Here's a couple pieces I did late last year. I normally have to work very polished, so I wanted to render some pieces that were intentionally rough. After finishing the pieces I found that the texture in itself can be an interesting element to the overall sculpture. I like the life that remains in the figures here, that I think can sometimes be finessed out through too much noodling.
These are painted, not actual bronze. The scale is big, about 1/3.
Thanks for looking.:)

I am always impressed by sculptors who can leave a sculpt 'rough' but still have it look finished. Just beautiful. Great work, William!

The hard thing about doing this kind of work is having the self-control to stop when the work is truly done. After fifteen plus years of essentially creating nothing but clean, "finished" sculptures, the only way I could force myself to stop was to literally set a timer on how long I would work. When the time was up the pieces were complete. I wanted to portray the power of the heroes, and the details(including things like symmetry) were secondary.
Great fun that re-sparked my creative juices and reminded why I love sculpture so dearly.
Thanks to everyone for the kind words.:)

I love the character of the rough flesh out on both of these busts, really works well for that bronze look/finish.

Wow, the sculptural equivalent of a gesture drawing! After so having to give everything a "professional" polish for so long, you must have had to grab your hand by the wrist to get it to stop! They just radiate strength, nice!:thumbs2:

Those are too damn cool! There's something really magical about the economy of strokes necessary to make rough work read correctly. It's definitely an artform in it's own right and you're a master of that as well. Great work as always William!

Wow. Is that not the greatest looking Dark Knight bust ever?!! Mind
you, Cap looks amazing too.
Y'know, I was just talking with another sculptor about how tired I
am of seeing so many polished, ultra-clean, ultra-detailed sculpts
coming out nowadays, and no rough, rake-marked, fingerprinted,
beautiful, sketch-like pieces, EXACTLY like this!!!
Amazing job William, as always. :)

Thats what I was gonna say. Definitley captures the gritty element. Bats certainly has it. I'd love to see Cap get medieval on someones ass as well.

That's it exactly. Once the piece has the essence you want, it's done. Thanks.:)

The Batman piece was produced as Christmas gifts last year, and I actually sent all the recipients an email ahead of time, explaining what I was going for so they didn't think I was sending them some piece of crap I just didn't feel like finishing. Many years of nothing but polished work has a strange psychological affect, and even though I knew I was done I still felt like I wasn't.

Bronze casting is very different than resin and yes quite expensive. It's an interesting process and quite brutal as well.
