I'm looking to buy a 40" LCD TV and wanted to know which brands are the best and which have problems. I know a lot of people on this forum have LCD TV's, so any suggestions?

I like Vizio and Samsung.

But, Vizio for the quality and price.

Samsung, Pioneer or the new Sony XBR.

You can't go wrong with Samsung, Sharp & Toshiba. Bang for the buck Vizio & Viewsonic. My sister has a Vizio and it's great and I bought a Toshiba for my mom and it's awesome too.

Consider what you are using it for before going for a specific brand. If you are going to use it for gaming look for one with a fast response time in the specs. Also check your viewing anlge. Cheaper sets lose light at shallower viewing angles when compared with better quailty sets.

Hope that helps.

I have a 37'' Vizio that I bought from Buy.com for $500 at one point. It has very bright colors and is probably better than my Panasonic 24'' LCD in the bedroom and my 65'' Panasonic LCD in my movie room.

VIZIOs are great, and cheap [at COSTCO] too!

I have a 46" Sony Bravia XBR2 that I'm extremely pleased with. It has a wonderful picture with HD input and pretty good image quality with SD input. Halo 3 on the XBox 360 looks fantastic!!

Additionally, the thing looks good just sitting there.

Best LCD on the market right now is the Samsung 81 Series however it is not good for off angle viewing.

After that I would suggest either the Sony XBR4 or the Samsung 71series

Also Samsung sets have glossy screens so if you cant handle the glare either get an XBR4 or a 61 series Samsung.

Stay away from the new Sharps because of banding and stay away from the new Toshibas because they have allot of black crush and they just aren’t that good for the money.

The best bang for you’re buck right now is the 4065f or 4061F from Samsung, they just came out last April and then the 71 and81 series came out this august so the 65 is going for dirt cheap right now. However the XBR 4\71series are better TVs, the 65 will get you the best price for performance and believe me this TV out do's any Toshiba\sharp or last generation Sony tvs(xbr2s).

My recommendation is if you don’t mind the off angle viewing get the 81series most expensive but light-years ahead in technology it’s got 500000:1 contrast ratio and it produces better blacks than any other TVs. If you care about off angle viewing which I probably wouldn’t because im the only one who watches my tv :D, then get the XBR4 it’s a bit better than the 71series but its more expensive and it doesn’t have a glossy screen. Option C if you’re looking for the best bang for you’re buck 65series all the way or if you want to stay away from glare the 61 series is just as good.BTW the off angle vieweing is only bad on the 81series all other sammy sets are just fine in that matter.

also:
XBR2 have clouding issues
XBR4 have minor clouding issues i would pay too much attention to they are hardly noticeable.

I have had nothing but bad luck with Sony sets in the past so I just can't buy their product any more.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was thinking about the Sony XBR but it cost like $1000-$2000 more than other LCD TV's. I was thinking of getting this one, anyone got it?

I would take a look at the sharp aquos. I have the 46" and it works great, I have been told it rivals the sony but for a better price. Check buydig.com and newegg.com you will get a good deal through those sites. You can save quite a bit of quid.

I'm Australian, dollars here mate. I would have to buy from a local shop, buying a TV from another country would be too much of a hassle, a lot of stuff to worry about.

No disrepect on the quid comment, i know Australia uses a dollar, Im in the states and i just use that as an expression. I still say the sharp, i just went TV shopping and spent a lot of time looking at all brands. Obviouly i bought the sharp because i felt it had the most bang for the buck. I can tell you visio is a decent set but from what i was told they get returned alot.
