Yes, many people in Eastern Canada do want an 80 cent dollar which is good for them. Guess what? What's good for exporters is bad for importers. If 'Canadians' can't figure out how to make money by being competitive with an at-par dollar, those companies deserve to go under.

The high dollar is a good thing. It will force Canadians and the government to be more competitive across the board. Retailers will be forced to lay off staff if they can't cut prices due to high taxes and wages they pay compared to the border states: That scenario will force the feds and provinces to cut the taxes that business has to pay in this country. And if we can keep a conservative-minded gov't in power, maybe the average taxpayer can get a really good break on the taxes they pay. People are voting for low taxes and prices in droves as they wait in line for hours to drive over the border. Things are going to have to change here--less gov't spending especially on special interest groups. Socialism is too expensive!!!

Sorry to hear your pain and yes socialism is too expensive because you never run out of things the government should do. Socialism already broke the Soviets and the US had better be careful or we'll go down that same road.

 socialism broke the soviets I thought it was communism. America is pretty far from a scoialist country if we were I would have health care and wouldn't have to spend $200 a month so I could breathe

No, it was stupidest leftest gov'ts & their wacky socialist ideas. Sound good on paper, but rarely do they work out in real life. Thats why I thank GOD that we in Alberta have had the GOOD SENSE to elect a good conservative provincial govt for the last 30-35 years. We still have a very bitter taste in our mouths from the National Energy Plan ( a liberal idea!  ) of the late 1970s/early 1980s that crippled our economy.

And we have to pay for health care in Alberta. Its $44 a month.

more or less, is it not 4.5 litres = 1 gallon?

If that is true, we are paying (In Alberta) $4.32 a gallon. Keep in mind this is one of the lowest prices in Canada.

You guys were happy to take Fed handouts as part of equalization across but not so good at sharing when you became a "have" province.

Not being funny, man, but if you were Ontario most of the benefits you had from resources would've been forcibly claimed by the Feds by now. And you definitely wouldn't have gotten that tax refund.

$3.55 a gallon & we are the most inexpensive at the pumps.

Alberta pays out so much in equalization payments it is not even funny!

Because our province has no debt & no sales tax. And we make boatloads of $$$$ from our Oil.

But you realize that higher gas prices eventually lead to higher prices for just about everything sold, right? Unless you're Amish.

Then people should sell their gas guzzling cars & invest in smart cars. Yet what do I see & hear? SUVs are still selling in adequate numbers. People don't want to make personal sacrifices.

I agree with you here. Except that when the Loonie hit par and Canadians were complaining about the price of vehicles GM and a bunch of other comapnies (I think Chrysler was one too) had the biggest incentives on their trucks and SUVs. This is non-sensical, and does nothing to make poeple change their habits because smaller cars are still way too expensive. As are hybrids right now. Also, have you seen the price of a SMART Car?

I think if people see better prices for smaller, but equally featured cars (i.e. decent acceleration, comfort etc) they will buy them.
