Last night my 12-yr old son and I were walking our two golden retrievers. The walk we do is about 2 miles and he challenged me to a Marvel villain naming contest. The rules simply were no repeating villains already mentioned, we take turns alternating between us, and the loser was the one who ultimately gets stumped.

We went nearly the entire two miles trading off villain names and, finally, he cried "uncle" about 2-3 houses away from our home. The kid proved he'd been reading my Marvel Masterworks (with my permission) by calling out names like The Trapster, Hydra, Kang the Conqueror, etc.

*Sniff* It makes a dad proud, I tell ya!

That was a nice story. I cant wait until my son get's old enough so we can go into disscusions about comics and relflect upon each character in my bowen collection. I have debating whether to pick up these books, anywhere I can get these at a good price.

My oldest daughter is 3 so she can't go anywhere near my comics, but she does see my statue collection. She likes me to name all of the characters and has favorites from each shelf (there are 5: X-Men, Avengers, Marvel Heroes, Marvel Villains, and DC). So far her favorites are Iceman, Captain America, Spider-Man, Green Goblin, and Robin.

She gets very excited when Daddy gets a new "superhero" in the mail.

Wow, what a cool story! Thanks for sharing.
I remember my father would take me to the ONLY comic book store around at the time, mid 1970's, (they sold old comics, magic tricks & Star Trek stuff) whenever I did well on a test or got a good report card. He had no interest in them, but supported my collecting habit as long as my grades were good.
Lots of good memories...
That reminds me of this one time, late 70's/early 80's several stores popped up selling comics.
We walk into the store, I go through the bins as my old man goes looking around & making small talk with the owner. He calls me over & goes "Hey Bart. What about that one?" pointing to Superman 4 on the wall behind the counter. I'm all excited & go "Yeah!". The owner says " Oh, that's my baby" & gently removes from the wall & lays it on the counter. He gently removes the book from the bag for us to view. My father asks me "You want it?" & asks the guy how much. The owner was all excited & says three-fifty. My father reaches into his pocket & pulls out a nice $5.00 bill & puts on the counter.
I think I heard the shop owner gasp as the look of excitement from the sale ran from his face! He says "No, no, no...$350.00!". Now my father gasped & says "C'mon Bart, lets go!"
Good memories....

I'm sure your son, years from now, will look back on those walks you have with him, talking about comics.

I got 2 girls 3 and 1 both turn older in April...
My oldest loves the Teen Titans cartoon, and that weird theme song in english and japanese. And knows who daddy likes the best but she plays games with my head, like all women do at one time or another...
We watch X-men the movie or X2 and I ask her whos that on the tv and she says Spiderman, knowing damm well how it really is...
And my youngest, we still call baby Hulk, cause if she doesn't get her way, lookout!!!!
I gave her a teen titnas go comic and she ripped it within 3 mins, so she does not get the play near daddy comics and the toy/collectable room is off limits and the door is always locked. But they both enjoy playing with my old secret wars action figs from the 80's and some other figs from the 90's...
Gotta love'em

My 7 yr old son loved my Iron Fist bust while I had it, something about the dragon tattoo on the chest......
He calls my Zorro bust, the Dread Pirate Roberts from Princess Bride. I kinda liked it, so that is now what everyone in the house calls it!! My two year old daughter just looks at them and goes, "ooooooooooooooooooo!!!"

My 2 1/2 year old can name most of the busts in my cabinet. What cracks me up is that he calls "doop" The Rabbit! When you look at him closely his eyes do look like a rabbit's. :)

At my shop we have Clark Kent pulling open his shirt with a close up of the chest on the windows out front. My kid calls it the "Superman Store"

Gotta love the next generation!! :thumbs2:

Bart et al,

Great stuff. Thanks for sharing your experiences with your kids. It's just great to bond with kids over this stuff because it's more than just something to talk about. It's a passion for you and you can see it becoming a passion (or at least an interest) in them.

A couple of nights ago my same son brought my most recent copy of MK Spider-Man into our bedroom while my wife and I were reading in bed. He opened it to the last page, with the Green Goblin dangling MJ off the Brooklyn Bridge and saying "Look familiar, Parker?" and asked me if I had the Death of Gwen Stacy issues for him to read. I loaned him the tpb but also the Death of Captain Stacy tpb and suggested he read that one first. Well, last night he returns it to me almost teary-eyed and asked me, "How did Captain Stacy know he was Peter? Why did he wait to tell him before he died?" We got into a long discussion after which he ran back to his room to start the Gwen book. My wife, before he left, said to both of us, "I just love listening to the two of you talk together." It was quite a family moment, I tell you. Do you think Lee, Kirby, Romita, Kane, etc., ever truly realize(d) the impact they have on us all?
