Peter Hume, Canadian wrestling champ, dies at 54

MECHANICVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — Peter Hume, a Canadian national wrestling champion in the 1970s who had a bit part in the movie “Meatballs,” died after he was stricken at his home. He was 54.
Hume weighed more than 400 pounds when he died Tuesday in Mechanicville, 17 miles north of Albany, the Saratoga County coroner said. The corner did not elaborate on the cause of death.
Hume, 6-foot-6, was the national university wrestling champion for the 1977-78 season in the super heavyweight division for Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, said Greg Mathieu, executive director of the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association. Hume also played football at the university.
Hume was a football coach and teacher Schuylerville Junior-Senior High School. His death was announced Tuesday at the school, and Friday’s classes were canceled so students can attend his funeral.
“The whole school was crying,” 10th-grader Jenifer Wolin told the Saratogian newspaper.
Hume appeared in the 1979 Bill Murray comedy “Meatballs” that was filmed in Canada. He played a character called “The Stomach.”
Hume and his son, Sean B. King, opened Hume Piano in Mechanicville, where they refurbished and resold pianos.
He is also survived by his wife, Karzi G. McCallum Hume.
