't handle it gently enough.

claudio is on the path I want to get on. Casting stuff into wax from castilene. I think I definately will do that for my next small scale piece. Actually the wax of choice is Toxic Papas homemade stuff. Awesome!!! Flows through a waxer much better than azbro. I bought some from him and he even tinted it castilene green so I can mix the two when needede for different parts of the sculpture. Ralphs the man!!

Kdawg59

Claudio knows the yeti!!!:)

Ray when you refer to yourself as "slower sculptor's like me " everyone else should read it as I do...

"better, kickass, too talented to be anything less than Michaelangelo reincarnated, see you later teaching, hello choice-o project, sculptor's like me..."

I think I am in the same boat with sculpey now you dog you... Ever since that night I talked to you about castilene... my sculpey days were numbered. I have tried it again, but I suck. I have no touch with it. I like to carve and I can't shape. I like to pick it up and rotate a sculpt and to do that with SS I have to bake it and then realize how wrong it is and grind it all off... If I can get fast enough at capturing the "fluid sketch" it just makes more sense for me to use the wax. I too would like to try some azbro... Or even eventually Toxic Pops stuff.. Tony is turning over in his grave that the darkside has pulled me in... but I just can't help it!!! I SUCK with Super Sculpey. There I've said it!!!

I just had my photshoot with my Buddy Joe!!! Poor dude did squats last night and chest tonight... He could contort like Beast to save his soul. 40 shots of him though and hopefully it will be all I need to make the difference. great suggestion Ray on the live reference. I do it with illustration all the time... why shouldn't I for sculpting..

Bullseye... Me diplomatic??? Maybe. I'm a mod scum after all!

So far its the technique I'm most comfortable with: roughing out with Castilene then casting and refining in toy wax...

I'm going to stay with straght castilene on larger stuff though and there is no need to use the toy wax unless its smaller scale. Still I would use Toy wax on 1/6th scale depending on the chracter as well... if I want a bit of gritty look to the piec then I will finish with just Castilene...

Man I'm tired...not being coherent...ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Kdawg59

Our goal here is to have people branch out a bit. That's why I say my sculpts belong here. Right now every other sculptor's work should be here too if they are posting it. We are mulling over making it standard that if you are a sculptor there is one section to post in... Fans can and will inevitably post stuff in the BD section because they want to call out to RB to produce it, but if one sculptor does it, then everyone can and the BD section becomes a constant job interview...

People should venture out of the BD section. Although it is obviously the biggest draw here, there are some really sophisticated and cool sections set-up! You know what I'm talking about mr. Sideshow Cave Troll:)

As Keith already mentioned i think its almost a bit "rude" to post sculpts in the BD forums as its almost like saying "Hey produce me!".

Don't get me wrong I'm not upset if people do it I just don't feel comfortable msyself posting my stuff on someone else's forum. I'm sure if the sculpt is nice people will take notice and post it there... can't stop what other people do! I think the fans have every right to showcase soemthing they like an try to get it produced. I just don't think its the sculptors place to do so. Otherwise the BD forums become a job/promo forum where in fact they are supposed to be about BD's products...

Believe us when we say B-

we love it when you guys like our work and want to see it produced. It is the equivalent of us sculpting well for people to like pieces we create. Claudio is right though in that it just feels weird for us to self promo and post it there when there is a set section for it here... In the old forum we didn't have that comfort and so people posted sculpts there. It actually led to work for two really great sculptors in Ray and Erick. Hell it even worked for John Cleary to an extent... I don't know if Randy first saw your post of it or if John sent it over...

It's hard to explain and all I can do is speak for myself when I say if you wanna post stuff there as a fan... go for it. When sculptor's wanna post it should be here.

Heres the story on Spidey,

I did this piece as a project for fun. I had absolutely no intention of shopping it to be produced. It was simply meant to be the first superhero sculpt for my portfolio. I posted a couple of early pics on the old bowen site but the thread was deleted in less than a few hours by the forum admin. They didnt want artists showcasing work. I wanted Randy to see it and give me some constructive crits. He never saw it as far as I knew.

So I kept working on Spidey and about a month later decided to try and emailing the Bowen website. I didnt even know if Randy would see my email. I sent a few emails with pics and one day out of the blue he emailed and to my utter surprise he loved it and wanted to produce it. Problem was my sculpt was too big! I told him I would resculpt it smaller scale with his statues and I did. I then sent pics again and he still wanted to produce it! I was thrilled beyond excitement. And thats how Spidey came about. It was all just by luck of the draw. I created a sculpt and had alot of fun doing it and Randy saw the potential in it and offered to produce it.

My Wendigo came much about the same way. I sculpted it for fun showed Randy pics and he gave me some constructive crits and really loved it also. If Phase 3 happens hoefully it will also be produced.

I want to sculpt professionally like some of the greats, Cipriano, Villafane, Bergholtz,Bruckner etc and I'm hoping my Spiderman is just a start. I am going to bust my butt trying to achieve my goals and just have fun sculpting and do my best.

I hope to make some nice progress on his piece tonight. I took 40 photos last night of my model... He was a trooper trying to bend and contort like the Beast is not an easy task...

I will carve and bend and get it going!!!
