What do you think is the Creepiest Horror Movie Mood Music /Sound Effects?

Here is what I think when I try to decide: Is the movie less scary without the music?

For this reason, Halloween gets my number #1 with Friday the 13th is a close second?

The JAWS theme for me.

Hallowe'en gets my vote: a stunning soundtrack, which I have just ripped to my MP3 player in time for All Hallows Eve! The Exorcist's Tubular Bells would be up there though. My near-three year old niece is terrified of the Jaws music.

Other worthy mentions are Sixth Sense (and for that matter Stir of Echoes) for spooky music and Scream for more action horror.

I'm a huge horror movie and movie score fan (the Saw soundtrack is next on my shopping list) - music plays a key part in any horror film.

I aways thought the absence of sound was more spooky than a theme.

I've gone with Jaws. Surely the most memorable two notes in film soundtrack history. The movie would not have half the impact it does without it.

True enough, I've always found Charlie Chaplin far more sinister than funny...

Halloween, by far. The sound makes the movie.

The Shining also has quite an effective score - no melody as such, but certainly adds to the atmosphere that something's not right at the Overlook Hotel.

"The Birds" gets me.

When the shot of the old guy with his eyes pecked out comes on.

I still close my eyes.

The Halloween theme is the creepiest, hands down. I'd vote the Exorcist theme No. 2.

Any Italian Horror film. Dario Argento's Suspiria comes to mind.

Yeah, I was just thinking about that song, and then something fell and hit the floor in the next room and scared the bejeezus out of me. :bawling:

My favorite horror soundtrack is the score for Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula.
I highly recommend it. You'll be very pleased.

Check out the soundtrack to Hellraiser II : Hellbound. Some of the spookiest orchestral music ever. I believe it won some award also.

Out of the choices presented I easily voted for Halloween but I think my favorite would be John Murphy's score from 28 Days/Weeks Later. A very dark, powerful, atmospheric mix that I find quite haunting. I know these films aren't old enough to be viewed as classic yet but its currently my favorite horror soundtrack.

Yeah thats a great score by Goblin. They also did Romero's Dawn of the Dead which was great as well.

Couldn't agree more. The Omen music scared the hell out of me. There's something just chilling about church choir music when dealing with evil.

True, the Omen soundtrack is also great. Hallowe'en, Exorcist, Omen, Dracula, Amityville, they are all on my Hallowe'en mix CD.

something to remember about Halloween is that, carpenter composed the music for it himself - as he did for the majority of his films

To date, if I watch it, I still get scared. It sends chills and goosebumps!!!

John Carpenter's The Thing has a great atmospheric score too. Just watched it on HD-DVD last week for the first time in a few years. Love that film.
