Yeah, I've been watching these closely lately. It seems there is a group of international (non US) bidders who have been running up some of the prices lately. There's a WiKi out there that is up around $2000, if it hasn't gone over. Crazy.

I, like many others, wish I had gotten into these when they first came out. I decided not to get into collecting them and now I kinda wish I had.
Do you think in 5-10 years these will be at more reasonable prices than they are now or will their value hold up long term?

That's a good question. I think most of the Balrogs are now in the hands of the collectors who won't let them go, especially if they paid big money for them. That leaves less and less for the avg. schmo, and I would bet they hold their value for at least a few years. The furor might die down....at least until the Hobbit is released.

Well,

It hit around $3800 around this time last year.

Who knows? These things can be cyclical in nature. Look at the Bowen pieces, especially the Batman on Gargoyle.

But the LOTR generates so much interest and has such a large fan base these very well could maintain their value. The Balrog Flame of Udun release sure hasn't hurt the original Balrog at all.

I would guess those who have been paying the hefty prices would like to see them retain their value and those who want one are hoping they come down. As fewer find their way into the secondary market that could offset any loss in interest and keep the value up.

Time will tell.
